The Joni Mitchell song "Blue" is written about him and I've seen>explanations of Bob Dylan's "It's All Over Now Baby Blue," that say that that song is also about him. I got to know him back in the 1970s when he lived in Montreal for a while during and after a gig playing Leonard Cohen in a stage show based on Leonard's songs. They're not related and I think that the name change was show biz affectation. I don't recall exactly when (early to mid-80s) but David dropped dead while jogging in Washington Square Park in NYC. Apparently he was carrying no ID and his body was not identified for several days. During the period that I knew him, he seemed to have a real problem dealing with the fact that his star had not risen to the heights of some of his friends. BTW, on the cover of "The Basement Tapes" by Bob Dylan & The Band, David (wearing a trench coat and bowler hat) is the guy sitting on the floor next to Rick Danko. I have lots of information on David Blue I'd like to add, if possible...(and add more later) just off the top of my head: Albums: "David Blue" (1966) Very heavy Dylan influence on this one, Blonde on Blonde/Highway 61 era. "Me" (as S. David Cohen) one highlight of this record is a song called "sarah" "23 Days In September" Never heard this one...I've searched all over for it... "Nice Baby And The Angel" (1973) probably his best, most fully realized Dylanesque work. Great lyrics and Dylanisms...cool cover of David with a long scarf, looking very pensive and pouting, ala Blonde On Blonde. "Cupid's Arrow" Blue attempts to find more of his own voice, with very good results... "Coming Back For More", not as strong, vocally or musically, though the Dylan influences are way in the back. David Blue had a large role in "Renaldo & Clara" as sort of a narrator... (more later) Will. Date: Wed, 29 Jul 1998 11:08:44 -0700 (PDT) From: Will Dockery (opbop1@yahoo.com) Subject: David Blue To: karlerik@monet.no some other David Blue details: "Stories"(1971) This is the only David Blue album I've been able to locate on CD so far, a German import, and while not my favorite of his works (not as much over the top Dylan cloning, some of which has to be heard to be believed!) is still a solid, if rather slow moving, collection of songs. One song seems to be refering to one of Leonard Cohen's old girlfriends- "Marianna". "Nice Baby And The Angel"(1973)- The song "Outlaw Man" (written by Blue) appeared on this album, a much better (with heavy Dylan touches in the music and singing) than the version later covered by The Eagles. Also of some interest is a line on one of the songs on this album where Blue mentions that he's "Headin' for another joint...", quite some time before the recording of "Tangled Up In Blue", this record, in my opinion, is well worth seeking out, as a curiosity, to see just how far Blue went with his obsession with Dylan, and as a great collection of "Near-Bobs" themselves. Other stand-out cuts that come to mind (haven't listened to this record for a number of years) are "Lady O Lady", "Darlin' Jenny" and "Nice Baby And The Angel". "Cupid's Arrow" (1975) This one, as Rolling Stone pointed out, finds Blue moving closer to finding his own voice, and so doesn't have as many laughs but still is a very listenable record. David's voice, when not affecting the trademark "nasal twang" is deeper, somewhat like Tom Waits...here there's more of a mid-70's "country-rock" flavor, with much more "straightforward" lyrics("Ballad Of Jennifer Lee"). Perhaps Blue was working towards writing more songs for the Eagles to cover. "Coming Back For More" (1977) Bob Dylan plays harmonica on one or two tracks on this one, not very distinctively, though, as I recall. I think inspiration is not confined to artistic endeavours. The 'flow' can come in almost anything. My partner and I both do a lot of public speaking(John has been doing so in Philladelphia). Niether of us ever use notes From my experience, I know that sometimes when I am speaking I seem to 'leave', the talk flows, I often think to my self ' i didn't know that' as i am speaking. Other times I just speak and it seems I am a step backwards-listening to what I am saying. From John says, he experiences the same thing, tho we both speak about completely different subjects. Inspiration can come in all sorts fo ways-like feeling the need to check on someone only to find they need help. I once felt a strong urge to tell a friend she must go get a smear test. She did