It seems most people bought Oasis' new album instead. (Their album is called 'Standing On The Shoulder Of Giants', which I'm sure should be ShoulderS. Or do all these giants have but one shoulder between them?) Interesting chart this week. Santana, AC/DC and Steely Dan have all put new albums out this week also, all doing much better than Joni unfortunately. And Tracy Chapman's first album is in again. I've noticed that this album has had a constant presence in the 'mid-price' top ten for about a year and a half. Now it's been re-released at full price and it's in the main charts again. Ms. Chapman has done very well out of that one! atb, Martin. ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 8 Mar 2000 21:18:21 +1100 From: "Alan Lorimer" Subject: Re: What kind of do are you? Their sound was unique at a time when conformity ruled. The songs ranged from blistering punk like "Landlord" to the tender touch of "Wrapped Around Your Finger", and has anyone else written love songs to an inflatable doll? ("Be My Girl Sally", which is exquisitely hilarious). They tackled larger issues as well, with songs like "Invisible Sun" & "One World is Enough", and could pop out a hit like nobody's business, even throwing in references to Nabokov and other writers/philosophers. The thing I admire most about the band is that they quit at the top of their game - they had a HUGE hit with Synchronicity, and instead of slogging on and trying to top it or even recreate it, they split to follow their respective muses. A lot of that 80's stuff may sound dated now, but not theirs! Incidentally, Joni was a huge Police fan too, besides admitting it, just give a listen to 'Shiny Toys'... She said that she'd gotten an advanced copy of the new CD ( which she didn't mention by name) and that she put it on last night because there wasn't anything but stupid election coverage on TV. She got somewhat emotional about the CD and said that it made her cry. I think she used the word beautiful... but I don't remember hearing the word "lush"... which seems to be the word everyone else uses. Anyway, it was a nice review and plug for the CD... and maybe Rosie will have Joni on the show again... thought hopefully this time she will not offer Joni an "Altoids". Since I don't post that often, let me also take this opportunity to mention a nice place to hear the new "Both Sides Now" on the radio... on now streaming on the net. Long time DJ Jonathan Schwartz (sp?) is now on the air on WNYC-FM New York on Saturday and Sunday afternoons. He plays a lot of cabaret singer type stuff... and a wide range of other things... and I have heard him play cuts from the new "Both Sides Now". You can hear it at www.wnyc.org . If you live in a place without a decent radio station, this is a good one, with both an AM and FM side. Lots of stuff worth listening to. And of course, in the NYC area, WNYC-FM is 93.9, and WNYC-AM is 82. They come from the Himalayan mountains where they developed on their own more or less. They are hardy strong and surprisingly heavy. They have good characters also. Of course, they have been changed almost beyobd recognition is the States, tho there are a few breeders who still know what a Lhasa Apso is and breed accordingly. "GO RAIBH MAITH AGAT" as we say in Ireland!! What a headache of a week I've had trying to sort out my passport (ok, so it was foolish to put it through the washing machine in the first place). I am trying to get approval for a work visa for the United States, and the consular wishes to see my passport! I came home yesterday, after having been in and out of the passport office all day, to listen to TI and found myself fully relaxed by Last Chance Lost. I'm one of these people that always reads the lyrics when listening to music, I remembered that someone commented on the poetic nature of The Sire of Sorrow recently, well, I echo his sentiments. I read a lot of poetry and tend to be prejudiced against songs with bad lyrics, and have almost always been impressed by JM's lyrics, but Sire of Sorrow went one further. It stayed in my head for all of the day. So, there is my point, it is a great song. I consider Gerard Manley Hopkins the best (most talented? my favourite?) poet that I've read, and this song reminded to me to a degree of his poetry. I'm off now to Amazon.com to order the JM Companion. I don't know if you're old enough to remember when "side" was slang for "record album." (Those were the vinyl days, of course.) Without her name in it, the title won't really help arouse the interest of people who know JM, but don't know jazz or me. That's the way we're thinking of the situation now. Well, I got my copy yesterday (only £12.99 in MVC) but I'm not *quite* ready to play it yet....probably tomorrow :-) I definitely agree with Colin on the artwork. It's lovely, really classy. I've already scanned the CD sleeve and included it on my Genius Of Joni page. I have also altered the background