I'm doing a Graduate Diploma in Computing and as part of one of the subjects that I am studying I need to develop a "How to...." type instructional software package which teaches the user a skill. Sounds incredibly boring, BUT why not teach someone how to appreciate poetry, and if they're going to appreciate poetry / writing why can't that poetry / writing be music lyrics, and if you're going to use music lyrics why not use Joni's lyrics :-) What started out as a boring assignment turns into an absolutely brilliant opportunity to drive the brilliance of Joni's lyrics to a new audience in a new way. What I have decided to base this around (so far) is Joni's studio albums from 'Song for a Seagull' up until 'Don Juan's Reckless Daughter' and also use a couple of tracks from later albums such as "Slouching towards Bethlehem" and "Turbulent Indigo". What I am looking for from my fellow (incredibly gifted and talented) JMDL members is suggestions for the following: 1. Suggestions for a couple of tracks from the above mentioned albums that can be appreciated solely for their lyrical contents. (They can be read and appreciated for their writing alone). This should be the easy bit! 2. Explanations of *why* various tracks can be appreciated solely for their lyrical content. A bit harder! 3. How these tracks can be used to give people an appreciation of writing. Fairly hard too 4. The really hard bit, how can I tie any of this together as a 'teaching' package? What should people be trying to do with the material? Any feedback whether through the list or privately would really be appreciated. I think that I'm trying to jump in way over my depth with a concept such as this. Alan Lorimer Hawley Beach Tasmania ------------------------------ Date: Thu, 16 Mar 2000 17:24:52 +1100 From: "Alan Lorimer" Subject: Computer Assisted Learning So how many members are interested in a challenge? As part of the course I'm currently studying I need to create a "How to ..." instructional software product which teaches the user a skill. Although that may sound fairly boring, what if the 'skill' was to learn how to appreciate writing / poetry, and what if that writing / poetry was based on lyrics for songs? Obviously they should all be chosen from Joni's work :-) I am proposing to include the lyrics for a couple of tracks of each of Joni's albums from STAS to DJRD. The input / feedback that I would appreciate from fellow JMDL members would be: 1. Which tracks to include and (more importantly WHY). Tracks should be chosen that can stand alone just on their content. 2. If this is supposed to be a "learning package" what sort of things should people be learning from reading the lyrics to these songs? What could and should people be looking for? What prompting and other information should they be given access to? As I haven't developed this proposal to any extent, any input from fellow JMDL members would be really appreciated :-) Alan Lorimer Hawley Beach Tasmania ------------------------------ End of JMDL Digest V2000 #140 ***************************** ------- Post messages to the list at Unsubscribe by sending "unsubscribe joni-digest" to ------- Siquomb, isn't she?
