I met Wally [Breese]. He's a lovely man. I love what he's done there, and the people who have congregated around it are really an interesting group of people. They sent me a cookbook for my birthday; all these Web people, the regulars. They've met and gathered there, and formed a kind of a circle of friends. They're very bright, and oddly, humorous people. For the cookbook each person contributed a favorite recipe, and they gave it some name that referred to one of my songs. I haven't had a chance to cook anything from it, but I've read some of it, and it is quite delicious-sounding. At the back of book there were individual bios that referred to philosophical and other musical interests, so you get a kind of portrait of the fans that you wouldn't otherwise. I was impressed with their humor and their individuality. They're really some special people. Thanks for posting this interview Jim! I received my copy of the first 2 discs and wanted to say that you have done a smashing job. I have to agree that the Streisand rendition of "I Don't Know Where I Stand" is really very beautiful. On a funny note, when I saw that you had a cover by Nancy Wilson, I couldn't imagine what this was going to sound like. I adore Fagen and his voice, but I would disagree here - To me his wonderful voice seemed definitely weaker on Kamakiriad than on Nightfly. On a track like 'On the Dunes', he really sounds to be having some trouble stretching for the high notes, although admittedly, that does add to the poignancy of that particular song. Haven't heard Two Against yet, but I can imagine his voice is hardly gonna be stronger now than it was on Kamakiriad. Still, I agree, that doesn't necessarily mean he had to use electronic help for his voice. Can't imagine Tom Waits ever doing such a thing. Although with Waits the gravel is the trademark sound, but with Fagen the smoothness is the trademark, so can't blame him really. Hi everyone, Flipping through the pages of the Showtime section of this morning's Ft Lauderdale paper, these were the first words I read: "You have to award points for musical taste to any film that opens to the melancholy strains of Joni Mitchell's A CASE OF YOU. My eyes now open wide as I continued reading. "Not only is that ballad one of the great bittersweet love songs of all time, it also perfectly sets the tone for director Keith Gordon's heartfelt interpretation of Scott Spencer's novel WAKING THE DEAD. The movie does an impressive job of capturing a crucial moment in time--the United States in the early '70's, torn between '60's idealism and a pragmatic view of working withing "The System". I hadn't read anything about this film before but was very excited about it now. I'll summarize the review and copy what the reviewer (Todd Anthony) says at the end. The film stars Billy Codrup (?), Jennifer Connelly, Hal Holbrook and Molly Parker. Two children of the '70's share a bittersweet love. "It is less convincing as a quasi-mystery about a man so torn apart by grief at the untimely death of his girlfriend that he thinks he sees her everywhere. He becomes obsessed. We open in 1974 as Fielding Pierce learns via a news report of the death of his girlfriend Sarah, in a car bombing, orchestrated by right-wing Chilean terrorists. After establishing Fielding's anguish we flash back to 1972 and watch the unlikely couple meet. He's a Coast Guard officer with political ambitions and she's a left-leaning free thinker. Crodup and Connelly make an appealing and believable couple, and the film's tragic love story angle does get under the skin. You feel Fielding's anguish and hope he isn't hallucinating when he starts seeing Sarah's face and hearing her voice. But talk about a narrow target audience. True, the love story holds universal allure and the lead characters come across as complex and well drawn. But the films socio-political underpinnings will make it a tough sell to younger audiences who have grown accustomed to believing the '70's were only about elephant bell-bottoms, promiscuous sex and disco. Those of us who grew up on Joni Mitchell, however, could drink a case of it and still be on our feet. He gave the film 2 1/2 stars but still seemed to like it alot. :-) The Miami Herald gave it 3 stars but no mention at all of Joni's song. :( The film seems to be in a limited release and locally is only playing at 2 art theaters." Can't wait to see it! (And maybe contact the reveiwer and fellow Jonifan and have a little chat.) There was no mention of which version of the song she sings, but I assume it is the original one. Love to all, Pearl Looking forward to seeing Joni in Florida !!! On a personal note, I'm very excited that Marcy is getting married. My daughter Marcy (named after the song Marcie) got engaged in January and the wedding date is June 24, 2000. Needless to say I've been busy. Some of you may remember the time I met Joni and told her I named my daughter Marcy.