colour schemes to this page and all the others. The Joni page is now a peachy colour on terracota/brown. Anyway, the BSN cover looks really good on there :-) I've been quiet on here lately, simply because I've been trying to delete some of the 9,500 e-mails that had accumulated in my inbox :o) It's now down to a far more managable 1,500 Jason. I have formerly appeared on the list as RickyRacer and Richard in Hollywood, ashamed of my Joni-inspired nickname. Gonna come clean with my new found friends in electronic space. Several years ago, around the time of the song begetting my nickname, I was furiously dating a musician from Laguna Beach. Our passion was ignited by Joni. I walked into a sleazy bar in Laguna one night. A place frequented by those somewhat long and in the tooth and usually quite a ways down into their bottles. Run by a butch bull dyke, and a mean-spirited former sailor, they encouraged those with too much money and too weak of soul to say no to frequent the joint. Lecherous fools, enamored with the broke piano player. I found my gorgeous blonde Texan singing People's Parties in lieu of New York, New York or Send in the Clowns. The cloudy-minded crowd was oblivious to the rarity of hearing such beautiful music and pelted Billy with requests for some real scary stuff. Occasionally, he teased them with some of it, yet, this time stared at me as he picked his next tune - Creepin', originated, I think by Stevie Wonder. Much to the disdain of the inebriated ones. He and I lived on opposite ends of the spectrum of life, yet fell passionately in love. I was 22 and showed Appaloosa horses for a living, surfing part time and living with my trainer in Laguna Canyon. He was 26 and sang good music in bad places late into the night. As a cheap confession, I admit to you some 22 year old misbehavior on my part. Misbehavior I had no idea he had discovered. On cue, some six months of sleepless nights later, Joni released Hijera. Droopy eyed from being up since 5AM, I entered the piano bar one night at 11PM at just the right time. He had developed his version of Coyote and sang it with more than some passion. At the end of the set, he said something to me like "I get off just up the road." I was confused, and he told me to go to Laguna Music the next day and buy Hejira, an album I didn't know existed. I bought it the next day and the song Coyote slapped me in the face. A few letters exchanged, a few tears were shed, but it was clear we were through. After some time, we found our way to friendship and stayed as such until his early death about three years ago. He called me Coyote, and it caught on. I never have intentionally listened to Hejira again. Joni has somewhere, somehow found her way into all of my relationships. Those before or since. Not just by *my* finding a place for her in these private times, but by the objects of my affection placing her somewhere between us. I have always sought a relationship with a man holding no tolerance for our Ms. Mitchell, only to be disappointed in the end. Sorry for the long post. It's a bittersweet story I have never told anyone, fearing no one would understand. When asked how I got my strangely beloved nickname of Coyote, I would always smile and say it was given to me by a good friend. Billy was my first true love and when I am called that today, I feel 22 and so in love again. Thanks for that, Joni. Coyote Responds: I think the Lounge Scene is alive and well, albeit not as fruitfully as it was some four years ago, but it still lives here at Casa Alegre. I think of the Lounge Scene more in the music of Louis Prima and the like. I did find a couple of renditions of Stormy Weather in my collection of twelve or so lounge CDs, but that was it from BSN. The Lounge music I have has a lot more camp than one will find on BSN. Hey Bellboy! I recall Joni on Rosie the day after Thanksgiving some three or four years ago. She was promoting TT or maybe TI, can't remember. She was in bad shape with some throat infection and Rosie gave her lozenges - I read somewhere (maybe the Vanity Fair valentine piece) that Joni didn't even know who Rosie was before that appearance. I remember being disappointed with Rosie for not getting more good stuff out of JM, but chalked it up to JM not feeling well. I planted myself at the bar and immediately noticed Larry Klein dining alone a few feet away and then he disappeared. Right before she came on stage, I ran outside for a last cigarette and saw Klein coming up the sidewalk. I addressed him as (swear to God) *Mr.* Klein (the Peter Erskine "incident" has made me more formal these days, ahem) and congratulated him on the BSN album and gave him my best. He was very kind and shook my hand and thanked me. I was tempted to ask for an autograph for the *other* Larry Klein but got too shy ;-) Coyote Responds: Kakki, thanks for this post. I am a huge fan of Julia's and am damn mad at myself for missing this local show.
