I don't want to rain on anyone's dance parade, but the thought of joni being piped into a cauldron of drugs and sweat and sex with a million rat-a-tat beats per minute (everything but the girl) is enough to make my head swim. I have no problem moving to Joni's grooves as they are while I clean my apartment or just hang out at home with friends. I don't need those beats over-amped and spelled out for me so I can strip to the waist and dance with my gay "community", most of whom have drugged their brains to the point that they have the human capacity of a toaster-oven. And so, Ed, just keep doing what you're doing, I empathize completely with you. There are gay men who appreciate Joni, and even a few of us who prefer to take her staight, no techno-beat chaser. Welcome to the list. ------------------------------ Date: Fri, 18 Feb 2000 14:08:49 +0000 From: Kate Tarasenko Subject: A Wally moment -- PLEASE READ Wally's friend Jim wants the JMDL to know that Wally's ashes will be scattered tomorrow, Saturday, February 19, 2000 at noon (Pacific Standard Time). This day is also Kilauren Gibb's birthday (Joni's daughter), as well as a full moon. This would be an opportune time of observance for all who wish to participate in a joint remembrance of Wally -- mark a moment of silence, say a prayer, light a candle, or whatever gesture moves you. Thanks to all who've inquired and plan to participate. Jim has also been working on the "BSN" page of the JMHP as well as other things. He's also still accepting mail at . It is, of course, Freddie Nietzsche as she has cited in almost every interview she's done over the past several years. Personally I'd like to hear her talk a bit about someone else at times, but she seems stuck on Freddie. "Nietzsche" is also the name of her favorite cat, who is the subject of the song "Man From Mars". We actually had a pretty interesting thread here awhile back on Nietzsche until a few chased us off the air for being too "highbrow" ;-) Kakki, aiming for "middlebrow" these days ;-D ------------------------------ Date: Fri, 18 Feb 2000 16:28:15 EST From: Dmascall@aol.com Subject: Subject: In The Same Vein...(NJC) On Thu, 17 Feb 2000 mystery_touch@yahoo.com> wrote >Slightly off topic, but with BSN ringing in our ears, >I thought I'd point out another release along the same >lines that I enjoy. I heard Bryan Ferry (a great hero of mine) sing these on Jools Holland and other TV shows in the UK and thought the treatments were great - just played pretty straight with no trace of overkill (a vice on some previous Bryan Ferry recordings, though sometimes successful, like "Carrickfergus" on "The Bride stripped Bare"). I haven't bought the CD as yet (I'm on rations) but I'm glad to hear it's good. Hail the return of the song (as opposed to the production). I'm waiting for the UK edition of BSN to come out here at the end of the month (no special editions here, thank god). I've never been to a rave and have NO interest in Curcuit parties- but what i've heard of various experimental and commerical house/tribal dance music, I can say it's written for the body. It instigates movement. joni's written for the emotion and often played with an uncanny rhythm that runs through my circuit like a heart beat.... like michael y said- why can't dance be physical, emotional and intellectual? i can imagine a large dimly lit space with many sweaty trance-out dancers moving to a deep bass version of coyote.... i'd welcome it! love doug np: bonnie prince billy: i see a darkness ------------------------------ Date: Fri, 18 Feb 2000 13:46:15 -0800 From: Steve Dulson Subject: Dulcimers (NJC) Catherine (in Toronto) writes: >Does anyone know where one could get a decent dulcimer? The date of the Hejira (which is sometimes spelt hijrah, depending on which translation) marks the beginning of the muslim calendar. Muhammad's flight to Medina from Mecca after being chased by Infidels.(and that's nothing to do with Bob Dylan) A person who has gone on the hejira (a journey that every good Muslim should undertake to the Holy City of Mecca) is called a haji or a hajjah, if you're a female. It's simply not very likely that so much skipping would >'concentrate' on BSN, even if the CD's are slightly scratched from being >loose in the packaging. > >--jussi Actually, most people have complained about the scratching on 'a case of you', and i think if you and your dj friend looked at a scratched cd you'd understand why. you wrote >Scratches can cause jumping, especially if they are parallel to the grooves> and that's what happened to most of these. the actual space for the cd is a very flat cylinder, about 1/2 inches deep and 6 inches across. the 'lithos' and the lyric sheets (mine arrived shrink-wrapped and in perfect condition) would help keep a loose cd very close to the well it