Kakki ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 24 Jan 2000 21:24:24 +1100 From: "Alan Lorimer" Subject: Plug Of The Week #3 (NJC) - take 2 Peter, I would like to suggest that you consider the alternative of using a web page in place of your current 'Plug of the Week'. I have come up with this alternative for the following reasons: 1. Your plugs of the week are really just advertising (or promotion, call it what you will). Item #6 on my copy of "List Ettiquette" says that we should 'Post from within the ballpark' even for NJC messages. 2. On the other hand many members are interested to find 'new' artists, especially on the occasions that you plug the music of list members :-) 3. For the members who do want to read your music reviews, the plain text format of the discusson list is not really suitable. The text alone, I'm afraid, isn't enough to make me consider listening to a new artist. On the basis of this, I quickly prepared the following 'rough and ready' webpage, used the text from your posting and an image from the web. http://jonimitchell.freeservers.com/peterh.htm Think of the benefits! 1. Your messages will be shorter and will not be seen to be taking advantage of the list. 2. More importantly, the HTML format of a web page will allow them to have some impact! I could hardly be bothered to read the text of your 'Plug of the week', but with the addition of an image and a little colour, I suddenly want to know more! 3. Just by adding an index page, people could go to your site and see any of your 'Plugs Of The Week' going back to when you started the site. There are plenty of "free" websites available. For a nominal fee they will remove their advertising. Note that I have done the same thing with my "Coupon Codes" posts to not only stop annoying people who aren't interested in them, no complaints to date though :-) but mainly to make them more useful. Searching through emails to try and find stuff is a pain in the bum. Clicking on a link to a web site is a real no brainer. Think about it :-) Alan Lorimer Hawley Beach Tasmania ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 24 Jan 2000 07:44:11 EST From: Kleronomos@aol.com Subject: no MSG <> Having seen her with Dylan at MSG, I share your sentiments (I also saw her long ago at a very small theater in Southern California). Billie did record 'Stormy Weather' on the Verve label in 1952. Bob is right, however, this is Lena Horne's signature song. She sang it in the film 'Stormy Weather' in the 40's. In her stage show 'The Lady and Her Music' which she did sometime in the 80's Lena sang 'Stormy Weather' in the first act in the somewhat restrained, 40's big band singer style she used in the movie. At the climax of the show, she sings it again, introducing it by saying that she is still finding things to think about when she sings it and that it has taken a lot of years for her to grow into it. She then launches into a scorching version of the song that pulls out all the stops. (Kakki, you have this version on the b-side of your Sarah Vaughan tape.) Great stuff! The thing I hated most about live albums is the background noise - the clapping, the cheering, the idiots who yell something from the audience, like the jerk (OK, which one of you was it? I bet you're on this list somewhere, aren't you?) who yelled: "Joni, you're better than Mick Jagger, Richard Nixon and [someone else that didn't fit] rolled into one!" in MOA. At least Joni laughed. I get really irritated with people who start clapping and cheering when a song starts and they recognize it. Likewise people who start applauding before the song is over. Sheesh. Show some respect. (OK, so it's exciting when you're all hyped up to see your favourite singer live, and the artists know it's going to happen, so they play a longer-than-normal intro, but it still bugs me!) I just got MOA and S&L recently. I had previously avoided buying them because of the I-don't-like-live-albums reason. AND, guess what? I like them - I actually like it when Joni does a different version of one her songs. IMO, she recreates them in a way that is much more different and interesting than any other artist I can think of. Anyway, if a number of years have gone by since a song was first recorded and then the artist re-does it, they can often create something completely different, unique and very good, which offers up a whole new perspective on things. Think of Eric Clapton's 2 versions of "Layla" - would you necessarily recognize it as the same song? At this point, having listened to both MOA and S&L and having completely enjoyed both of them, I'd be inclined NOW to say that I'd prefer to hear a live album where the artist DOES change the song, rather than hearing them attempt to re-create their original version (and sometimes fail) - it's kind of a bonus. I have always sought out the live recordings of artists whose work I enjoy and indeed it was MOA, given to me on a rather ropey tape, that turnrd me on to Joan all those very many years ago. As a kid without external means of financing the purchase of records, I was listening to MOA for quite a while before buying the original recordings (prefering at the time to go straight to THOSL and H which