Inside one of West Hollywood's lesser known gay bars with a Western motif (they used to sponsor my old softball team) was famous film critic Rex Reed with none other than Mark Christian, Rock Hudson's last lover who won a major windfall of millions of dollars when he sued the late Mr. Hudson's estate for putting him at risk of contracting HIV which he didn't get. What a world .... Anyway, I told Rex that I had read his review of BSN here on the JMDL, which if you didn't read it, was an out and out rave. I asked Rex if he had liked Joni's other music. He said he did not, that he didn't care for folk music or her voice. Well, of course I made some attempt at trying to explain that Joni may have come out of folk music and the venues where it was played, but that she was never really a folk singer and had been working with jazz musicians since 1974 and had alienated a lot of her fans when she made an out and jazz album in collaboration with Charles Mingus. "Peter, Paul and Mary, Woody Guthrie and the Weavers -- that's folk music," I said, "music that folks can sing along with (Other than the Circle Game, how many of Joni's "folk" songs could people sing along with? Let's see a couple of hundred people try and sing along with That Song About the Midway)." Mark Christian came to my defense and had some Joni knowledge and said that Joni was always a cut above the other folk singers. That's like saying champagne is a cut above Kool-Aid, but whatever. Anyway, Rex said he hadn't liked Joni's earlier voice or her kind of music, but now her voice was so smokey and beat-up she could capably sing these great standards of jazz. His least favorite cuts were A Case of You and Both Sides Now, which makes sense. Anyway, the interesting thing that Mark Christian said was that an album had been recorded by Joni, Joan Baez and Judy Collins that was never released because of squabbles between these artist's different record companies. I doubt the veracity of this very interesting piece of hearsay -- but just in case, I thought I would throw it out to our very thorough discographers and music historians to dispute or hopefully support this story because just maybe, someone has a bootleg copy of this Joni/Judy/Joan record. Afterwards, Rex and Mark and I all agreed that with the homogenization of the world, and this being a period in which we are at peace, with little agitation for social issues, and a long wave of prosperity, all of it results in a generally (and I mean GENERALLY!) uninteresting time for all the arts. I asked Rex if he ever felt like he just couldn't see another fucking movie and he said he was feeling that way right now. - - Clark NP - Mingus ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 28 Feb 2000 04:05:43 EST From: CarltonCT@aol.com Subject: anyone got an iMac? (NJC) How do you make an MP3 file? I just burned CDs for four demos of songs that I wrote and sing and had arranged for me. I just downloaded a RealPlayer on my iMac. What do I have to do to turn my CD into a file so that I can send an MP3 to anyone who'd like to give them a listen? These songs turned out very interestingly. The producer is a British guy with a regimented pop style and is fond of electronic effects so it sounds like I've been making music with ABBA and the Pet Shop Boys. Not exactly what I had in mind, but interesting all the same. It was tied up for many years before it was released, and some of the songs appeared individually on their respective albums before being released on Trio. All I've got is this webtv, and outside of this list I barely even use it. I think it's ridiculous for people to get all emotionally bent out of shape by something someone writes who they don't even know personally. I mean, get a life! If people want Joni content, go to "Only Joni Digest". What's your problem? If I'm going to read what anyone's opinions are, I'd respect Joni fans more than "just anyone". Fortunately, I've never had an attraction for tobacco, so it's not an issue for me. However, I definitely have my share of bad habits and addictions and can relate to the compulsive/ addictive syndrome. If I was rich I would check into some kind of health retreat where I could get the support for replacing bad habits with good ones. I know I can do this on my own, it just takes longer. Just because things seem a certain way, doesn't mean they really are that way, and just because things have always been a certain way, doesn't mean they always will be that way. I am referring specifically to the mass belief that "death" is inevitable. "Only when you die are you free to live", means to me that the "ego"-- the part that calls itself "I" but is separate from the Source--must indeed "die", so that the REAL "I"--the True Self, IS Free to Live--For- ever! The common belief that no matter what you do or don't do, your body is eventually going to die doesn't make sense to me. I am 43 years "young" and every sign of aging I can attribute as a direct result of self abuse. As Joni has put it, "We've got to get ourselves back to the Garden". (*JONI CONTENT!*) The closer we get to to living Life in Its natural state--in Harmony with Nature and Spirit, the more we will outpicture health and beauty. This may sound like so many words, but anyone who sincerely wants to know the Truth has an opportunity to prove it for yourself. I am not motivated by a fear of death, just a desire for Truth, and raising my vibration to pure Light and "Ascending" makes a lot more sense than getting old and "dying". Even tho' the closest example of that is Jesus, that's enough for me, as I have been blessed to believe and understand the words, "And even greater things than these shall ye do" That's enough for now! I quite agree with that. Our true self certainly lies beyond the ego. The has grown out of the fear of death-the whole purpose of the ego is to defend itself from the inevitable-the demise of the ego. > > > The common belief that no matter what you do or don't do, your body is > eventually going to die > doesn't make sense to me. (*JONI CONTENT!