Damn, you should work for Hallmark :) I know it's stupid to be feeling so old and blah about the birthday, but I guess I always need something to groan about! I don't know, I guess it's just freaking me out at how fast time now goes by, when before it used to drag on endlessly. But in any event, I am sure my 30's will be better than the other decades... half of the 20's really sucked, so I can't really rave about all of those years anyway. And, I still look like I'm 18, so I should really shut up! But, the one weird thing is that I swear I am finally starting to understand the term "feeling your age." I swear, every time I sit in front of the t.v., I end up nodding off like my father, and, a few weeks ago, on an energetic impulse to start jogging after sitting on my lazy ass for the past year, I was in so much pain I could have fallen down... I was at this indoor track thing, and these old ladies were passing me, while I was limping along, thinking "Oh my God, I never knew I had muscles there before." Oh, and I was getting OH SO ANNOYED at the neighbor kid for playing this crappy dance music over and over again while he was outside working on his car. I know that any day now, out of my mouth will come "And those kids with their baggy pants and their ugly hair and their rock and roll music"..... OY! And then, I am already beginning to do the Grandpa Simpson stories, that go nowhere and don't end... like this post. Soon, I will be posting "Back in my day, we wore onions on our belts, as was the fashion at that time. Not white, but yellow onions were the best. We wore them on Thanksgiving, which we then called Turkey Day, except the turkey wasn't called a turkey, it was called walking bird...I loved to eat walking bird stuffed with cranberries and gunpowder...." (if you don't watch the Simpsons as compulsively as me, then this little joke will not make sense to you!) I am a single > mother, I hate that cost has > to be such a mitigating factor in deciding what, > culturally, I can show my > son first-hand. It's the same here in Toronto. Someone gave me tickets to a Raptors (basketball) game last year, up in the nosebleed section - these may have cost $15-20 each if I had had to pay for them. I took my son, who was 8 at the time. Even though I got the tickets free, the kid wants a souvenir, so I bought him a pair of cheapo binoculars (purple with the Raptors logo on them) - they were broken the next day and cost me about $10 (and that was one of the cheapest things they had.) Matthew has a pretty short attention span and has difficulty dealing with lots of noise, so he wanted to leave after about half-an-hour. Nowadays, when the kids want to see a sports event, I take them to one of the baseball games played in the local parks (anything from 6-yr-olds to adults). It's free and you can leave whenever you feel like it without feeling ripped off, and the kid gets the sense of the game with, in my opinion, much more of a sportspersonlike attitude, particularly amongst the younger kids, where some of the coaches actually DO emphasize playing a good game as opposed to winning at all costs. (We're not talking about hockey where being an "enforcer" and bashing people over the head with your stick seems more important than how you skate or handle a stick these days - parents of 8-yr-olds have been heard yelling at their kid to "kill" some other kid, and that (and the cost!) are why my kids aren't in organised sports. ===== Catherine (in Toronto) catrin_of_aragon@yahoo.ca (the former cateri@hotmail) _______________________________________________________ Do You Yahoo!? He said the concert has been confirmed (finally) and tickets will go on sale Monday 3-27 at 10:00 a.m. Unusual that it's not a Saturday, but that's what he said too. That's good news since ticketmasters won't be as busy on a Monday morning. For anyone in the Palm Beach area, that's good news too since their box office is only open on the week days. However he did say that it wasn't worth my drive across the state since their box office goes through ticketmasters too. The best way to get tickets is like someone previously mentioned - thru American Express Gold Card. Since he was in charge of the VIP boxes (which really do go seasonally for $12190), he didn't have the info on the rest of the seats. According to him AMEX Gold card sells the first 10 rows in sect. 5,6 & 7 which he thought were better seats than sections 1,2 &3 (unless you're lucky enough to get in the first few rows). The ticket info should be on their website tomorrow, possibly tonight. I'll let yall know if I find out any further info Yippee, Joni in the sunshine state!!!! However, you should be aware that this is a special "Mini-Series" sale where in order to purchase tickets, you must buy seats for