came out at this time). I completely fell in love with the live recordings on MOA as it felt like she was playing to me. There is this sense of her proximity to me when I listened to those songs. A feeling that is absent from the studio recordings in my experience. Although, in fairness, I haven't really given the original album sources a lot of listening so that may be unfair if not altogether bollocks :-) But what I really get from Live recordings is a measure of how the songs stand up on their own without the sprinkling of fairy dust that tends to inform those produced in the studio. (See DED for glaring example) I heard 'Facelift' on a live recording sent by a friend from Indonesia before the album release and completely adore that version - Joni and the guitar. I have taken to heart the exasperated remark she made on MOA about 'a painter does a painting' etc. and felt, in reply, that so much more can be wrought from re-working a subject bringing more to the listener and hopefully to the artist. I mean, after all, what is happening now when she re-does Both Sides Now and Case of You. She is revisiting songs dear to all our hearts. Okay, so they're not live but I think it is the same principle at work. BTW....desparately worried about Wally. I have been thinking about him all day. This dude had them on their feet. Having been into the 70s Dylan song about the same, I have paid mild attention to the Hurricane story since the 1970s. My intrigue came about from an interview JM did that was reprinted in the Companion, pg. 148, I believe. In it, she said she was touring with Dylan and Baez in 1975 about the time of HOSL. I think it was a tour benefiting Hurricane's legal defense. JM said she spoke to Hurricane on the telephone several times, but felt (in paraphrase) he was an opportunist charlatan. JM said she was the only one who felt that way. I wish I could quote the section verbatim, but don't have the book at work. At any rate, it's all good, we all have our opinions about legal matters such as this. {Nod to OJ.} In that same paragraph, she said he was freed from prison and the next day battered a woman. I re-read it again this AM over coffee and reflected on Denzel's statement (in his best actor acceptance speech) that Hurricane is Love and God is Love. What gives, my friends? Kind of like an advance notice of appreciation given to the artist...a confirmation..."we love this song!" I enjoy being part of a respectful and informed audience. Jazz audiences have this down pretty good, giving polite applause to the instrumentalist at the conclusion of the solo, while the song itself continues...it's one of my favorite parts of a live performance, especially when the soloist nods a head or gives a grin or a wink at the sound of the applause, in effect returning thanks to the audience for being there. On the flip side, I don't like being in the audience of a classical music performance when people begin applauding between the movements, rather than at the conclusion, especially when efforts are made via the program or in the media reminding the audience to refrain during these times...I guess some are just conditioned to automatically begin clapping as soon as there's silence from the stage...which begs the question: is the applause a heartfelt gesture by the audience to show respect and appreciation or is it a Pavlovian response? I pray with all that I am, with all that I deem and doom myself to be, that I find what I quest for and know when it manifests. For soon, the dragon within me shall awaken fully and answer Answer the distant call of the ancients drum as they beckon To follow and seek to go within them, yet fluid in it's ebb and flows. My spirit now awakens my soul, calling to me to take a leap of faith into the vastness that is tomorrow, and the love and potential that is hope Hope that you hold onto for eternity. I recall someone recently said that the "full" CD will also finally be released this year. Each artist did around 2-3 songs at the concert but the AT&T special only includes one selection from each. Joni also performed Trouble Man and a charming duet with Bjork "What Is This Thing Called Love?" at the show and I would love to have a copy of the "full" version at some point. If you try for it on eBay it helps to search on some of the other artists' names such as Bjork, Shawn Colvin, Stevie Nicks, Gewn Stefani, etc. in addition to Joni. Or sad? (NJC) I've enjoyed this thread, and agree with whomever it was who said that the songs they found the most DEPRESSING are mindless chart drivel. I differentiate between those songs and songs that are sad, or melancholy, or depict tragic incidents or poignant affairs. Music of beauty hardly ever actually brings me down, because its beauty itself has a redemptive power. The blues, on the other hand, is cathartic to me, and evokes empathy and admiration for the human spirit. So, having said that, what do I find really depressing and hard to listen to?? Step forward Lou Reed, whose Berlin album is heavy going all the way through, with "The Kids" getting my vote for wrist-slitter of the century. Well, looks like I was took! Unfortunately, nothing sounded as good as that tune. I listened to it three times, and reached the following conclusions: 1. As much as I love Neil Young, he shouldn't waste any more time with CSN...his songs here are fine, but sound like throwaways from his own projects, which are a whole lot better. He's grown SO much since those early days, while the other three have slipped... 