I am aware of McCain's views on many things that I am diametrically opposed to. We had a long discussion about this at our local Dems meeting on Sunday last (I am Bradley chair for our caucus). There are other strategic considerations in doing what I did, and I was joined by many, many people. Are we fools? Perhaps. Frankly, the thought of Bush exhausting himself financially because he is losing primaries and the ever widening chasm in the GOP delights me. And if my party nominates Gore, which it may well do, we are weak on the issue of finance reform, aren't we, and both parties need to know that a lot of us want campaign finance reform, and want it now. And - please note that Senator John Kerry of MA, one of the most liberal of senators, has a long history with McCain and that those two people who were diametrically opposed on the issue of Vietnam have found a convergence of mutual respect speaks very well of McCain - and Kerry - as not being doctrinaire, but possessing an openness to growth and change. The moment that Bush spoke at Bob Jones University, McCain had my vote in the primary. Today I returned to doing door to door for Bradley and the Dems, and I have my Gore shirts and hats on order, and will work for Gore should the need arise. Now two last thoughts: I started this but I don't intend to continue discussing partisan politics on the JMDL, and almost didn't post this, but I did want to answer Fred's very wise cautions with, yes, you may be right, but so may I be right in this one action. And for any Republicans who think that Dems were messing in their primary... there is a lot of history of that the other way in this state (it was the Day of Revenge for 1972, in some ways) but if we were trying to hurt the GOP, we would have voted for Keyes. As it was, I acted to support finance reform and reject Bob Jones/Pat Robertson and those who seek their favor with a vote for one who doesn't. Then again, having gotten a most flawed replacement BSN-LE today, skips in places the first one didn't, I may vote for a candidate who promises me a working Joni c.d. :-) (the Rev) Vince ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 23 Feb 2000 19:06:26 -0500 From: "Jim L'Hommedieu" Subject: Fw: Audiophile's Corner; NJC; Long You're too modest Joseph! Your stuff is not mid-fi. It's entry-level hi-end, just like mine! I have an old Rega Planar 3. It came with what I'm told is a RB250 arm. Since I moved the left speaker 1 & 1/2 feet to the left, I'm hearing all kinds of stuff I never heard clearly before. I can hear the cartridge moving through the groove. It's sort of a swishing , no a whooshing sound. I'm trying to convince myself that I don't really need a Planar 25 but it's nice to dream. Like you, I also have NAD electronics: An NAD integrated in the turntable's closet, another NAD integrated to switch sources and run the Mirage M3si speakers and another NAD integrated to power the entry-level, 15 year-old Stax headphones. It ain't perfect but no system is. And it's all been bought with cash- I never borrowed money for stereo stuff. Best of all, my stuff doesn't break! The cartridge is an Ortofon that I got as a demo and it has its third stylus on it. My theory on CD players is just to buy Sony midfi for the next 20 years until they figure it out. I figure that Sony knows at least a little about the highend, something I can't say is true about Sharp, Tatung, etc. I guess I'm understanding what you mean about being a music fan- not a tweaky equipment freak. Some people buy stuff every 6 months! If I won the lottery, I'd buy a house with a basement and tear out the first floor, making a 16 foot tall music room! I'd have to get a massive turntable like one of those VPI jobs. I had a Hafler DH200 (100 watts per side) for about 15 years after building it from a kit. The only time it gave me a problem was when I wired "surround" speakers across the channels and blew it up. They fixed it for me very quickly and for about $80 or so. Oh yeah, the power switch was real junky but I ended up switching it from the preamp after I replaced the switch. After I tried my first NAD and found no difference in sound, I sold off the Hafler for the same money I had into it!! Anyway, I tried a huge Carver amp that dimmed the lights at power on, but it also sounded no different from the NAD (20 watts or so- I have a small room.) My latest power amp is a Acurus A 150 but it sounds no different also. I'll try it again now that the speakers are imaging better. I keep thinking that the way to good, taut, musical bass is through a powerful amp but I'm deciding that speaker / listener seat are more important. God knows that the Mirages are putting it out- I just haven't found the right places for everything. Or maybe the room is incapable. Sorry to run on. I haven't posted in ages, but I want to publicly thank Jim Lamadoo for the tape tree tapes: THANK YOU, JIM!!! And thanks to all who have generously posted coupons for Internet music stores; I'm eagerly awaiting the arrival of my very own scratched-up limited edition of BSN. I recently had a Joni Object Sighting: A couple of weeks ago, I went to Whistler, B.C. for the "gay ski week" with 3 friends. We're all Joni fans to varying degrees. I, of course, think Joni hung the moon. Anyway, we were at an aprez-ski happy hour in the Whistler Hard Rock Cafe, standing in a corner and feeling a bit self-conscious, old, and scrawny among all of the beautiful and tragically hip people, when we started looking at the decorations on the walls. All around the room, high on the walls near the ceiling, hung autographed guitars. Our eyes scanned from guitar to guitar, reading the autographs, amused. Then I looked at the guitar hanging on the wall directly over my head. I about wet my britches when I saw Joni's signature on the guitar! (The beer might have had something to do with that, too). Of course, we immediately started brainstorming how to sneak off with the guitar (pull a fire alarm...borrow a waiter's uniform...pretend to be a guitar maintenance technician...do an interpretive, yet distracting tabletop dance with VERY large veils...hide under a table until the place closed...pretend we were EMTs wheeling out a corpse under a sheet...etc.). I took one day off from skiing during the middle of the week to relax and heal from my many falls. I was watching a Canadian comedy channel that morning when they cut to a phony commercial: seated on a stool was a blond woman in layered clothing wearing a beret playing an acoustic guitar. In front of her sat a couple of dogs, to whom she was singing. The narrative voice-over advertised the "Joni Mitchell, For the Dogs" album, and a list of songs scrolled up the screen in typical K-Tel fashion. The songs listed had titles like "A White Sportcoat and a Pink Dalmation" and other such nonsense. I was pleased that she's well-known enough in the area for the show to poke fun at her, but at the same time, I was a bit offended. You know, sacrilege and all.
