On Wed., on MuchMoreMusic, there is some interview with Joni or something, on something called "SpeakEasy". I just turned MMM on tonight for quiet background while working on this frigging presentation, and my wife, who was sleeping on the couch, woke up and said "JONI... SEE THAT.. JONI" and rolled over. Anyway, it appears they talk to her on this speakeasy show... I have no idea how long it is or anything. I'll check out the MMM website when I get home tomorrow. Anyway, off to bed... and btw, anyone I owe email to, lol, I'll get to it, it's been one of those months! We, too, have a cat with a peeing problem. After multiple trips to the vet, we were given a prescription for Valium. It helped a little, but mostly just made him so groggy he couldn't get up to pee. After despairing further, and doing every possible thing that we heard about (we have five cat boxes in different parts of the house, etc.), I found a web site that addressed this problem pretty well (sorry, I don't recall the address), and at the very end it talked about Prozac, when all else failed. Well, we tried it. And it worked pretty well. Jackson still has his moments, but by and large the Prozac did the trick. We used 10 mg initially, but now he is up to 20 mg. If he misses three days in a row, he starts peeing again. And he is not weird or groggy or anything. Good luck! Child! NJC evian piteously wrote: > I share mine with Elton John and Aretha this Saturday, and since I am > turning 30, I feel so old melancholy about it, I could puke.... Lather was 30 years old today, they took away all of his toys, his mother sent newspaper clippings to him 'bout his old friends who stopped being boys... I turned 30 in the predawn mist of time (ok, 17 years ago) and it was at confirmation camp; yes, with large groups of 7th and 8th graders, engaged in the teaching of catechetical material, I turned a very lonely 30. So I brought our parish's phonograph (this story involves many ancient artifacts, including me) and a Jefferson Airplane album (when vinyl ruled) on the appointed day, and played "Lather" over and over and over but Lather still finds it a nice thing to do to lie about nude in the sand, making mountains that look like bumps, and thrashing the air with his hands... My confirmands took pity on me and told me that I was still worthwhile. But wait, old Lather's productive you know, he produces the finest of sounds, with drumsticks on either side of nose, snorting the best licks in town. And they sang the Lather song with me and then hoisted my cut-offs (with me not in them) up the flag pole as a birthday salute. I should have told him, no, you're not old, and I should have let him go on, smiling, baby boy. Now all these years later, 30 - was I ever that young? But consider: it is worse to be turning 36, the year in which you become closer to 50 than 20... consider it is worse to be in your 40s (as I am, still vainly trying to claim 'middle 40s') where eyesight diminishes (I need contacts and glasses to read) and no one looks at you as anything more than a graying figure of many earth revolutions... or: the best is yet to come! Tonight I did yet another in a series of kick-ass step aerobics/kick boxing classes, doing things that I couldn't do, at 40, or 30, or 20, and in my callow youth I never had all of Joni's albums (which I do now, although at 20 I had 2 out of 3!)... and I can, and this is most important, Evian, gather together with friends that I have known for 30+ years, with people who I have known and have known me through so many of the days of our lives, and we no longer try to impress each other, or have to explain everything to each other, because we know, we've been there for each other, we know all about each other, the dumb things we've done, the grandiose visions, the different affectations and things we did to be cool and now embarrass us, we know all of each other's spouses and former spouses and loves of our lives, and our failures, weaknesses, mistakes, strengths, and essential goodness, and how contentment arises in being with people with whom one shares so much of life. Time, is on my side, yes it is... Age is a bastard thing, aging is worse, but the gift of time with friends is the most wonderful blessing of all and I measure a large part of the quality of my life by the friends that I have that go way, ay back with me. And it takes time to get that, and it is good. When I go a baseball game with my buds this year, we'll have about 148 years of human life there which makes us sound old, but about 108 of those years have been spent in being friends with each other. You can't get that on the cheap... old friends... So the birthday, dear Evian, is a progression to the point where you can have your friends for more years, and all that is good in the relationships that span the lives of the parties. And who was it that said, "life is for learning"? This trip down memory lane with accompanying boring sermon is the down side of age for me, I have to tell these pointless stories, so forget all I said (like everyone does) and just have a happy birthday, big guy! It's been quite a while since I last posted a message. I was saddened by the news of Wally's passing. I was out of the country at the time. I offer my sincerest condolences and prayers to all. I received my copy of Both Sides Now yesterday and what