at least two (2) shows in the series. Individual shows will go on sale through TicketMaster later on. I'd suggest checking out our website at http://www.atlantaconcerts.com towards the end of the month to see if the schedule's been released, and when it is take a look to see if there are any other shows that look worthwhile rather than waiting to see what's left by the time the shows go on sale individually. Not that impossible! Below are the favourite songs from each album, as decided by a poll run by Bob (SCJoniGuy) last year. For some reason I kept all the results - I must have known they'd come in handy! STAS - Cactus Tree Clouds - That Song About The Midway LOTC - Rainy Night House Blue - A Case Of You FTR - Woman Of Heart And Mind MOA - Love Or Money HOSL - Sweet Bird Hejira - Amelia DJRD - Don Juan's Reckless Daughter Mingus - tie between The Wolf That Lives in Lindsay and The Dry Cleaner From Des Moines WTRF - Chinese Cafe DED - Ethiopia C&S - The Same Situation CMIARS - Secret Place S&L - tie between Amelia and Hejira NRH - Two Grey Rooms TI - 3-way tie between The Sire of Sorrow, Turbulent Indigo and Magdalene Laundries TTT - tie between Love Puts On A New Face and Harlen in Havana The votes (obviously) aren't in for Both Sides Now, but I'll put in my vote for Comes Love! I don't know how you'd pick 8 songs for this - it seems an impossible task. Good luck, and I hope this helps! Personally (from the above list, in no particular order) I'd go for: Cactus Tree Two Grey Rooms Chinese Cafe Magdalene Laundries Woman of Heart and Mind Don Juan's Reckless Daughter Hejira The Sire of Sorrow Hell _______________________________ "I don't believe in livin' in the middle with available extremes" - Carole King hell@ihug.co.nz ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 21 Mar 2000 17:43:48 -0800 (PST) From: zapuppy2@webtv.net (Penny) Subject: Re: Joni on speakeasy Ha! I loved Marcel's post, and I also agree about small venues. There's a tiny bar I go to every Thursday night for some of the greatest jazz I've ever heard - no cover charge, and we've got to know the band really well. I also recently saw my favourite NZ singer-songwriter - Shona Laing - in a small bar for only NZD$20, which is about USD$9! You just have to keep your eyes and ears (and minds) open! And I must say I really hate going to large "stadium" type concerts now. I went to a few when I was younger, which incidentally have never been cheap here, I think simply from the cost involved in bringing equipment, people, etc. halfway round the world. But the last one I went to was Alanis Morrissette (about 2 years ago), and I was really disappointed. Couldn't get near the stage so couldn't see, no seats, so kept getting pushed and shoved - not my idea of a fun night out. For Shona Laing on the other hand, I was sitting in a small bar with about 100 other people, sitting quietly, enjoying the music, and I was only 5 feet from the stage! Actually, I think I'm just getting old. Hey Evian, have you got a spare rocking chair over there? Your slightly older twin sister is getting crotchety with all these young'uns and their loud, meaningless rock-n-roll music! Unfortunately I was not able to afford the $85 price tag for tickets to the Joni, Bob, and Van show here in Vancouver and that is in stark contrast to the first time I saw her: FREE for students of the Univ. of Western Ontario in 1968. (Non-students paid fifty cents!!) I still have a magazine photo taken from behind Joni which shows me sitting in the second row. (I put it through PhotoShop and used it as the CD cover for one of Bob's wonderful CD treasures.) Penny, MuchMoreMusic is a lighter version of Canada's MuchMusic which is our version of MTV. Not that it's easy listening but they don't play heavy metal or rap generally. It broadcasts out of Toronto but is carried by cable across the country and I think to several American markets. Anyway for those who have access the broadcast times are: Wed Mar 22 6pm and 9pm PST (9pm and midnight EST) Thurs Mar 23 11am PST (2pm EST) I don't know anything about the programme but I plan to watch and tape it so perhaps it could be video-treed at some point. For God's sake, can we please organise a petition to Joni's management from the JMDL, requesting that she please play just one date in Saskatoon? I'd organise a flight - sell the car, the cat, the cutlery - just to see this! Evian, never, never, NEVER "swear" to anything on this list. You know you're just tempting fate! I sent the post to some Cat people and here is some advice...delete if not interested! Catgirl Please tell your friend to NOT place Chloe!!!!! Wemmy did the same thing & I have the BEST cure for this (as long as it's not a UTI). Thirty minutes of individual playtime three times a day. I