Wow, wow, wow! It is absolutely fantastic and so well done. This is the best book on Joni that I've seen. I was also so surprised and happy to see a prominent nod given to Wally, Les and all of us in the Acknowledgments page! Brilliant choice of articles included and there are new photos that I've never seen before. Thank you Stacy for such a beautiful book! I'm glad you ended up having such a wonderful and "picturesque" night ;-) - wish I could have been there! Congrats on your studio recording, too! Let us know when the CD is released! Love, Kakki ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 24 Jan 2000 20:21:22 +0000 From: Kate Tarasenko Subject: NJC: Plug of the week I can't believe how often this rag comes up: I encourage you listers who are bothered by coupons, Peter's Plugs of the Week, or any other type of NJC, to SCROLL AND DELETE, or get thee to the JC-only list. I, for one, find a lot of value in a lot of the NJC, and as long as it's labeled as such, I can't figure out why anyone has a problem with it. I don't care what Peter's motives are for posting his plugs because I've been turned on to a lot of new music BECAUSE of his posts. You want to boot Peter's posts off to a different list, and what's next? Once you start limiting the content of NJC posts, we'll eventually get whittled down to only JC, and the JMDL will become something completely different. Just remember to label your posts, people, and keep your paws off my NJC. But I do think it's great that they are getting together after all these years and are still standing, much less rocking. I'm seeing them here on Feb. 12th and can't wait. There's word that they will be doing some old Byrds, Buffalo Springfield and even Hollies hits in addition to their many CSN, CSNY and new songs. I'll be looking for their best girl in the audience ;-) A few comments: > 2. Crosby, despite all of his ordeals, still writes great stuff and sings it > beautifully. He sure does. Some, including me, think he's singing better than ever, which is rather miraculous and the songs he has composed for his group CPR are outstanding. > 4. Graham Nash sounds great, but lordy his songs are so banal that even REO > Speedwagon wouldn't record 'em. Somebody get him a thesaurus - STAT! I adore Graham but never thought songwriting was his strong suit. After several listens to the new album, I had to give him the prize for best of voice, though. And the two songs he does, sappy as they may be, are unavoidably my faves on the album. They're just so darn pretty! ;-) There's been a small brouhaha over on the CSNY list lately because of some of the merchandising items being offered on one website. In addition to coffee cups, posters and decals, they are also offering "CSNY Rolling Papers" and, ahem, "Teach Your Children Well Condoms." My first reaction was to turn up my nose but once my sense of humor kicked in, I thought it was pretty funny. God only knows what could have been so important that it was worth yelling about for an hour, but Joni definately noticed and shot them a few cold looks. Didn't say a word to them, but if looks could kill... Walter ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 25 Jan 2000 14:43:14 +1100 From: "Alan Lorimer" Subject: Re: CSN&Y live on VH-1 NJC >2. I recently received MOA from CDNow. The album has been digitally remastered, and is now a HDCD for those who have got the players. Just a few comments on some tracks on this album: "A Case Of You" It's almost as though this song has matured like a good wine! Joni noticeably reduces the tempo of this song, her voice has matured and has more depth than when she recorded the original. The live version on MOA was the version that actually turned me on to this song! "Cold Blue Steel And Sweet Fire" Yet again Joni reduces the tempo from the original and breathes new life into a song. "Blue" This is about the only older track on the album that Joni *doesn't* change the tempo on. This, to me, comes to life far more than the version on my (standard) 'Blue' CD. Although after listening to the first two tracks on MOA, namely "You Turn Me On I'm A Radio", and "Big Yellow Taxi", you could be forgiven for thinking that this is a Country and Western album, most of the tracks on the album are either just Joni accompanying herself on Guitar or Joni accompanying herself on the Piano. She sounds relaxed, and takes her time over each track. For those of us who have never heard Joni live, listening to her retuning her guitar between tracks is a relevation. You may not like some, or even most, of the tracks on the album, but to listening to Joni reinterpreting her own work and thinking "Yes, this is how it really should sound" makes it worthwhile. What's the point of a live album if it just sounds like a studio album with background noise? Joni's music isn't just 'formula' music, it's open to interpretation. When Joni reinterprets a song, often you get insight into that song. ps: There's been some great discussion on this ongoing thread though :-) Alan Lorimer Hawley Beach Tasmania ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 24 Jan 2000 22:01:42 -0600 From: Michael Paz Subject: Re: If it weren't for Wally ... I know one of the critisisems of Joni Mitchell's songs is that they are too self absorbed, narcissistic, but I really don't believe that is even 1% true.My theory is that the more detailed and personal a work of art is the more universal it is at the same time.By Joni talking about her own highly personal, individual, feelings she is inviting the listener to identify with her and apply her songs to their lives, and in that sense she is far from narcissistic. Her songs help many more people then songs by people who write vague, abstract lyrics about "outside" stuff that noone can apply to their own lives. ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 24 Jan 2000 23:21:16 -0600 From: Michael Paz Subject: Boxers or Briefs (NJC) Hey Bob- Pretty scathing review of Looking Forward!
