During the course of the audition, Stills was told that they were looking for someone like him, but with "better teeth and hair." First between the ages at which puberty is attained. Second it changes when one reaches about the age of fourty BUT that depends I think more on the change in lifestyle. The last time I believe is after 55 or 60. Although Tony Bennet argues for some flexibility in this thought. Theres a basic voice quality that remains. The inflections etc. Those depend on annunciation which is related as much to the persons singing accents. The greater factor is the muscular. people simply tend to sing less as they get older and their lifestyle changes. the voice is like any other muscle. If it isnt used or if its used every day then it stays in different levels of "shape". When one allows ones voice to go unused various parts of the vocal chords get out of shape. If one tries after years of abstinence to all of a sudden go on a tour they will find that they blow their chords out. One needs to treat the singing voice like any other delicate instrument (which it is). If the breathing technique is neglected then the chords have to work too hard and or get stretched without prior exercising. Its just like someone who in high school was a top notch long distance runner. Maybe even won the state cvhampionship and then doesnt run for 10 years. That person certainly wouldnt enter a marathon out of the blue and expect to finish. Might even seriously hurt themself trying to do it. Singing is no different. Joni has simply gravitated towards the convenient. We dont know if shes doing regular exercises or not with her voice. She may or may not be. Her final factor is the smoking. No doubt smoking leaves deposits on all areas of her vocal chords. Add an extended period of non-use and she may have made it extreemly difficult for herself to regain the use of the areas of the chords that make transitioning to different registers more problematical. Take the long distance runner who takes 30 years off and tries to pick up running again. They will never get back to where they were in their youth although they can get along pretty far. It has taken me the last three months of fairly steady music practice to get back much of my my old voice since I stopped singing for some time. Ive been doing this in preparation for Pazfest 2000. Now three months into the practice project things are much better than they were when I started. But it was more work than I ever imagined. For a while there I was thinking I cant do it anymore. Im finding that not totally true. In Jonis experience she has learned to adapt the style to the reality. Sounds this way to me. Shes the same in her instrument use. She has hunkered down behind the VG-8. Is that because she can no longer play piano. I doubt it. Shes just less aggressive in using many instruments as opposed to one. ------------------------------ Date: Sat, 4 Mar 2000 16:00:56 EST From: CaTGirl627@aol.com Subject: Re: Covers Project Update (LONG but all Joni) NJC In a message dated 3/4/2000 8:39:24 AM Eastern Standard Time, SCJoniGuy writes: << 6. On my way to North Park College in Chicago, taking the bus, back in 1970 for English 191, waiting for the bus at 6 Corners to get to my final, I saw in the window: blue suede shoes. I waited until the store opened. I bought my blue suede shoes. I took the bus (having missed several) and arrived at the final exam very late. I casually changed shows, while my instructor stared at me, and aced the exam, finishing early. As she grabbed my arm as I left the final exam early, I said, "you can say what you choose, but stay off of my blue suede shows." The rest of the class cringed in horror: this was one stern teacher I was talking to. She looked at me and said, "nice shoes." Gave me a A on the final, B+ for the class, and was my friend forever after. Those baby blue suede shoes are long gone. However, every pair of shoes I wear is blue. Thanks to Reebok, Bastad of Sweden (my favorite clogs), and Birkenstock (they are ok but they get loose) and careful shopping at going out of business sales, I have been able to cover my feet in blue shoes, if not blue suede. I have dress blues, sports blues, go to games blues. work blues, and casual blues, even a pair of garden blues. The 1997 blue Converse go to game shoes were retired with honor after the University of Michigan (Go Blue!) won the national championship.... When I get suede Bastad, I have blue suede Swede shoes. Ah, hooked on that feeling; it feels me with blue cheer. So should you be walking down the street and notice a man with blue shoes, it may well be me; come and say hi, but stay off of my blue suede shoes! And no, I have no strange habits, quirks, or obssessions. But my favorite Joni album is: Blue... and waytoblu thinks that HE is way too blue.... :-) (the Rev) Vince, now wearing a comfortable 7 year old pair of blue Bastad's, size 41 (although new shoes need be a 42), and thinking of ordering a new supply for the year and at least a new pair for this bishop think... ------------------------------ Date: Sat, 04 Mar 2000 17:31:59 -0500 From: Vince Lavieri Subject: Re: 69 Leather Lane NJC catman wrote: > BSN was in the Peterborough Virgin today. Or if the virgin be male, is he still a virgin? Will it hurt to take the BSN's out of the virgin? And what, for the sake of decency, is a virgin doing at 69 Leather Lane?