2. Crosby, despite all of his ordeals, still writes great stuff and sings it beautifully. 3. Stills plays a mean guitar but lordy his voice is shot! His range must be about three notes...if you don't believe me, listen to Suite: Judy Blue Eyes or Woodstock and then listen to "No Tears Left"...see what I mean?! 4. Graham Nash sounds great, but lordy his songs are so banal that even REO Speedwagon wouldn't record 'em. Somebody get him a thesaurus - STAT! 5. Even when the song is a hollow shell, when the voices unite (even Stills), the harmony is blissful...and I do give the boys credit for a much better effort than the dreaded "American Dream"! 6. Every time I see Stills and Nash side by side, I'm reminded of the old rhyme, "Fatty & Skinny were laying in bed, Fatty rolled over & Skinny was dead"...don't know why, I just do. The good news from my trip to the record store was the Magnolia Soundtrack, AniDiFranco's "To The Teeth", which is REALLY excellent, and the equally excellent "The Soft Bulletin" by The Flaming Lips! To Wally and friends of the JMDL - This last year has been a very different one for me, one in which my love for Joni, music and my guitar has gone into full bloom as a result of all the interactions I have had with the fine folks of this internet group. I want to thank Wally for something which has been pivotal in my life. Because of JMDL, I found the excellent tablature's for Joni's songs supplied by our painstaking members, tablatures from which I learned how to play guitar and which enabled me to find my own tunings and come up with my own songs. With the urgings of Kakki, Michael Paz and Steve Dulson, all new friends from the JMDL, I finally got up the nerve and sang at the open mike of the Kibbitz Room, next to Cantors, here in LA. It’s something I have put off for close to a year. My sign-up was very late on the list, so I had a lot of time to drink and listen to the other acts. The first thing I did was buy drinks for two hefty, self-described bar flies named Sue and Gina. Gina, from Arkansas, told me she was descended from a Cherokee Princess. I cannot tell you how many times I have heard that from people in bars. None the less, Gina and I sang along with the jukebox after I put on "Goin' To California" by Led Zep before the show started. There was no Joni on the juke, but I did find Paul Desmond's sax version of "Song to a Seagull" and played "Fountain of Sorrow" by Jackson Browne as well. I also bought a drink for a beautiful young white guy who went on and sang what was a good imitation of Tom Waits. He was too young, white and handsome to sing the blues. Anyway, the three of them kept buying drinks for me, so whatever nervousness I had was evaporated when I finally went up. I swelled with confidence. Then I started playing. I couldn’t find my chords, fucked up all my lyrics. I have a new guitar with a different strap that keeps slipping, and about 2/3ds of the way through, my guitar slipped away. People thought the song was over, applauded, and went back to their conversations. “Okay, I fucked up” I thought to myself, and started the second song. That went well -- I think -- but who knows, since my brain was stewing in Jagermeister. But afterwards, I was ecstatic - I had finally done it! Sue looked at me with new eyes, proclaimed me a romantic and asked me to dance as a rock ‘n’ roll band came up. Then two young and handsome Swedish hippies came on the floor and started dancing with each other. I am sure they were straight, but they invited me to their table for a drink. After the bar closed, I invited them, two other Swedes, and two English girls to my place. We had a jam session, and they sang Simon and Garfunkel and Bob Dylan songs for me in Swedish accents: “Und valked oaf to look fur Amerikah.” One of the English girls saw my pictures of Joni and asked who she was. When I told her she asked, "So you are a bit hung up on her, I would assume." "Well, yes," I said. Anyway, it was a great evening and not typical of the kinds of nights I usually have. Now I am recording my songs with a British producer and writing them out reminds me of stories Joni would tell about the almost impossible task of transcribing her songs. Some of my chords when written down were like C min 7 add D#. But I absolutely love recording my music, and am fulfilling a dream, regardless of whether I can ever make any money at it. So many people on this list have been so helpful in answering all my questions, giving advice, or even lending me their equipment. So thanks, Wally. Peace, love and fulfillment of dreams to all of you. - - Clark np: TLC Fan Mail ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 24 Jan 2000 17:52:12 -0800 From: "Mark or Travis" Subject: Re: Applause Applause NJC ...which begs the question: is the applause a > heartfelt gesture by the audience to show respect and appreciation or is it > a Pavlovian response?
