Music I have rarely, if ever, heard here and that I absolutely love. In fact my very first tape trade here on the list included two long tapes of Livingston Taylor material live from back in 1970. I went nuts over them because, even though he is a well-known institution around NE, you simply cannot find him here and I always had to special order his albums. Awhile back a list friend sent me a large tape compilation of the New England folksingers, including the great Cheryl Wheeler, which I took with me to Boston to play in the rental car! I since have learned that our own Linda Worster is a distinguished member of that group, too, and that Liv T. has even played on one of her albums! Ahhh! Funnily, A Case Of You plays just fine, but both CDs skip badly during You're My Thrill. I feel totally bummed out about having to send this all back to CDNow again and having to wait another month to listen to this beautiful music properly. I have asked CDNow for a store credit this time instead of replacements (why tempt fate???) and I will wait for the standard version. Mojo claims it "knocks George Michael's efforts into a pre-war trilby hat", saying that with this album Joni was "closer than ever to the terrain that great performers occupy". Whilst Q Magazine has used a none too flattering picture of Joni with the caption "Ever wondered what happened to Rick Wakeman's hair?", they still give the album a 4 star rating. However the one that has surprised (and pleased) me the most is in this week's 'Time Out', London's main listings magazine. Here's the full review, by Ross Fortune. "If you've nothing to say, why keep on saying it over and over. There's a calm dignity in silence. The '90s saw just three new releases from Joni Mitchell. Two were impressive if formulaic affairs. One sought to break free stylistically but fell flat and sounded a little feeble. News, then, that Mitchell's latest album was to be a collection of covers hardly inspired confidence. Particularly when - after similarly themed sets from George Michael and Bryan Ferry - it was revealed to be a selection of 'classic twentieth century love songs'. And yet, confounding expectations, the album is a masterpiece, her best since 'Hejira' in 1976. And her voice has never sounded better. Accompanied by a big band and orchestra (featuring Mark Isham, Herbie Hancock and Wayne Shorter), here are torch songs and standards ('Stormy Weather', 'You're my Thrill', 'Answer Me, My Love' etc) imbued with a richly romantic sense of grandeur and craft. She also covers a couple of her own songs (the title track and 'A Case of You'), both of which fall at what would have been the close of each side of a vinyl record. I don't know why they're called "Boys" (much less the BoomTang thang) since the only voice you hear and the only person you see on their videos is a girl named Kim Estey (Sp?) It's a dance-type version, Kim has a pretty voice, but apart from that, there's nothing remarkable about it - sounds kind of like the Judy Collins version, sped up a bit with one of those fake drum-beat thingies behind it. I don't know if you'd get this outside Canada since I think they're Canadian (but I'm not sure!) If you have a 12-year old in the house, your odds of hearing it increase substantially. If you're in or near Toronto and said 12-yr-old (whoa, she turned 13 on Feb 25, didn't she?) listens to CISS-FM, you've probably heard it, whether you wanted to or not. It's very current, so probably not what you're looking for, and I was going to avoid bringing the whole thing up at all, but what the hey... About the time that WTRF came out Joni did a 'special' on BBC Radio one. It was called My Top Ten. I recorded it from the radio for no other reason than hearing Joni speak. Her voice in coversation was as rare as hen's teeth in those days in Britain. One of the songs she chose to play as one of her top ten songs was Stevie Wonder's 'That Girl'. Listening to it used to make the hair on the back of my neck especially when he broke into the chorus. I've never been able to find this song on an album release and wondered if anyone knew which one it was on. By the way, another track that she played was Edith Piaf's Les Trois Cloches. She used that song to illustrate the influence it brought to a song she wrote for the WTRF collection but which didn't surface until NRH where it had become 'Two Grey Rooms'. She played this earlier version which featured a scat vocal and was light-heartedly called 'Speechless'. She said at the time that because of the 'french diphthong' present in the 'singing' she hoped to put a french lyric to it. Other music in the show, so far as I can remember, were, You've Changed sung by Billie Holliday, Nefertiti by Miles Davis, a Peter Gabriel song - I think it was Shoot the Monkey(?) and Stravinsky's Rite of Spring.
