Or that her and her friends get together to watch it every Wed Night. But what I do find interesting is that her CD of choice for listening at extremely high volume for the last few days has been DED. ;-) Personally, I'm thrilled to have the chance to hear one of the new songs without the static that's on the interview tape. CATMAN. 2) Literally and/or figuratively, what does she mean by "false alarm" in "Amelia"? ORIGINALLY, "BLACK CROW" WAS SUPPOSED TO BE AIRED ON THE BRADY BUNCH EPISODE FEATURING JAN'S FIRST KISS. BUT IT WAS CUT AT THE LAST MINUTE, SO JONI DUBBED IN THE VERSE IN RETALIATION. 3) Literally and/or figuratively, what is "Blue" about? CATMAN AGAIN. MOST OF JONI'S SONGS ARE ABOUT HIM, ACTUALLY. 4) Literally and/or figuratively, who is "The Dawntreader"? THAT WOULD BE DON ROWE. (Sorry, everyone, this sarcasm will pass. The species will go on, and you are more than your job, more than your kids. If you want to be remembered after you die, you don't need to have kids. Make friends. Write a book or a song. Create a sculpture or a garden. Be the class clown. Leave an endowment or build a hospital wing if you've got that kind of money. There are so many things to do. Having kids (or not) is just one. But don't ever fool yourself into thinking you can make them into the you-that-could-have-been. >> Wise words indeed, Catherine. I have doubts about the huge amounts of money that are poured into fertility care. But then, again, I would say that wouldn't I? I'm a single man in his mid thirties, so there is no biological clock ticking, society-imposed or otherwise; I would dearly love to have kids one day, and I think I probably will. And if I or my (putative) partner turned out to be infertile, would I change my mind? How could I know? The ever-readable and spot on Kakki added: << One thing I have not seen addressed yet on either list is the one thing that bothered me about this arrangement - the report that Crosby does not intend to parent these children in any way. Not to take anything away from Melissa and Julie, but this is the one thing that seems "artificial" to me. Now that's it's out in the open and acknowledged, why wouldn't all concerned want the biological father to be involved in these childrens' lives in some way. >> I would like to add something about the question of fathers. I've been reading a very fine book by Steve Biddulph called Manhood (strongly influenced by Robert Bly's Iron John), which looks at all aspects of being a man today: upbringing, relationships, sex, fatherhood, friendship, ageing, etc etc. Biddulph is a liberal in the best sense of the word, and I was therefore interested to read his angle on why it is so important for children to have two parents rather than one, and why it makes a difference if they are a man and a woman; and if it is a single parent family or a same-sex couple, why it is crucial that there are close family or friends of the opposite sex. We all learn from our upbringing. How we are raised has the major influence on how we learn to be, and the parents (or parent) are (or is) obviously the primary influence. Whatever way you cut it, male energy and female energy are different, without wanting to go into gender sterotyping. In an ideal world - ie one very different to the one we live in - every child would have two loving and responsible parents, and a community of family and friends of all ages and both sexes. OK, so much for the pipe dream. Dealing more with the actual picture, certainly in the western world I know and which most of the people on the list will know best, that is often not the case. There are many, many single parent families, mostly mothers. One of the points Biddulph makes in his book is that no matter how good, loving, supportive and responsible a mother is, she cannot compensate for the lack of good male energy in the child's life. The reverse applies to a single father. What is lacking is, for want of a less hackneyed and loaded term, a male role model. Apart from general parental TLC, boys need male role models, and girls need female ones. Why does this affect boys more than girls? Well, apart from the obvious fact that most single parents are women, it is also true that the vast majority of child minders/nannies are women, as well as the majority of nursery and primary school teachers. Girls are unlikely to lack a wide variety of female role models. For these self same reasons, there is a huge gap for boys. If they don't have a father, whether this is literally true or merely functionally so - ie a father who has left, or is never there when the child is awake because he works long hours, this is simply not a good thing. While it is true that women are the primary carers at the start of a child's life (until men acquire the ability to suckle their young - Arnold Schwarzenegger exempted, obviously) it seems to have become a commonplace in our society that women are the ONLY parents a child needs. And yet it is only very recently in western society that men have taken such a back seat in raising children. Biddulph and Bly both put the spotlight on the industrial revolution, which is the point at which fathers effectively vanished from everyday family life. They were working in factories all day, and when they got home the kids were in bed, so they hardly saw them. Voila, the fate of men today. I won't go on any more, but read either of those two books for a good picture of what has happened to modern western man, and why it matters. Enough already; Frasier's about to start. A man who wishes to be a nurdery nurse or a junior school teacher or anything else to do with young children is considered to be odd if not a budding pedophile. As for needing male role models and female ones, well I find that whole thing confusing. What exactly does it mean? What is it supposed to achieve? I had a very violent father and a mother who was just as mean. the model they gave me was to act the way others thought you should, hide the truth from everyone, to be dishonest, selfish, and