Unfortunately the cd is scratched all to hell & back again. The skips started about a minute into 'Comes Love'. I really hope CDNow will consider just replacing the cd itself. I really like the box a lot and want to keep it. I have to confess, I've also had a tape of BSN for about a week now. Others have commented and I'm pretty much in agreement with them. At first I thought the orchestrations were a little overbearing but the more I listen, the more right they sound. Also, it's hard for me to listen to anybody sing something that I'm used to hearing Billie sing but I'm gradually getting over that. Joni's versions very much stand on their own. She's not copying Billie or anybody else. The first time I heard 'A Case of You' the tears started to flow and they kept coming at various other places. I'm also really enjoying the songs I wasn't familiar with, especially 'At Last' &'I Wish I Were In Love Again'. I really like Wayne Shorter's contributions & am wondering why Patrick has reservations about them. All in all this is a ravishingly gorgeous record. Thank you, Joni! On the new disc - available in a special limited edition featuring her artwork, and set for regular release next month - she sings classic pop songs, including a couple of her own, backed by a big orchestra featuring strings & horns. Her choice of material is perfect, her interpretation of the songs moving and challenging, and her voice more subtle & controlled than ever. The way she revisits her own songs is fascinating. 'A Case of You,' a statement of independence & bravado when she wrote it as a young woman 30 years ago, has been recast as melancholy by an older, wiser Mitchell. However, she expresses just as much doubt about her understanding of love in 'Both Sides Now,' which closes the 12-song album, as she did in the 70s. Never known for doing covers, she shows impressive skills of interpretation with such chestnuts as 'At Last' in which she expresses quiet joy, backed by a tinkling piano and lush strings; 'Stormy Weather' which makes you forget Lena Horne's definitive version, at least for a while; and the wonderfully slinky 'Comes Love' which reveals its every nuance and all its sly humor in her noir-ish presentation. 'You've Changed' and 'Answer Me, My Love' both are powerfully moving, with her sensitive voice couched in big, masterful productions, 'Don't Go To Strangers' has a stylish, swing-influenced sheen. 'Don't Worry 'Bout Me' has a bluesy edge, while 'I Wish I Were In Love Again,' with its brilliant lyrics by Lorenz Hart, is delightful. (there is also a photo, the smiling Joni in beret photo that was on the ads for the Dylan/Morrison tour with the caption: 'Joni Mitchell comes late to the big-band jazz fad, but her new versions of classic pop songs more than make up for lost time.') ------------------------------ Date: Fri, 11 Feb 2000 16:58:13 +1300 From: "Helen M. Considering the number of scratched CD's being sent around the world, you'd think these companies would use a little common sense, and just put the CD into a jewel case before shipping it. Even if it doesn't fit inside the presentation box, the cost of the jewel case would be considerably less than paying double shipping! My order from CDNow has been shipped, and considering the distance it has to travel, I'm not holding out much hope for an unscratched copy. And the cost (to to mention hassle) of sending it back to the US will probably mean I just wait until March to buy the "budget" version, instead of trying to get a replacement. YEEE-HAAWWWW!!!! Of course, I am sure ANOTHER Cure album, along with a new Kate Bush album, Peter Gabriel album, Lindsey Buckingham album, Stevie Nicks album, and the Celine Dion "I've just had my baby with my Grandfather/Husband" album will all be released before my BSN arrives... GREAT first impression review SC Bob! Those are always my favorite. I think BSN*LE is a much-needed lesson in the proper handling of a CD. My copy seemed to be packed well with the lithos, lyrics & credits acting as a cushion. At first I was perplexed by the little divot to release the CD but I swear my next thought was "Wow, this is the right way to handle a CD." It forces you to pick it up without touching the surface. I've received many scratched CD's in jewel cases via snailmail over the years. The claws on the holder has always been a problem. Perhaps a release button would work better....
