I think this statement is essentially true of much criticism (whether of well-respected icons or not, made by professional critics or not). It seems to me that liking/not liking something is a very individual, personal, subjective thing that has less to do with what's being criticized than with internal issues. Professional critics would have us believe that they are objective, but I think it's very difficult for most individuals to be truly impartial. Non-judgement is one of life's most difficult lessons. I have a press cutting from The Independent describing an invitation-only concert which Joni played in a small function room in a house in Kensington. It was to promote TI and took place on 21 November 1994 in front of an audience of about 200 people from the music business. According to the piece she played alone for an hour, the set consisting of 11 songs, 4 from TI and some that were then unrecorded (such as Face Lift). She started with Refuge from the Roads and finished with Just like this Train. She talked about Saskatoon, how she came to write The Magdalene Laundries and about Dave Crosby who was very ill at the time. The audience"became more appreciative" the longer she played. "No lighted matches and stomping feet but prolonged, insistent clapping at the end. And an encore". Here is a clip from the article which might amuse: "She is not a truly popular artist, more the centre of a fairly populous cult. Call them Jonists. Once upon a time you would have thought she was a folk singer but she wasn't quite that. There was never enough easy politics." Well fellow Jonists I hope this was of interest. But hey, better late than ever, right? i bought it not knowing what was on it or the length of the show ( saw the box in tower records here in atlanta ...walked directly to the counter ) and was more than pleased with both. here's the quick list for those who haven't seen it :Big Yellow Taxi, Just Like This Train , Night Ride Home , Crazy Cries Of Love , Harry's House , Black Crow ,Amelia , Hejira , Sex Kills , The Magdelene Laundries , Moon At The Window ,Facelift , Why Do Fools Fall In Love? , Trouble Man , Nothing Can Be Done , Song For Sharon , Woodstock , and a cool version of Dreamland over the credits ( which they cut off). around 99 mins or so....wow!!! some of my favorite things were when she sang Night Ride Home ( a song i'll always relate to my mother , far away in mexico ) , seeing joni's happy sway back and forth during Crazy Cries Of Love ( she actually did this move many times but this is the first time noticed it and a brought a big smile to my face ) . and i love hearing Black Crow no matter what ! before Ameila joni told the story of hejira ( " running away with honor" ) ... short but sweet and well spoken . heartfelt . and the song Hejira , itself , was so full of emotion ... made me shiver . WDFFIL? was fun to hear and strange to look at ( what with the 3 back up singers sitting down in the audience ) . i happen to love seeing as natural moment as what happened during Song For Sharon ( another big smile moment for me). and , of course Woodstock was inspiring as always ( nash came onstage to present her with her Rock and Roll Hall of Fame award , that marked her induction into the RHOF ).and the closing Dreamland was cool as hell , till they cut it off . i know this is pretty long winded , but please excuse my excitement . i grew up with joni in my ear and could never ( would never ) shake it out. i've only seen her once ( here in atlanta with bobby d. at georgia tech ...both were amazing by the way ) and am so happy to find out that she's coming back . if any atlanta or folk from the south are planning on going to the show please let me know. id love to meet my friends of soul . She talks about her long-time interest in origin and end-times stories, and then rather cheerfully discusses her ideas about the end of the world and her lack of optimism for the ultimate fate of humanity. She drops in many interesting facts along the way. That time has come. the Hopi's say the end of the world will come and the Hopi's say this is only one of many worlds and the last world ended in flood, which goes along with the Judian Christian concept this one ends in fire and they do say there is another. The end of this one comes when they can no longer collect their snakes for their late summer festivities to bring rain to this very difficult area that they've chosen to farm in. That happened last year um mainly because of pollution because some of the tribes sold out and developed the land in that area and polluted water went into the ground where the snakes... the traditional gathering fields for these snakes that they dance with to bring rain. Um all around the globe end stories are coming true this last little skirmish that we had in the gulf brought a lot of the images to life in Revelations which is the Christian Judaic end story. Not all of them have come true yet (wormwood)? hasn't struck... um I mean you could interrupt it as some of the fancy bombs that they were winging