*) The > closer we get to to living Life in Its natural state--in Harmony with > Nature and Spirit, the more we > will outpicture health and beauty. I think there is a lot of truth in what you have written, have come across this many times, and take some of it on board. However, to go from this to saying that if we lived right we would not get sick, age or die, I think is wrong. We are spirit first and last and we will return to a state of being just spirit and in order for that to happen we will physically die. I don't believe we are meant to physically live forever. I believe it is the ego that grasps on to this belief in this way. 'if I do all the right things, fill myself with light, I can control my body and hence I will not die' So the ego is at it again-fighting off what it fears.a few years ago a friend of mine, who followed this way of thinking, got sick with cancer. she died feeling ashamed and guilty and believing she had done something wrong, that she wasn't good enough because this belief system and the various gurus and books that support such thinking, led her to believe that if only she could get it right, she would beat her cancer. She got got cancer and died. Nothing she could have done and she didn't not cause it. People are not blame for their dieases. people are not to blame for the disadvantages they may have been born with. Tho there are those that cruelly suggest people born with problems are born so because of wicked deeds or some such in a previous life. Just another way of blaming the victim. > > > This may sound like so many words, but anyone who sincerely wants to > know the Truth has an opportunity to prove it for yourself. It is wise to bear in mind that no one actually knows Truth, i.e. absolute Truth. We can only know our own inner Truth. What we decide is Truth is just that-a decision we made-not aboslute Truth. We can only make constructions from our own ideas and our own experiences. That is all we have. we are not able to see outside of ourselves. reality is only what we perceive it to be and we cannot perceive absolute reality at all. we perceive only what our brain is able to perceive.I think when we leave our physical bodies we will know a different reality but even then it won't be an absolute reality-that may come with further growth. Having said all that, the better we think of ourselves and others, the happier we are likely to be and the more health we will enjoy-generally. However, this will not prevent death on a physical level happening nor will it prevent dire sickenss nor ageing. Having spent most of my life(but not now) extremely stressed and with more than one serious physical illness, i have ended up looking younger than i am, feeling better than i ever have. I also feel young but thatv is hard to compare as I have no idea how other 41 yr olds feel so cannot compare! It goes back to only knowing my own inner world. I cannot know yours and visa versa. bw colin > > > That's enough for now! > > Love and Light from Rainbow in Hawaii - -- To change the world-change your self "It is better to be hated for what you are than to be loved for what you are not." ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 28 Feb 2000 18:01:04 -0500 From: waytoblu@mindspring.com Subject: Benefit for David Wilson!!!( NJC) Recently, a close friend of mine David, was diagnosed with a rare liver disease(ironically called Wilson's disease.) If it weren't for the melody, I would have barely recognized it ( lyrically speaking). Do you guys know this rendition(maybe a rough draft)....!?! 'Just before our ship got lost,I am as constant as a northern star. You silly as a northern fish says I ( No mention of a 'Blue T.V. Screen Light') "On A cartoon coaster pack, you didn't make me laugh at all" "I drew a map of Canada, and charged it all to..!?#?"......( I couldn't recognize this.) "I'm frightened and scared to death by angels " Pours out of me, Black and red design." A Case Of You has always been a favorite song of mine. When I heard this rendition, I listened to the "Blue Album" and then "BSN" WOW! This is obviously a song that means alot to Joni. She has been recreating it for decades. I'm in tears right now listening to her BSN. jody ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 29 Feb 2000 00:09:35 -0500 From: "Jim L'Hommedieu" Subject: The Pretenders & Chrissy Hynde Hi folks, I just want to weigh in with this recommendation: np: Chrissy Hynde's "Isle of View" CD which I bought at a pawn shop for about 1/5th of what a new CD would have cost. The sound is _extra-ordinary_ and the versions are flawless! My copy was originally bought from BMG music club. Recommended? You bet! "Never paint your masterpiece under artificial light." C. In a sidebar article, the author talks about some interesting Joni references-here it is: As far as I know, never once-even after that stormy conversation (with Geffen), did Mr. Geffen tell anyone not to talk to me. Nonetheless, I learned that many people are simply not ready or willing to talk about the experiences they had with David Geffen. The most dissappointing rejection came from singer Joni Mitchell, who memorialized him as her 'Free Man in Paris' and was for a time his platonic housemate. Mr. Geffen had said many disparaging things about her to me and worried aloud about whom I would believe in depicting their story. "If I didn't talk to her for the rest of my life, I wouldn't miss her for a minute," Mr. Geffen told me. After numerous unanswered letters and phone calls from me, Ms. Mitchell's manager finally phoned one day to say she would do a short telephone interview. The next day, he called back and said she had reconsidered. Joni Mitchell did not want to talk about David Geffen. The author is Tom King, and his book is called, "The Operator". There was also a characature diagram called the 6 Degrees of David Geffen- He set up a date for Warren Beatty with our Joni... ------------------------------ End of JMDL Digest V2000 #121 ***************************** Don't forget about these ongoing projects: Glossary project: Send a blank message to for all the details.
