His voice is the first thing that makes one notice because it has this quality of not being too "produced" or "packaged". His turns of phrase in his songs are as evocative as Joni's. I listened this morning to Franks' THE ART OF TEA album and especially liked his "I Don't Know Why I'm So Happy I'm Sad" because in a single burst of feelings, he was able to capture that particular shade of ambivalent feelings we all felt in our lifetimes. The same way when Joni sang "All I Want" where there was this repetition of "I Hate You" and then redeeming it with "I Love You Some" that seems to negate the "I Hate You" feelings. That ambivalence and the songwriter's ability to capture that feeling is to me, a mark of a genius. My favorite Michael Franks album is: "Tiger in The Rain". I remember nagging whoever was closest to the stereo to play a quick bit of it for me amidst the Joni Karaoke sessions. What I heard was so beautiful that I was on a mission from that point forward to get ahold of this music for myself. I can't quite remember the details but think I later learned that there was no actual CD at the time that I could purchase from Fred - the music he sent to Julie was a one-off compilation/work in progress. I settled for getting Fred's gorgeous "Songs of the Beach Boys" but never gave up the wish for getting his "songs of Joni" so to speak. After a long, but patient wait, yesterday in my mail box I was surprised and delighted with "Songs of My Youth, Volume I". I think of it as Fred's own "Both Sides Now" - covering the memorable songs of his (and my) youth, including an original and a Beethoven for good measure, but starting right off with Joni's BSN, For Free and Michael From Mountains. Even the CD artwork shows the very young '70s Fred at the piano on the front cover and the '90s Fred on the back ;-) Other songs include The Beatles Blackbird, Julia, Here, There and Everywhere and For No One, Dylan's Times They Are A Changin, Fred's Maurice, and Beethoven's classic Ode to Joy. This is a very beautiful album which gives me the same kind of chills I get from Jimmy Webb's music. It sounds like he is playing live right in the room. I cannot explain in adequate or technical terms why this music is so special other than to say that it is transcendent. If I could see Fred play live at one of his gigs in Chicago, I would imagine myself curled up in a cushy chair with a dreamy smile on my face never wanting to move for hours. Bravo, bravo, bravo, Fred! And thank you - it was well worth the wait. Kakki NP: Ode to Joy - F. I certainly made no slurs. There are plenty of gays on this list who use the terms fags, queers, etc to describe themselves! the word poof I used, if read in context, is as they do in cartoons when something disappears in a cloud of smoke. I'm praying I will be in the country in May, but if, God forbid, I'm not, I've already arranged for the party at my place anyway ;-) I'm really regretting that I did not chat with Peter Erskine when I had the chance back in December. He and his new band with Bob Sheppard and Dave Carpenter were backing up Otmaro Ruiz that night. Erskine has such a warm and friendly persona and was very approachable but the little club seemed filled with music heavyweights that night, including Lyle Mays, all seeming to pay homage to him and I felt a bit like I was a fly on the wall at a private recording session ;-) From the looks of his schedule he is going to be touring constantly over the next year, but I hope he will maybe stop in here at the list again in the future. Bindy (if you remember the Indian girl from the London Jonifest) wanted to hear the new version of BSN, the song. The original was a song that was 'the song' of her time in India. The song started and the tentative strings came through the sound system and I must say, to hear it THAT BIG is something else. I mean, I have heard it really loud on my CD player, but hearing it all around you, coming up through the floor and the walls... I was in ecstasy. I can only imagine what Joni must have felt like singing the songs in front of the orchestra for real. That must've been a blast. We also played 'Don't Worry Bout Me' which was fantastic. When Wayne (I think, it's a sax solo) comes in and has that brief crescendo in the middle, Bindy and I just looked at each other and I could see her heart melt. The sound guy and the Theatre Manager who was also in both asked who it was and expressed an interest. I feel really lucky to have experienced it. It gave me a real yearning to have my warehouse of an apartment with a big f@@koff soundsystem. In my dweems we fwy.... Paul C posted the May dates for the upcoming tour. Like him, I'm downcast that nothing is mentioned of any dates in Europe/UK. I've never seen her yet, and I really want to. So here's a question. If a person was toying with the idea of flying over to the US to see one of her concerts, which