Michael ------------------------------ Date: Thu, 30 Mar 2000 13:35:28 -0800 From: Louis Lynch Subject: Madison Square Gardens YES Hi all, Funny thing. I fell off the list for the entire month of March. With 47 musical shows and a full-time job, I don't have any space this month for anything. I hate to admit I haven't even been reading the digest list regularly. But, driving to work this morning, I had a crazy notion that I was missing something! Sure enough, Joni tickets go on sale for Madison Square Garden Monday. Thanks guys, for being there as reliable as ever. Because I know being THERE is going to be a top priority. I send my apologies along about New Orleans Jonifest, too. Michael, the harpist can't make it after all. I found out my job as a singing cowboy at the rodeo is covered by the contract I signed a few years ago -- this is the last year of the contract, not a renewal year. Also, I broke my record. On St. Patrick's Day, come the fifth and final gig, this Irish harpist had a minor incident involving twelve or thirteen beers and ended up smoking a few cigarettes! Blame it on the Guinness, me lads! I miss reading e-mails from all of you. I'll catch up on my life and jump back into the list within a few weeks' time. Regards, Harper Lou PS After a four week absence from the list, though, it seems that the same old age-old debate about gay sensitivity is still going on and on, this time about Kevin Spacey of all people. Really, does it matter? You know, I have never once questioned nor cared whether anyone else prefers boys or girls, oral or whatever, missionary or trapezes. Why should someone's sex life be fodder for public conversation? If people want to advertise their sexual choice, that's their decision and they must be willing to face the fact that their facts may turn some people off. If people don't want to kiss and tell, please allow them to keep their privates private without prying! For the record, I liked Ellen DeGeneres better before she became the poster child for everything lesbian. And I prefer NOT knowing whether Ricky Martin is or is not -- he's more intriguing that way. Years ago, I dated a woman who used the line, "I never discuss my sexuality with anyone except the person I'm sleeping with." I thought that was a pretty classy philosophy. I wish the media would follow the same guidelines in their coverage. ------------------------------ Date: Thu, 30 Mar 2000 16:40:59 EST From: FMYFL@aol.com Subject: Re: Joni on Letterman Michael asks: << Does anyone know if Joni is still suppose to do Letterman next Monday??? The discussion was not about people being nosy about others sex lives, but about the discrimination shown twoard gay people and the need for gay not to compaound this by hiding. Quite why you prefer someone before you knew she was a lesbian is myseterious. Of course, as str8 man, you can't be expected to understnd what the point was, i guess. If what has been said about Spacey is true, and he is denying it, then it is worhty of discussion becasue what he is said to be doing affects gay people negatively. And in the long run it affects everyone negatively. Your calssy woman friend: it is easy to say that when you are str8-people don't ask and just assume anyhow. The issue is a political one and about human rights not prurient interest in others sex lives. i am surprised, tho god knows why, that that needs to be pointed out. I know of at least two stories of people having sex (one an affair) with him while he was filming here in Chicago. He was seen regularly dining with men and being "out". I know people in LA who have regularly seen him hanging out with young men and acting "out". So, why the pretense when the camera is on? Why the insistence?" First, let me say that I've always greatly enjoyed Howard's contributions to the list, and so hate to express reservations about anything at all that he's posted. We're also originally from the same home town, which merits him a special affection on my part! But I must admit that the above made me quite uneasy, in addition to some of the posts which followed, and just assumed that Spacey is, indeed, gay. Do any of us really know that? And at what point do unsubstantiated rumors become "not our business"? Perhaps the "stories" were told to Howard first-hand, by individuals he knows well and trusts implicitly. If so, and if Spacey has continued to deny the truth while claiming to be straight, I can certainly see why Howard would feel frustrated and angry. And since Spacey is a public figure who will influence others by the very fact of his fame, I can even buy the argument that the denial, under those circumstances, is worthy of public debate. However, beyond that, what circumstantial evidence grants us absolute certainty here? Can't the man dine regularly with male friends without being issued the proverbial "gay card"? What, exactly, is "acting 'out'"--might this not constitute just another stereotype of the kind that has been so hurtful to those in the GLBT community in the past? And, if he has simply denied being "gay" without going into any more detail, is it not possible that he is (gasp) bisexual, or simply refuses to label his sexuality, rather than "straight," as seems to have been assumed all around? Must such a powerful force as sexual desire be defined in either/or, black or white; a glass half full or half empty? Finally, just how much clarification does Kevin Spacey owe us? How much of a sliver of his private life does he get to keep just that--private? In my line of work, unfortunately, I get to see a lot of people putting 2 and 2 together and coming up with 5, with absolutely the best of intentions and the full conviction that they're right, either on the witness stand or in simple conversation. I just hope we're not doing more of exactly the same thing here. Hi Mary-of course it is not correct to assume anything about the man. However, the discussion, as far as I saw it anyway, was about whether,IF IT IS TRUE, he is harming himself and others by denying it. That was my stance anyway. Personally, I think people in the public eye who are gay would do themselves and everyone else a big favour if they did not hide it. Hiding only compounds the homphobia. I have no idea if Mr Spacey is gay or not(it never occurred to me he might be) nor do I know if Ms Foster is or Clint Eastwood or Meryl Streep or the Dalai Lama or anyone else who is well known. On one level, i couldn't care less. On another I care very much if they are and are lying about it because that hurts the likes of you and I, meaning everyone, all human beings-not just gay people.(btw no I haven't heard any rumours about the Dalai nor about Meryl nor Clint-they just came up in my mind.) Rock Hudson hid it and damaged himself and others as a result. It is important though to bear in mind that no homosexual person, or bisexual, would be in this posoiton if the homophobia didn't exist. You and I might not care two hoots about a persons sexual orientation be both ways, sideways, uways or downways BUT the majority of people DO care enough to make the lives of us who do differ difficult. bw colin ------------------------------ Date: Fri, 31 Mar 2000 03:20:44 +0100 From: "catman" Subject: Re: Hello Again my friends (vljc) > Roy stayed in the kitchen for a while chatting to an old women(his words) > who chain smoked it typical! I won't comment on Spacey specifically, but really why should a homosexual man be encouraged to identify himself as "gay" if he doesn't wish to? While I respect the bravery and integrity of the pioneers who risked their lives working toward a more enlightened society, right now in the US the "gay community" leaves much to be desired. Is it really necessary for people to label their sexuality at all? And if it is, then might not the "gay community" need to re-define itself? What is it to say that you are "gay" in the year 2000? That you like Gucci, Absolut, electrolysis and GHB? That you want to have a baby with Madonna? I am well aware that the community has been decimated by a protracted health crisis. But at this point IMO concepts of "gayness" are being defined by corporate America and greedy hucksters within the "community," reducing "gay" culture to its lowest common denominator. Perhaps we do still need to label ourselves in order to promote understanding and insure the liberation of future generations. But no one should have a label forced upon him/her. As long as Kevin Spacey or anyone else is living his life with grace and dignity, IMO he has the right to define himself in any way he chooses.