around but since that was dreamed by a man of the world, the known world being in that particular region, he envisioned in the distance a time when there would be a war... many that looked like woman would be on the front lines... he couldn't even say women it would just be too... but in this dream he sees woman on the front lines oh they must be men that would look like woman. There were women on the front lines. There was a beast in his vision that sounded like thousands and thousands of galloping horses and looked like a locus. The planes in profile looked exactly like that beast and sound exactly like that beast ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 15 Mar 2000 17:57:17 EST From: SMEBD@aol.com Subject: Re: Joni Web Interview Many thanks to all who responded to my request for help in connecting to the interview. I woke up this morning and was starting to drive to work when something felt weird and I stopped and got out and sure enough I had a flat tire, really flat, the one tire I hadn't bothered to replace yet. So I was giving my roommate a ride to work in her car so I could use it and I'm thinking, where do I want to go to get a new tire. I asked her about that and not a split second later, I mean right after I mentioned it, a commercial came on saying "where can you go to replace a flat tire...come to NTB blah blah blah.....blah blah blah"...so I went to NTB and saved $40.00 dollars( as opposed to SEARS which cost me $80.00...go figure). When I got to the warehouse, my friend Kathy gave me a case of wine left over from the silent auction(donated by her sister who runs a winery in Virginia-by the way the auction raised 4 grand!) of wine from Yugoslavia including a couple of bottles from 1975 which she said could either be really, really good or taste like vinegar and I must say opened it up and it is really, really, really good...we've almost finished one of the bottles...the others we are going to put away and hide and save for a special occasion. Today happens to be my roomate's birthday so a good reason for a celebration. But there is more...I got to the job for today, installing some shoe molding at a house near Emory University and the client backs into my roommates car, denting the passenger side door! Just so much to take in one day...Also, the local music editor did a write up for my show next week at Eddie's Attic and described me as an innocent puppy, singing about the cruel, cruel world. I think that is rather extreme and I find it somewhat humorous that that was his impression. Anyway, on to the show. I must say that Neil Young completely stole the show. I mean everyone had their moments...Guinnevere was so haunting and beautiful...but Neil really seemed to be the catalyst, really got things going, got those guys to rock. Everytime he sang a song I was so completely drawn in...they complemented him so well, especially on "After the Goldrush." I don't mean to take anything away from them but Neil just shone. I think he really brought the best out of everyone...though I suppose it is somewhat of a symbiotic relationship. But just seeing them all rock out in "Crazy Horse" style was something else. The new material sounded really strong and came across really well live. The acoustic set was heavenly. The rude people behind us who had been talking during the first set even shut up for the acoustic segment. And then seeing Harry Carey on the big screen during the 7th inning stretch was really cool. I thought I heard Steven Stills say something like.."that was fatty's idea", looking over at David Crosby. So if you haven't seen them yet you are in for a real treat. Ashara, I hope you have a fabulous time on the 26th. Anyway, I'm going to sign off now, enjoying this incredible high from this vintage wine from '75. Thought I'd take a few and dish the latest on the covers project. A couple things: First, I'm no longer looking for any more material...I know there's more stuff out there, so we'll tackle a "Volume 3" at some future point. Four CD's is enough for now! :~) (Five if you count Volume 1) Second, I'd like to gauge what the demand is going to be for this set, so if you're interested in getting your very own 4-CD set of "Covers & Contributions", send me a private message. A couple of you have already volunteered to be branches, so I need to know what we're going to dealing in terms on interest. UK Note: Raffaelle will be getting a complimentary set as a contributor to the project and has graciously agreed to lend it to a fellow countryperson for branching in the UK, again if there's interest in distribution. So if you're a UK JMDL'er willing and able to be a branch, let me know and we can make that happen. Likewise for Canada, if you're interested in being a branch up there let me know. I'll send a couple seperate messages providing a synopsis of what you'll hear on the discs... And I've gottena renewed interested in the single disc Volume 1 and have been making copies of that for whoever wants it, so if you do want it let me know and we'll work that out...