is likely to be the best venue? (West Coast is out for reasons of economy, probably). Also, I gather that she will be employing local orchestras for each gig. Is this right? If so, which ones, and which is the best? All advice and opinions greatfully received. atb, Martin. Page 4........the index......has a nice picture of Joni in a chair (in her yard) with the caption: "It left a hole in me," says Joni Mitchell (at her Bel Air home) of giving up her daughter for adoption in 1965. There's a three page article with pictures on each page. The first one shows Joni holding her guitar (with another in the background) in front of one of her paintings. The next page has 3 pictures. Captions read: Pic of Joni on stage: Before there was Lilith Fair, Mitchell (left) joined Judy Collins and Joan Baez in Big Sur in 1969. Joni on piano, Larry on guitar with a kitty: "There's a lot of love between my ex-husband and me," Mitchell says of her longtime collaborator Klein (in 1985) Joni, Kilaurin and grandson: "A part of me was missing," Mitchell (with her daughter and grandson in '97) says of the time before her reunion with Gibb. Joni outside in her yard: "She's both frail and strong," Klein says of Mitchell (in her backyard). "She's very self-sufficient." Haven't read the article yet........just came in the mail!! I have been friends with Billy for many years through some old high school buddies and after the show we went for "cocktails" and rekindled our friendship. He told us alot of stories of the old days (one of which included meeting a very young Joni Mitchell in San Fransisco through some of the Airplane folks). He admitted to being not familiar with her stuff back then, but he said she was so beautiful that he quickly became familiar. Anyways I asked him if he would be interested in playing my little "side show circus" in May and he signed on happily. We also talked about those "acid laced" days of playing the Fillmore and Owsley and the Dead and on and on...we were laughing and carrying on like school kids for hours. till the next thing I knew it was 3am and forced myself to head home. Even though he has an infectious way with telling stories I really had to come to my senses and get some rest for work today (which has been blessfully slow). There are still plenty of rooms avialable for the event of the year if you are so inclined. Lahm is busy selecting band members for his set in New Orleans and as word gets out there we are getting so many more people signing on and we all would like YOU to be one of them. Later. Sometimes it was really annoying to watch all those very forced clips of other musicians trying to come up with something to say about other women in rock, but it was a great surprise to see Kate Pierson of the B-52s, complete with a cherry flavored bouffant, talking about Joni Mitchell as the very best. It's always wonderful to find out that other musical acts I admire are on the Joni bandwagon. The B-52s are about as different from Joni as you can get, but they remain one of my favorite fun, dance bands for over two and a half decades now. I suppose the one thing the B-52s have in common with Joni is that they are complete originals and something tells me their musical approach is also an instinctual one. They also sang a lot of songs with environmental themes. I gather they are though making new music which is a shame. - - Clark NP - Paul Simon, Rhythm of the Saints ------------------------------ Date: Fri, 10 Mar 2000 20:17:21 -0500 From: luvart@snet.net Subject: Re: NJC: When I'm 61! I was in junior high at the time... The stuff struck me as musical, lightly edgy and very sincere. I wouldn't put it on the same level as joni's music, but like joni's stuff, it provoked emotions that I enjoyed and could relate to. I can't say the same for the Police... Bowie's Ziggy stuff was pretty wild... all I can remember is when I saw Bowie/Ziggy thinking "there's a guy even more wacked out than I am" (no disrespect intended). I'm interested in getting some good seats for the upcoming NYC or Philly BSN shows. Anyone know how to get first or second row seats? Cost is not an object. When Joni was here with Dylan, the best I could come up with was tenth row, and I wished I was closer. Advantage 2: my family was there (I was a kid there) before WXRT was built, on the "prairie" as we called it then, just down the alley. The hours I rode my bike there... anyway, XRT sponsored your last Chicago tour, so picture this: we close the alley, we'll put the orchestra in the firehouse parking lot conveniently located right behind dad's yard and next to XRT, all of the Chicago JMDLers and those who can come JMDLers can fit in the alley, XRT can broadcast live and on the internet to connect to the JMDL everywhere, and come up with a more taking it to the streets, let's get back to the garden (my mom's garden is where you can sing) idea than this!
