I tossed and turned in bed for about an hour and then gave up to putter around the house. Logged onto my email figuring that I'd clean up my in-box of all that AOL spam promising me Brittany Spears XXXXXXASUVENEVERSEENHERXXXX and found this gem of a story. It was really beautiful and poignant. Thank you for sharing. I've gotten used to the way that Joni has touched all of our lives on our own basis, whether it be helping us to understand ourselves better or serve as a balm through troubled times. But I have never grown used to the way that Joni can often serve as a poignant glue between ourselves and the people we love. There is something so incredibly ethereal about being able to look into your lover's eyes and say "Coyote" or hum a few bars from "Crazy Cries of Love" and know that you have discovered the language of Eden. I have been listening to BSN since Valentine's Day and truly love it! Everytime I hear "Answer Me, My Love" it seems to me that Joni is singing directly to Kilauren...or at least that's how I imagine it! It's just the emotional quality of the song that makes me think this. Also, I LOVE how the next song is ACOY!!!!! Somehow the beginning tracks of ACOY just get to me right in the heart. I feel like crying everytime I hear it. I just moves me so!!! I keep wondering how strange it must have been for Joni to be pregnant and also how hard it must have been not to tell her parents about the baby. I'm also guessing that she must have been estranged from her parents at that time at least for a year or two because they never knew of her pregnancy or baby. Also, did her parents go to the wedding of Chuck and Joni? Wouldn't they have found out about the baby then if they attended? Just wondering..... I also think that for Joni to have had the baby for some time............and then to have given her up must have been SO painful. You can hear the sorrow in all her work from the past. Thankfully she got her daughter back! I also remember on the WTRF tour of '83 that on the concert program (I think it was on the program but I'm not sure) there was a painting of Joni pregnant looking down at her stomach... Does anyone remember that? I also always wondered about that. I guess she has always been searching for Kelly. I'm so glad that she has her daughter back! It wasn't until much later that I discovered Joni wrote it. >> Sorry to delay getting back to you, Neil...that cover of "Urge For Going" is indeed on its way here, but thanks for offering! If you have any others, let me know and I can let you know if they're spoken for... All three, Sting, Stewart Copeland, and Andy Summers are excellent musicians in their own right. Stewart Copeland's use of the cymbals is exquisite, and Andy Summers guitar textures were unique as well. The Police's records hold up MUCH better than Sting's solo stuff IMO...although he's certainly had more commercial success than the other two, which doesn't really signify anything. The Police integrated lots of rhythms and world music sounds in their music which simply wasn't heard. What Sting has done on his own is good, but it's derivative, even pilfering from his former songs. << of course elton was at times a show too. but i think elton's life is a show, and sting and bowie's are not. they have a private self that is not on display, where as elton hangs it all out. and he can sing, too. >> When Elton was good, he was very very good...the following are all classics: Tumbleweed Connection Madman Across The Water Goodbye Yellow Brick Road Don't Shoot Me, I'm Only The Piano Player Honky Chateau They're not in order, but I think if you put them in order they constitute one damn fine 5-album run, which not too many artists can claim. Too bad his records suck so bad now, but he can still get the job done on stage! PS: A Major thanks to those of you who spoke up about that David Crosby record. I picked it up and it is SMOKIN' excellent!! WOW! They included a little supplemental issue in the shrink wrap called Vanity Fair - Oscar Invasion! For those of you who aren't familiar, Vanity Fair holds an annual Academy Award party here in El Lay, and, afterward publicize the heck out of it in their glam mag. They have gone way over the top this year in the supplemental - Publicizing every year since the party's inception in 1994. Lo and behold - Joni made the centerfold! Well, actually a 3/4 of the way through fold. Dubbed in this issue Diva Destination, VF republished the famous pic of JM, Cher, Madonna, and k. d. lang in a *huge* full two page, Technicolor glory. It's so cool. JM looks like she's having a blast - giant smile! Not the most flattering pic, but that lady has the skin of a newborn. It looks like she's not wearing much - if any make up (contrary to Cher and Madonna, more akin to her fellow Canadian) but is showing this weird nail polish on her guitar stubbed fingernails. You gotta see it to believe it. Wish I knew how to show it to y'all. Take it easy. On the stroke of midnight on the last night of their 39th year they all go Poof! and disappear taking their 6 pack, 10 inches and bubbles with them. Coyote Responds: Catman, with all due respect, this made me kinda mad! Don't know your orientation, but that doesn't make much a difference. If you are a straight man, then, with all kindness, I ask that you please be advised that all gay men do not fit that shallow description. Further, most I know do not like being associated with a paragraph that includes the word Poof. Moreover, as a man who has lost many gay male friends not in a poof, but in an agonizingly slow death, I beg you to be more sensitive. If you are a gay man, then shame on you for perpetuating a stereotype and demonstrating such blatant disregard for our dead brothers. I wonder why it is that some people think it's cool to slam on sexual preference when they are too well-bred to even consider making a racial slur? Coyote is still be reeling from our terrible election results here in California. Probably tomorrow wishing he had just let this one pass. Like JM, Michael Franks has been writing and singing his own songs for over a quarter of a century. But whereas Joni has gone through several distinct and intense musical phases, and now seems to be approaching self-proclaimed burnout as a songwriter, MF has always been musically eclectic, and continues to be a prolific songwriter, fortunately. He is categorized as "Jazz," but that seems to be a catch-all for whenever a unique talent appears. There are many similarities to JM here: He writes from the heart about personal experience, uniquely synthesizing the lyric into the musical composition. He backs himself with some of the best musicians around, and even as his voice is smooth as silk, his tongue is often in his cheek, speaking in double entendre. His lyrics are tantalizing and the music catchy. One senses that even when MF is depressed, he has the capability to song-write his way out of it. His lyrics are not as intense or heavy as Joni's, but they fit perfectly with his catchy melodies. You should hear these lyrics sung!!! I know whereof I speak Believe me When it comes to the subject Of loneliness, look it up, you'll see There's a picture of me But that's ancient history now Completely Now when it comes to the subject Of happiness, I'm the man to see And my advice in summary: Look for a soul mate... *Soul Mate* -- Dragonfly Summer 1993 Antonio loves the desert Antonio prays for rain Antonio know that Pleasure Is the child of Pain And lost in La Califusa, When most of my hope was gone, Antonio's samba led me to the Amazon Sing the song Forgotten for so long And let the Music flow Like Light into the Rainbow We know the Dance, we have We still have the chance To break these chains and flow Like Light into the Rainbow *Antonio's Song* --Sleeping Gypsy 1977 What can I say?
