In the UK, there is a low-priced Double CD of all their singles from 1977-1992 entitled "Fossil Fuel - The Singles Collection". The thing with XTC is that by and large their singles did tend to be the best tracks from their albums. I consider them to be one of the finest British singles bands of all-time. I'm also particularly proud of the very snazzy embossed Fossil CD case which came at a slightly higher price with intial copies. As for the music, well....my personal fave studio album is 1989's Oranges & Lemons, a sprawling, ingenious and fabtastic 15-track album which includes "Mayor Of Simpleton" and (in the US only) also "Dear God". For sheer diversity, it can't be beaten. 1992's Nonsuch (including "Peter Pumpkinhead") struck me as more of the same. Wonderful in places, but it didn't seem to move on too much from O&L. I'm still not sure about Apple Venus Vol.1. Ironically for their first album since leaving a major label, it's probably more commercial than either O&L or Nonsuch. I adore Easter Theatre, but some of the tracks have yet to grow on me. Yes, the Apple Venus Demo release is confusing, I agree. I haven't heard it, but assuming that the title is accurate, I would imagine it's paired-down acoustic versions of the Apple Venus songs....which, considering the inner sleeve of Apple Venus Vo.1 proudly announces "Vol.2 coming soon", is a mite baffling. Why not just put out Vol.2???? Hope that helps! Jason. http://freespace.virgin.net/jason.maloney/index1.htm PS. IMO Santana did deserve all of the grammies that he won, but there was plenty of good music last night. And, even though I work as Renaissance music specialist, the electronic processing on Cher's voice sounds very cool to me. If anyone deserves kudos as a dance diva, it should be Cher -- she has worked hard all her career. You can knock the other performers if you want, though. I hear they're running a special on boy bands. A few questions: 1. What, exactly, is Joni-fest? My questions concern basic info needed such as, when is it being held, are the performers professionals (I am self-taught and more-or-less intuitive as a pianist and guitarist and don't know if such players are allowed) 2. I can't find the CDC transription on the home-page. Where is it? I guess that's all. Just wanted to say that this is a delightful collection of souls and I always look forward to reading the posts. I echo Don's sentiments, and like earlier posters, I was actually surprised by how *mild* Joni sounded in this interview - from the first reports, I was expecting something more blistering. I do think that Joni goes overboard sometimes about her lack of recognition in the industry. But when I caught myself starting to write about her "incessant whining," it occurred to me it seems "incessant" to us because we are reading essentially the same interview over and over. It's like a stump speech. But what she has to say about the music industry is valid and important, and those normal people (unlike us) who perhaps only read ONE Joni Mitchell article will probably experience her remarks as trenchant criticism, not incessant whining. Her "whining" is also almost always funny and entertaining - which makes it less like whining, no? Deb Messling messling@enter.net http://www.enter.net/~messling/ I love cats. Hi everyone... resident onlyjoni lurker here. Just wanted to say I'm really glad I'm on this list... makes me feel good to know there are other people who feel like I do. I'm probably one of the youngest Joni fans here (22), and I just recently acquired Joni's entire catalog. My favorites are Ladies of the Canyon and For The Roses. Anyway... I too am not into the whole techno "thing" and my liking for the whole "typical gay lifestyle" has diminished to almost naught. It's weird... you think coming out is the answer to all your problems, that you'll "fit in"... but in fact it's almost the opposite, in my experience at least. I guess I may as well gripe about BSNLE. I ordered it via CDNOW and it did come scratched, with A Case Of You being the affected track. I will most likely send it back to Reprise for a replacement. Other than that... it's a great album. I especially love "You're My Thrill." If Joni herself came on and said something to the effect of "Hi everyone! I wanted to thank you for your appreciation all these years. Really, it's meant so much to me. I'm open for questions if you would like and would it be OK for me to give my impressions on some of your threads also? Ya know, do you mind if I hang out here on occasion?" My first BSN-LE from CDNow was scratched too and skipped on one track. I e-mailed CDNow and inquired if I could send back only the disc, because the rest of the special edition (box, lithos, etc.) was in perfect condition. They explained that in order to get a replacement I'd have to send back the entire contents. I was hesitant to do this knowing it was a limited edition and also had not received the other copy (yet) that I ordered from Reprise...my fear was that I'd end up with *no* copies! :-( But CDNow sent a return authorization along with a sticker for the package return so it didn't cost me further postage. In the meantime, they went ahead and shipped another BSN-LE to me, before I had a chance to send the old one back. I thought this was great customer service and am happy to report that my replacement LE plays perfectly. So thought Id mention that I thought of Mark last night when I went to see Jane Champion's "Holy Smoke" with Kate Winslett as the Eastern religion convert and Harvey Keitel as the de-programmer. I found the movie to be sometimes brilliant (Kate) and sometimes a mess (Harvey,) but I think I understand what Champion was trying to say...but I won't go there today. What I want to describe here for all of you music-lovers out there in jmdlland was the 20 minute surreal, inspiring opening credit. It blew me away!!! and made me think that a profound cinematic event was about to be revealed in the next two hours. (Kinda yes and kinda no...) The beginning scenes unfold in the heart of India where we are shown the sensual sweaty imagery of Kate Winslett, who is riveting as she succumbs (in slow-mo) to become a spiritually enlightened goddess who is deeply over-taken by her cosmic awakening. Champion shot Kate to look so pungent, earthy and ripe---that you'll quickly forget about her sanitizied commercial role in "The Titanic." So, my friends as this profound religious conversion is breathtakingly shot-----Champions music choice to accompany these scenes is NEIL DIAMOND!!! And it **moved** me---I could feel the song in my heart as it carried me away with the scenes. I've never been into Neil Diamond's-"you-don't-bring-me-flowers-anymore-"shmaltzy music and hadn't heard "Holly Holy" in years and years. "Who could guess that an old pop standard by Neil Diamond would be put to use in such a way that would rise to the level a Ravi Shanker raga?" (not by quote, but I stole it off the film b-board.)It's both surreal and ecstatic. And a little amusing too because it was...well, Neil Diamond. -JulieZwebb ps, Does anyone know the story behind the following Neil Diamond song? Tim, It may have been distasteful, but some of us are very passionate when it comes to the ethics of *trading* tapes. The post(s) that you refer to served a very useful purpose, IMO. By letting us know about this unscrupulous "trader," Catgirl has reinforced what most of us believe is the *right* way to conduct ourselves. If the allegations are true, this "trader" was *given* the recordings and is now trying to make a profit by selling them. Whenever one participates in a JMDL "tree" it's understood that the product WILL NOT be sold...that's not at all in the spirit of "sharing the music" which has always been the goal here. It was the alleged perpetrator who turned on the flames. A person whom I don't think ever contributed to this list. I believe Catgirl did the *right* thing by trying to get him shut down and letting him know he was *wrong.* Scott ------------------------------ End of JMDL Digest V2000 #113 ***************************** Don't forget about these ongoing projects: Glossary project: Send a blank message to for all the details.