and they caught her cancer in time. Another time I was driving toward an intersection. My lights were green but for some reason I came to a stop anyway.Just as well as a semi trailer shot thru the intersection on red! Inspiration can also come in 'mundane' things. For instance, my new pc developed serious problem-a new drive appeared from no where and there was an ms dos warning on my desktop. I have no idea where this came from, but I looked at something called config.sys, never haveing been there before. I read what it said and just seemed to know that a line in it should not have been there. I deleted it and solved the problem! ------------------------------ Date: Sat, 18 Mar 2000 05:37:51 -0500 From: "Ken (Slarty)" Subject: From the mouth of Blue From a web site about the Rolling Thunder Tour. http://www.geocities.com/SoHo/Coffeehouse/2929/logbook42.html David Blue David Blue keeps showing up at different places on the tour. Blue gangster suit, bleary eyed, hoarse throat, wrinkled scarf, he always gives the impression he's trying to repair his health but never quite gets on top of it. He runs a stream of words at us over breakfast. "Yeah, the groupies always get heavier at it than you. They can eat you alive. They cop your style then turn it around on you. Hey, you know Dylan's wife Sara is gonna show up in Niagara. You wanna see a heavy chick? Just wait till her and Joni Mitchell get around each other. You'll get some shit on camera then, I can guarantee it. Sara's a very regal, powerful chick, and Joni's gettin' into her empress bag now. I mean Joni's a real queen now. She's really gettin' up there. You just wait until they get in fron of the camera." It turns out they never do. At least not when I was around. At one point there was talk of them doing some kind of Greek Siren scene with the men groveling at their feet, but that never panned out. Somewhere along the line they turned into hookers in front of the camera, along with Joan Baez. Every single time the place goes up in smoke like a brush fire. She stands there in the midst of it, making believe she's tuning an already well adjusted guitar until the place calms down. No doubt the element of surprise, of the audience not knowing she's on the bill, is partly responsible for the explosions, but there's something more important in it - the fact that people listen to her every word. Her music's nothing outrageous, but her word maneuverings tend to verge on uncanny. "I got a head full of quandry and a mighty, mighty, mighty thirst." What Joni song or songs could inspire a movie, or part of a movie? While Joni's songs can be quite different in conception and viewpoint from Aimee Mann's, I feel there may be some candidates. We're quick to claim coincidence or synchronicity or whatever, whereas I believe much greater forces are at work most of the time. Does God inspire a song, a painting, a sculpture, a speech, an athlete, a dramatic performance, I think the answer is a resounding yes. The trick is that you have to forget your own abilities and limitations and open yourself up to a much higher force. It's a component of faith. I'm not a songwriter, but I *know* that there have been times where I felt a presence, a guiding hand, when I am writing, or speaking, or when I was acting in community theatre...I know Joni has felt this same way, whether you label it as Divine, Muse, whatever, I think it comes from the same place. Some pressing plants seemed to do a much better job than others - usually those devoting the most time and care to the original "master" and to the quality of the "blank discs" used in the procedure (this process may well have changed since). What I do notice is that on a portable CD player my "standard" BSN (German pressed) doesn't react well to being knocked - rather than "jumping", it produces white noise and doesn't resume properly. Otherwise, it behaves impeccably. Might it also be possible that the original BSN CD wasn't pressed to "classical" standard - which I imagine would be required to cope with the dynamic range on the album? (now shoot me down, techies!!!). I know that certain music/technical afficionados who I met in the course of my work used to be very scathing about the output of some CD pressing plants - particularly those offering the shortest turnaround and lowest price. When I go back and look at what I liked back in the 70's, most of it still hold up for me today. I was lucky in that my parents were spinning