can I say? It is marvelous! I was reading the liner notes and lyrics on the train home last night and especially liked the inclusion of an introduction by Larry Klein. The idea of "tracing the arc of the modern romance" itself may not be innovative; Lord knows we've all experienced the excitement of love, the elation, the struggle, the disappointments, the expectations, the indescribable grasp love has on our hearts at times, and in my life, music has played the most integral part in expressing these emotions even when I couldn't. So, while the idea of choosing songs to trace this arc may not be an innovative one, Joni has chosen songs that tap into the primeval feelings that are the essence of these classics. I remember hearing Joni say in an interview that she was not particularly impressed with songwriters today, that the self-loathing attitude present in so many songs is boring. There was more to it but I can't remember right now. I remember this now because when listening to these songs I hear pure lamentation and celebration. It seems that the simplicity here is almost staggering! The songs cut RIGHT to the chase and the nature of all love relationships is represented here with lyrics that cry out and melodies that soar. I cannot take it out of the CD player...and I won't for some time. Once again, music is my therapy and Joni my therapist. Wynonna's sister, actress Ashley Judd, will host the show. Mitchell's jazz-pop standards collection, Both Sides Now, is due Tuesday (March 21). Joni Mitchell, the '60s folk queen and an innovator in jazz and pop-rock, will perform with local symphony orchestras on an 11-city tour in support of her new album, Both Sides Now. The trek will open at Los Angeles' Greek Theatre on May 12, feature two dates at the Theater at Madison Square Garden in New York and end on June 2 at Philadelphia's E-Center, according to Alyse Kingsley, Mitchell's publicist. More dates may be added. Both Sides Now, which includes jazz-pop standards, is Mitchell's first LP that doesn't comprise primarily her own compositions. It also features re-recordings of two Mitchell classics, the title track (RealAudio excerpt) and "A Case of You." The LP was first released in a limited Valentine's Day edition box set that included reproductions of the singer's recent paintings. The regular edition of the album will be released Tuesday. Kingsley said a Mitchell tribute LP featuring Elvis Costello, Björk and others, is tentatively scheduled for release in late summer and added that Mitchell is planning a Christmas album featuring some of her own compositions. It then went on to list the confirmed dates we've all seen. What caught my eyes was the part about the possiblity of more dates being added. Oh, I hope so!! There are plans to tour the exhibition nationally and perhaps internationally, due to intense interest from the visual arts community. Recently I was literally given two "luxury box" seats to the Staples Arena in Los Angeles for a LA Lakers Basketball game. Not wanting to miss an opportunity to see "how the other half lives" and loving pro basketball (though having a visceral animosity towards all LA teams- [Giants fans and 49er fans have this genetic code in their DNA]) I decided to take my oldest son to LA just for the game and have a special day with him. While I "hate" the teams down there I LOVE LA (the city & area) and the downtown. BTW there are many incredible pure art deco buildings in downtown LA that are some of the best examples out of New York. Dont drive around downtown WALK around downtown if you want a visual spectacle. Another benefit of walking around in LA is you see all these places where you saw mass murder committed in movies like Terminator 2 and Heat. "Oh wow look over there, thats where the ten guys in Demolition Man were all blown away." or "Isnt that the building that was hit by the terrorists in Die Hard "??? I must also (for you music sluts) put in a good word for LA radio which could be the best in the country (pipe down New Yorkers). Face it New Yorkers you dont have 8 different stations with Mariachi Musics greatest hits AND 12 great rock stations. We went to the Staples arena after touring the IMAX theater and the African American Museum which has a really cool exhibit about the evolution of Black music in America.Check it out. Once we got into Staples I noticed that there was this incredible restaraunt (two actually) that was on a platform that hovered over the arena complete with well dressed waiters etc and legitimate haute cuisine. You could eat sauteed prawns and foi gras AND watch the game at the same time because you are IN the arena. In our box it was plush with a BIG TV, big plates of fruit, generous portions of candied cashews, sliced vegetables and rack of lamb was served with several different dips provided. This box was about 200 feet from the court so the game is going on in the distance (fortunately I brought my binoculars). The patrons of the box spent the entire game chatting in the back with their drinks and chip dips. The way I figure it each seat cost about $250 for that game including everything. Thats $500 for the two of us. This was not some special game it was simply a Laker game, one of 41 for the season. Playoff games will cost MORE. $500 for a basketball game, incredible. Now Im from the old school. Im down