So the first site I ever visited was your extraordinary labor of love. You started a community that has grown to become a network of friends: you have brought so many people together and enriched our lives immeasurably. You will be in my thoughts and in my heart for the rest of my life. With love, Roberto "And the unwatched soul soars into the magic circle of the night, to live a thousand times more intensely" (H. I'll only be posting coupons on this site that can be used by all JMDL members, not just those living the United States and Canada. Last year I did some assignments at University (I'm doing a Graduate Diploma in Computing), where I had to develop Web pages which used JavaScript, and incorporated CGIs etc. (horrible stuff!), and I've copied some of these pages across to a free Web Service (you get advertising forced on you). I've removed a lot of the 'assignment material' and instead added links to the Joni Mitchell sites etc. So if you want to check out my list of coupons, you can go to: http://www.jonimitchell.freeservers.com/ Note: I know a lot of people have wondered if you can link the CDNow coupons to Wally and Les's sites. I tried to do that for about three hours and go no where :-( :-( :-(. P.S. I must thank Laura for posting coupons on the list to start with. If only I'd known about coupons when I first got on the net 12 months ago! And I for one can't wait to take a bite of the upcoming album arriving just in time to be a Valentine's box of chocolates. Wishing that Joni will tour again soon. I hope she/they will pick smaller venues to debut these new songs. I am sure we'd all love to see her at a small jazz club in Greenwich Village or Paris (perhaps doing some Edith Piaf covers, too? ;-) and if that isn't possible, how about medium sized venues? Last year it was my privilege to go to two of Natalie Merchant's concerts. One at the Palace in New Haven, the other her last show of that tour at the Neil Simon on Broadway (which BTW was recorded and released recently). Natalie even mentioned Joni at the New Haven concert and when she said that, I thought, this is where Joni should be. The sound was wonderful no matter where you sat in the house, and even in the back rows, Natalie was still a wild woman shaman, not a speck at 40,000 feet. Truthfully if Joni held a concert at Chernobyl, I'd probably go. And believe me I am well aware of the economics of the whole thing and I don't begrudge our Joan for wanting to make some money. But these songs deserve intimate settings, not the sacrilegious atmosphere of a pit like Madison Square Garden. Give me my Joni sweet, but hold the MSG! Wishing everyone a "Sunny Sunday," - -Brian ;-) PS Our own JMDL chanteuse, Kay, playing her own original music and a Joni cover or two at the Orange Bear 47 Murray Street (btw Church & West Broadway) NYC on Friday 1/28, at 7:00 p.m. ------------------------------ Date: Sun, 23 Jan 2000 11:03:08 EST From: SCJoniGuy@aol.com Subject: Re: MJC: Size does matter In a message dated 1/23/00 9:45:26 AM US Central Standard Time, Chilihead2@aol.com writes: << Seems "romantics make the same fate someday," they end up creating an album of torch songs and standards.>> I read where Bryan Ferry has released a Standards record...anyone have it yet? I saw Bonnie Raitt last year at our Peace Center which holds about 4,500. It has state of the art acoustics, and would be a wonderful venue for Joni. If Bonnie can make it work, Joni should be able to as well. And she has said again and again that she would PREFER to play in a small atmosphere again. My REAL fantasy is that she would pop in to The Handlebar unannounced and do a show! :~) That club is about the size of Ashara's backyard... (and who doesn't?) i'm not a shakespeare expert- but i do know this was an early/formative play that's now lost favor in contemp Willy the shake repetoires. it's relentless in it's portrayal of revenge and counter-revenge. the acting all around is pretty damn good- especially Jessica lang as Tamora, the Goth Queen. Cinematically it's also pretty stunning- very stage/tableaux-like, which i guess is appropriate to allow the story to unfold primarily through dialogue, with a real gift for mood, space and choreography to bolster the drama. reminded me of a peter greenaway film. the action of the film- although heavy-handed at times- moves forward at a constant drive- but not at the expense of the dialogue. No flashy, truncated, speedy, cut, cut, cut, cut of most action movies that leave you dizzy and unsatisfied. oh- it viciously funny at times. so my best review is that i left with my heart pounding and my imagination thoroughly racing- my personal marker that i've seen something of impact and merit. doug ------------------------------ Date: Sun, 23 Jan 2000 13:10:14 EST From: SMEBD@aol.com Subject: Re: Wally's Health In a message dated 1/21/2000 5:46:58 PM Eastern Standard Time, catman@ethericcats.demon.co.uk writes: << The bit that angered me: the fucking(scuse my french)insurance people!!! Of course by the time an appeal went thru, this man was going to be dead and the insurance company knew it. She sings Joni's "Help Me." The review says "When Wynonna takes an ill-advised shot at covering folk icon Joni Mitchell's signature song 'Help Me,' it is without Mitchell's punctilious delicacy. First off, I always forget that most people think of Joni as a folk icon and secondly I didn't know "Help Me" was Joni's signature song. (granted it did get a lot of radio play) I happen to like Wynonna and have 3 of her CD's. I find it surprising that she picked "Help Me" as the Joni song to put on her new album. Her voice is kinda deep and I just can't picture her singing this song. I went to CDNow to listen to the clip, but my Real Player wasn't functioning properly so I'll try again later. It's a reissue which includes J-cards from the original tree. Tape Tree #3 starts with group of live performances from a radio station's tape archive. The quality of the recordings vary wildly but she tells many stories. You will hear her skill as a storyteller- that is for sure. The interviews were between 1966 and 1968, originally broadcast in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, USA. (Joni's first album, "Song To A Seagull" was released in 1968.) It also includes a live performance at a nightclub called the 2nd Fret, also in Philadelphia, during October 1967. This was at the end of the Summer Of Love if I recall. She was sure of herself and did not have any cocaine anger, ooops. I mean, she is an accomplished live performer, calmly telling her audience about the story behind some songs. To read more about this period, go to: http://www.jonimitchell.com/joni2.html The third tape has 2 discussions with Roberta Joan (Joni) Anderson Mitchell. The first interview took place in 1988, to announce the (then) new album called "Chalk Mark In A Rainstorm". To read more on this era, go to: http://www.jonimitchell.com/Experimental.html In 1995, the interviewer was Todd Rungren. (Have you ever heard "Hello It's Me"? It's the same guy.)