Broadway/Big Band/Motown records, meanwhile my sister was playing Beatles/Jethro Tull/Led Zeppelin, so I got to listen to a pretty broad range of stuff. I guess all of us went through that to a certain extent, though... I was always dependent somewhat on the radio to pick up on new sounds, unfortunately commercial radio these days is nothing but a marketing tool, there's nothing creative going on at all. I used to also have friends who were into music and would come over with a Gil Scott-Heron record or Flora Purim or whatever and we'd sit and listen to it together. Chapman Bay Area Jmdlonians: Don't forget that tickets to Tracy Chapman at the Berkeley Community Theatre go on sale tomorrow (Sunday) at 10:00 a.m. I'm looking forward to seeing her again. And now I see that Joni has changed the Bay Area venue for her tour to the Concord Pavilion rather than Shoreline. Hmm, I'd prefer to go to Shoreline, but the Pavilion is where I saw her on her '83 tour, circa WTRF, and that was a transcendent performance. She played dulcimer, piano, and several guitars...awe inspiring, I tell you. Naturlich, I'll be there. - -Julius ------------------------------ Date: Sat, 18 Mar 2000 16:00:34 -0600 From: Scott and Jody Subject: Re: Joni at Rosemont Theatre in Chicago Laura wrote: > The Rosemont is alot more intimate compared to the United > Center. When I first read the tour dates and saw Rosemont, I immediately associated it with the Rosemont Horizon ( which is now what - the All State Arena?), a venue not much smaller than The United Center. Yay! Personally, I was hoping for Chicago Theatre but this is good!! I forgot about the Rosemont Theatre. Now we have to plan a JMDL get together. Also, anyone interested in traveling up north to Detroit the following day? It's only a 5 to 6 hour drive, traffic pending :~) I'll drive - I'm used to it. jody ------------------------------ Date: Sat, 18 Mar 2000 16:10:42 -0600 From: "Mark T. But with subsequent knowledge about the songs that we've learned over the years, there is not much to really indicate the songs are about James. Taking it song by song - All I Want and This Flight Tonight are two that seem to be about a current relationship so could be about James My Old Man - this song is about Graham Nash. Can't cite to the proof of this but have read or heard it in more than one place. Little Green = Kilauren/Kelly Carey = Carey Raditz, a red-headed friend and restaurant cook she hung out with in Matala, Crete. She discusses Carey in the Live at the Troubadour taping made by Pat Mead in 1972. California - only mention is the "red-neck on the Grecian isle who did the goat dance very well" - now thought by many to be Carey River - "I made my baby say goodbye" - Sounds like someone else - she had not said goodbye to James yet. A Case of You - "Just before our love got lost" See above. The Last Time I Saw Richard - "was Detroit in '68" - self explanatory and finally the disputed "Blue" - I defer to my elder Joni experts on this one ;-) On the other hand, the songs on For The Roses were written right after her break-up with James when she went to British Columbia to get away from it all - the music biz and also, many feel, her pain at the break-up. This has been indicated in a number of her old interviews. And most all of the songs have the themes of love that seems very recently lost because she is still holding out a little hope that it is not completely over (denial) and disillusion with the music biz. Songs commonly thought to be about James are Cold Blue Steel and Sweet Fire and See You Sometime. Also, arguably, Lesson in Survival, Electricity, Blonde in the Bleachers and some of the others. Wynonna's cover of "Help Me" on her latest CD, "New Day Dawning" (released 2/1) is FABULOUS (imho, anyway). The arrangement is eerily reminiscent of Joni's own, and Wynonna's singing is flawless. The song is most pleasing to the ear, worthy of being played on REPEAT. I am from Coventry UK (So hi to the bloke from Nottingham!!) I got into Joni because I share a birthday with her. When I was a kid I used to see who else was on Nov 7 and I always wondered who Joni Mitchell was. I borrowed some LPs from the library and was hooked! I play the guitar too and I would love to know how Joni first developed all those open tunings. They sound so great. I am perfecting my Furry Sings the Blues at the moment. I have never seen Joni live and would do just about anything to see her here in the UK.
