I was going to stay out of it (publicly anyway) because I've already made my feelings on this particular issue known. Of the emails I got privately, most, with one exception, didn't like getting the plugs. The one who did complain about my email appreciated Peter's posts but actually objected more to the "tone" I used which was, I'll admit it, sarcastic. However, IMO, there's a difference between expressing opinions on various topics - whether it's a new artist or your opinions on the American primaries (as a Canadian, I do not, nor will I EVER understand that, and I don't think I want to either! what the heck is THAT all about and does it really go on forever, or does it just seem like it?) and plugs of the week. None of us stand to make any money from what we're saying and we're not trying to sell anything to anyone. I enjoying hearing Bob's views on things, for example, because I'm reasonably certain he does it because he genuinely loves the music, has no vested interest in it, and doesn't get commission for it (don't let me down Bob! if I find out you're actually working for Time-Warner-EMI-AOL-Godzilla, I'll be reeeeaaaaall disappointed.) Rick is a blues musician in Toronto but we grew up in Detroit. He remembered seeing Joni and Chuck perform here at the Chess Mate, back in the 1960s. He told a tale that I thought you guys might enjoy. As he remembers it, what made their act so fascinating was how Joni came on to join Chuck: Chuck would already be on stage singing a song (Rick couldn't remember if it was a Joni original or something else). Out from the very back of the audience, came a gentle harmony and then Joni slowly walked through the audience, guitar in hand, singing along with Chuck and finding her way up the stage. Unfortunatly, recordings of the tour are only available on bootlegs, and the one I have has very, very poor sound quality. (Wish I could find a good one.) Anybody know other places this band played during that period? For the most part I don't like them all that much, I think they sound as dated as can be now, but I'm still curious. I was in seminary then, is I was poor as a church mouse (ouch, that was bad... but I couldn't resist...) It was because of MOA that I moved heaven and earth to be in Chicago to see Joni in 1998... I wanted to experience what I had heard, and MOA was as close to live Joni as I got prior to that, so MOA is very special in my life. Sometimes I still, when a friend is interested, play a song off of a pre MOA album, play the MOA version, an S&L version if available, and then the PWWAM version, and say, look Joni keeps making these songs new, she is alive and vibrant and growing as an artist, not doing the same old things the same old ways over and over again, such as the Stones and other dinosaur nostalgia acts playing old songs by rote the same way they played them 30 years ago. I liked LA Express. It was cool in its time and glad she did it, and glad she didn't just always with them either. I think we have a bunch of fussy in-laws in the JMDL, disapproving of LA Express, or disapproving of Larry Klien, or whoever she plays with. Joni is a big girl now. She can play with whomever she wants. Each musical influence on her has enriched her and her music because Joni is so open to the varieties of life. Maybe all the various experiences have enriched the music we love so much... And remember on MOA, where Joni says, no one ever asked Van Gogh to paint Starry Starry Night again so why should she have to do the same song the same way over and over again? Right on, Joni! Sue, this post gave me shivers. Get some paints & brushes and shake off that old garbage! You are a creative person & you should never let anyone stifle those urges! This line from 'A Case of You' really hit me when I first heard it, too. And to tie in with the 'live vs studio recordings' thread, I first heard it on 'Miles of Aisles'. I only had 'Court & Spark' and maybe 'LOTC' & 'Clouds' when I got 'MOA' from my folks for Christmas. Side 2 of the 2 record set became almost like some kind of liturgy for me. This side had the following songs: Cactus Tree Cold Blue Steel & Sweet Fire Woman of Heart & Mind A Case of You Blue Five of the most gut-wrenching songs that I can think of. And all from Joni albums I had yet to own at the time. It was a big motivation to get me to buy the rest of those records. I still love those live versions the best, though. And the songs from 'Blue' were really such an accurate decription of where my head was at in those days. The lyric Sue quoted was especially apt along with this one: Well there's so many sinkin' now You gotta keep thinkin' You can make it through these waves Acid booze & ass Needles guns & grass Lots o laughs Lots o laughs Everybody's sayin That Hell's the hippest way to go Well I don't think so But I'm gonna take a look around it though Leave out the needles & guns & it's a pretty clear picture of how I felt when I was in my early 20's. 'Miles of Aisles' is very special to me. Though quite old, he still was able to defeat any challenger. His reputation extended far and wide throughout the land and many students gathered to study under him. One day an infamous young warrior arrived at the village. He was determined to be the first man to defeat the great master. Along with his strength, he had an uncanny ability to spot and exploit any weakness in an opponent. He would wait for his opponent to make the first move, thus revealing a weakness, and then would strike with merciless force and lightning speed. No one had ever lasted with him in a match beyond the first move. Much against the advice of his concerned students, the old master gladly accepted the young warrior's challenge. As the two squared off for battle, the young warrior began to hurl insults at the old master. He threw dirt and spit in his face. For hours he verbally assaulted him with every curse and insult known to mankind. But the old warrior merely stood there motionless and calm. Finally, the young warrior exhausted himself. Knowing he was defeated, he left feeling shamed. Somewhat disappointed that he did not fight the insolent youth, the students gathered around the old master and questioned him. "How could you endure such an indignity? How did you drive him away?" "If someone comes to give you a gift and you do not receive it," the master replied, "to whom does the gift belong?"