don't care how busy anyone is, if they want the kitty to be happy & stop peeing on the floor, #1) take them to a vet to make sure it's not something more serious, #2) 30 mins. of playtime 3X's a day. While she has been good for two months, the trauma of the move is getting to her. THe furniture and everything is probably all in different places than she is used to having them, a new home, all of this is a little too much for her. Hopefully by putting her in her own room with food and kitty litter will help. By getting used to the new place, little by little, I think she will gradually adjust and stop peeing in the wrong places. As long as she knows she is still loved and this is not punishment, she should be just fine. Also make sure she has her favorite toys available in the room. Hope this will work for your friend. To me, this is absolutely no reason to have Chloe pts. or find a new home. There is a solution to the problem and maybe the vet can help you. It might possibly be a health problem, too. Good luck. If she really needs to find another home, please let me know and I will put you in touch with someone who might be able to help. She does rescue work and has a good record with finding homes for purr bugs. THINK POSITITVE!!!! IT will get better. Head butts and purrs from my purr bugs to you and yours. Again, for a purr bug that has been through so much with your friend, DON'T GIVE UP ON HER!!!!! She needs her purrson and understanding even more than ever. She doesn't need to be put in a shelter, another home, or pts. The first two alternatives would be pretty traumatic because of her age and how long she has been with your friend. The last is unthinkable because there is a way to deal with the problem. Catgirl Hi all ... sorry for the bounce-thru ... I just emailed Colin, our resident cat expert, with the hope that he will have a suggestion as to how to stop my 9-year-old mixed breed cat, Chloe, from peeing on the bathroom rug. My lover is quite displeased and is certain Chloe's next target will be the oriental rug in the living room. We're a four-cat household and Chloe has behaved very well for the past two months since we moved here, but at the moment things are not looking good for Chloe's continued habitation in our home. Chloe and I have been partners for nine years and she has traveled with me everywhere, providing stability and companionship all the while. I am broken-hearted, to say the least. I'm not sure if Chloe would have this bad habit if she were an "only" cat. She hasn't enjoyed that particular luxury since she was 7 months old, and she's had periodic various episodes of this unfortunate (and gross) behavior since 1995. Does anyone have a remedy? At best, I think I'm faced with placing Chloe in an adoption center (poor chances for a new home for her, I fear). At worst ... well, I think we all know what "worst" is. My only consolation when considering that idea is that she would be joining my brother Billy, who (okay, smirk if you will) has already indicated that would be okay. Up for adoption: Chloe (Chlorine, Chloe-ette, Clueless) the family cat, who unfortunately pees sometimes where she shouldn't and doesn't like the sound of Joni's singing (nope, not even "Man from Mars"). Any takers? You captured it very well and so complimentary. Bless you, I've never heard someone from the Northern Cal/Bay Area speak so well of us! (To the rest of the world - Northern California's contempt for the Southern half is legendary and a long-standing institution here. Maybe there is a new sense of rapproachment starting? ;-D We were so lucky in the old days to see anyone anywhere for under $8 and have a halfway decent seat to boot. It's hard to believe that back then one could actually get in the first few rows if they got their tickets early. Not like today where the first 50 rows or so are automatically set aside at the beginning for the industry folk. And, unfortunately, with the advent of Ticketmaster and the other sharky monopolizers of the concert biz, being held up for the $$$ is the norm today. Generalizing, I think they also are targeting us former hippie-turned-yuppie, middle-aged, now-prosperous demographic who they know can and will shell it out to see their favorites from long ago. Sigh. But I need to again put the Joni prices in a little perspective. Here are the ticket prices at the Greek - $33.50, $48.50, $68.50 and $88.50. That $128.50 ticket price is, I am sure, for the front row freaking Jack Nicholson-Rosanna Arquette-k.d. lang-Geffen (eeeuu), whatever seats. The range of prices should not be too far out of everyone's price range. I'm going for the $88 but mainly because I have a long memory of my penniless youth where I was practically in the back row for the Miles of Aisles concert in '74!