on the hot dog and as close to the court as I can get. I like to have the players fall over my chair as they dive for the ball. Im down with the first row in the bleachers so I can yell at the opposing left fielder and he can HEAR me and turn around and flip me off. This new economics is really an alien landscape. But get used to it because thats the way its going to keep going. $128 for one ticket to see Joni. Whew. Years ago I used to go to the Fillmore and the Avalon and Winterland sometimes four nights in a row if I really liked the band. The Who, Hendrix, Fleetwood Mac. etc. It cost $6.95. I used to go to Giants games for 90 CENTS and stand 10 feet behind Roberto, Willie and Hank Aaron. Catch a ball and take it home. Im not trying to say see how much better it was in the old days. The point here is really, how are we supposed to turn our kids onto this great stuff if it costs so much to do that. When the Giants games cost 90 cents my neighbor used to take 10 of us kids. One night he would and the next day we would go back with another parent and see Marichal pitch against Koufax. This cant truly be done any more. But THAT is why I still have the love for baseball that I have. The economics are smothering the passing of the great live experience to the next generation in its crib. Our kids will think that the WEB is the ultimate experience as opposed to the magic of the personal live experience. No set of speakers in the living room or attached to the PC regardless of how expensive will ever replace a room full of marshall stacks. You didnt hear JImi Hendrix, you FELT Jimi Hendrix. John Entwhistles Bass socked you in the stomach. Today he would be a two inch box on a flat screen. Another thing that got me about 10 years ago was the dehumanising effect of the stadium shows. Held at the gate until the first act began to play (so much for the fans of the first band on) then allowed through "pens" in pulses like cattle. This caused me to vow never to go to an outdoor show again. Its all changing for the worse IMHO. Having said all that I think of our faire Joni. The PWWAM show. The Chicago show. The art exhibit in LA of her paintings. Wallys trip to LA. It made me feel a special love for this artist who is one of the very few fighting this trend. One of the very few that at least some can get close to. The latest shows seem to be held in the somewhat smaller venues and for that there should be thanks. The ticket prices need to be higher because the production is bound to be large even in the smaller place. The cost is constant. Now if we could only get Joni to play two weeks in a small club somewhere with piano and acoustic guitar. Fortunately for me some of my favorites like Ry Cooder and Van Morrison do play such places. My concluding thoughts are that first Im glad I got to experience the best music of all time at the cost I did but I cant hold it against the artists today. Its the industry thats to blame. That and truly the people themselves. If they didnt pay $125,000 for a luxury "suite" they couldnt sell a $14.95 sandwhich or a $6.00 hot dog which is served there. Think about THAT. You used to get to see Led Zepplin from three feet away for $7.00. Now you get a hot dog for that amount.........BUT.....its a GOURMET hot dog. I am on the Joni Mitchell discussion list too, since she is my favorite female musical artist. She is about to tour (very rare for her since she has post-polio syndrome and finds being on the road too difficult these days) and will be performing in each of the cities she plays with a 70 piece orchestra consequently ticket prices are high for these shows (I will post the tentative show-dates at the bottom of this post for those who might be interested). One of the list members posted the following and I thought it was really well thought out and well written. Although there is not any real content directly relating to John Mellencamp, I thought that the issue of the cost of our entertainment was relevant to all who attend concerts in America. >>>Since the subject of high ticket prices is on the plate I thought I would throw in my take about the economics of entertainment. These days the family has been taken out of the picture when it comes to entertainment. A family of four in Detroit cannot go to a baseball game for under $200 (with tickets, parking, drinks, snacks and a program) that can mean a weeks wages to a lower-middle class family. I am a single mother, I hate that cost has to be such a mitigating factor in deciding what, culturally, I can show my son first-hand. Every once in a while my boss will give me company seats to a football or hockey game and I can sit in decent seats for only the cost of parking, drinks, maybe snacks (souvenirs are out of the question). Since Joni has changed the venue of her Detroit show from the Fox Theater to Pine Knob, odds are that the ticket prices will be significantly lower and will make it more affordable. Can anyone help? I am trying to remember which tour it was that I bought a white sleeveless T-shirt with one of Joni's original collage designs printed on the front (snips of photographs and lots of red) I know it had to have been in the 80's. If anyone knows the shirt I'm talking about please let me know which tour it was (I could scan it and send it to someone if they think they might recognize it!) Thanks.