was supposed to be in. there are only two features in the box that could inflict scratching. the rim around the well is so long, i can't imagine it doing too much damage. the central point, which was supposed to hold the cd in and didn't, is probably what did the damage. my cd looks very scratched but only 'a case of you' skips. and while there are scratches all over, there are very distinctive, circular scratches only at one point, about halfway through the album. it seems clear that in a jostled package, the worst damage was done when the cd was thrown against the rim. the other part of the cd was thrown against the protrusion, and the worst scratches happened at almost the exact same point every time. almost certainly right in the middle of 'a case of you'. for people with more scratched cds, imagine how much the cd would be bashed against those protrusions in a bumpy truck ride. these cds had to put up with more than cds can take. by the way, i own several hundred cds and almost none of them skip. i'm insanely careful with them. you wrote >it's almost always the flawless-looking discs that skip.> and i have to say that this is the opposite of my experience. the few i have that skip always have obvious visual reasons why. i have never experienced 'flawless-looking disc' that skipped. anyway, i'm going to call the reprise number and see if i can send them proof of purchase and avoid sending the damaged cd back. i think that slice of the painting is just beautiful, and with a replacement cd for the set i think i'd put the scratched one in a frame or something. patrick np - audra mcdonald - the man that got away ------------------------------ Date: Fri, 18 Feb 2000 22:30:41 -0500 From: Deb Messling Subject: Re: Viagra, drones, Carol Bayer Sager, (md) - now VG-8 vs other instruments Catherine asked: At 05:55 PM 2/18/00 GMT, you wrote: >> When she >sings "I went so numb on Christmas Day, i couldn't feel my hands or feet", >is that an emotional state, or is some of it literal and figurative? I saw the prototype at LACE. The front and back paintings of Joni at the bar make up the front and back of the CD case. (She makes > it okay to grieve.) This may sound really odd, especially coming from such a > youngster like me, but there is just something about her. Hi Ed! Welcome aboard! As a gay male who first started getting into Joni way back when disco was just beginning I understand this completely. I also remember thinking when I first started listening to her, 'How does she know how I feel???' 'Court & Spark' was my first Joni album and it totally blew me away. Then when I heard 'Woman of Heart & Mind', 'Cold Blue Steel & Sweet Fire', 'A Case of You' and 'Blue' on Miles of Aisles I was a complete convert. I knew I had found something extraordinary. A lot of people didn't understand my obsession and I too experienced that condescension from other gay men who only wanted to hear dance, dance, dance music. But like you I tend to be very bullheaded about what I like & don't like. Joni has rewarded me over & over again for my fidelity to her. Mark in Seattle ------------------------------ Date: Sat, 19 Feb 2000 01:21:55 EST From: Ginamu@aol.com Subject: BSN Arrival I received yesterday a FedX package containing a copy of BSN, from a friend who located it at his local record store (and another one on the way from CDNow, which I will be returning). I am pleased with the condition, overall. Not a scratch or skip. The lithos and lyric cards were bound in plastic and were also in good shape. Like Laura, the outside rim of the box had its paper peeling off in one place. There were two small globs of glue on the outside cover. The packaging could have been so much nicer! A little satin pocket on the box's top to slip the lithos and lyric cards into would have been a good idea. I've played it twice now and it's...mmmm...nice. I like A Case Of You and once again, one can tell that Joni truly loves the song Comes Love. Not sure about the other songs yet. I don't think the new version of BSN is anything to rave about, though I never really loved that song to begin with. I hope she drops the idea of doing a whole album of her old songs with orchestral arrangements. There is nothing like new, original Joni! (IMO) It's hard to say just yet but I doubt this is a CD that I'll be pulling out too awful much. Ensconced in its cumbersome packaging, it will be even less likely. The lithos are...mmmm....nice. Is there perhaps something in the way they were produced that diminishes their quality? The art work on TI seems much nicer. I don't care for the colors in the BSN paintings. The one of Joni tongue-kissing with Don Freed looks like a overexposed photo. It's awful, really. And I hear Joni's getting all riled up at interviewers again. Good grief! (goodbye Charles Schultz).