cruel, and to abuse others for your own ends. They were my role models. I am not like them. I didn't look up to them. I knew young I didn't want to be like them. Whilst i know from personal experience that an unhealthy upbringing can lead to all sorts of problems as an adult, I fail to see what difference it makes whether or not one has good male role models(I can think of no males I liked or felt comfortable with when i was growing up) or good female role models( I had a few of them-women who were kind and safe). I don't think having a different male model in my life would have made me particulalry different in my essentials. I was surrounded(being an army child) by masculine male models yet still had strong 'feminine' qualities. (I do not mean anything to with sexuality here). ------------------------------ Date: Fri, 14 Jan 2000 18:04:32 -0800 From: howard Subject: Any mo' news on JM in NOLA? A friend (no idea who) and I were somewhere with Joni, and she had a new book out. Kind of a large "coffee-table" type book, about 30x40 cm in size. Anyway, I asked her if she would please sign it, and she took it over to a corner of the room. I tried to see what (and on what page) she was writing, but she wouldn't let me look. She finally handed the book back, saying "I know you're a big fan, so I thought you deserved something special". I opened the book, flicked through until I saw something sketched. She'd used a page with a photo on half of it, and on the other half, had sketched a kind of landscape scene (in black marker), quite reminiscent of the CAS album cover, and underneath had written "Helen, thank you for being such a great fan, love Joni" Boy, if only that was real! Not just the dream itself, but the book in the dream! It was full of song lyrics, poems, random notes and paintings and sketches. But I'm sure this is a "psychic" kind of dream, and Joni will release this soon! Back in 1997 when I was still new to the list and barely knew anyone on it, and before the concept of a "Jonifest" was even a gleam in a JMDL'ers eye, I had an incredibly vivid dream that we all got together for a weekend at a beautiful estate somewhere in California. When we arrived we were all stunned to see Joni there with Larry, Brian Blade, Greg Liesz and other band members playing on a small stage for us. Within 8 months both of these things basically came to past in real life. Julie Webb held the first Jonifest in Pittsburgh and JMDL'ers were invited by Joni to the private Warner Bros. tapings for the PWWAM show. Never in my wildest daydreams did I think this could happen. And I reply: Here's something I posted as a possible answer to this question awhile back: Specifically I think the song is about a breakup. More generally I think it is about searching for something - love, happiness, fulfillment, glory - and being ultimately frustrated by wrong turns & dead ends. Are the six jet planes really the hexagram of the heavens, some kind of sign pointing the way to fulfillment? No, they're just a false alarm. Is the drone of those flying engines calling you to find what you seek by wandering from place to place? Nope. Just another false alarm. Will leaving your present circumstances and travelling to those places people have gone to & are telling you to go to bring you the happiness you want? No, it's just another false alarm. Will the arms you crashed into when the overwhelming feeling you felt when you looked down on everything caused you to lose your balance keep you safe and make you happy? Guess again. Another false alarm. Is there some answer in fulfilling that dream to fly? Not for Amelia. She was swallowed by the sky or the sea. No answer there, just another false alarm. Finally the dreams of 747's over geometric farms are just a symptom of your wanderlust and don't really mean anything. They're all just dreams, dreams & false alarms. For what it's worth. Also, one good thing about that show is that they actually play the music for longer than a millisecond. In fact, I've often watched DC and said "what song is this, I gotta get it". However, to preserve the remnants of my reputation, I will state I don't watch DC anymore. I *did* quite enjoy it last season, but these teens have the self-awareness of 80 year olds, and the dialogue is just too clever and unteenage like, and it just got too annoying. But I for one think the music will actually be good on the show, since music is usually featured prominently -- at least, it will be more prominent than "Sex Kills" was on Melrose Place. I believe Jason mentioned this >7-song CD in a previous post. It is quite good. The preview EP is indeed excellent and leads me to believe that the full-length version of _Bachelor No. 2_ will be Aimee's best recording yet. Aimee started selling the preview discs during her brief tour and Lilith Fair dates last summer as a way of raising money to buy the masters for the album back from Interscope, after they declined to release it and dropped Aimee from the label. The material on the preview CD aren't the final, polished versions of the songs, but might as well be, considering how good they are. The full-length _Bachelor No. 2_ is supposed to be released later this month or in early February, according to the News section of Aimee's official web site. For now, the preview EP is still being sold at her shows and through . Also, Aimee does have nine songs (eight originals and a cover of Harry Nilsson's "One") on the soundtrack to the film _Magnolia_, which was released last month. The soundtrack is superb, and contains some of Aimee's finest work to date. Three of the songs ("Driving Sideways," "Deathly" and "You Do") will also appear on _Bachelor No. 2_, and the soundtrack also features the instrumental of "Nothing Is Good Enough," a song that is on the preview EP and will be on the album as well. There are a few exclusive tracks, including "Save Me," which is nominated for a Golden Globe award for Best Original Song, and is expected to garner an Oscar nomination as well. The film itself is quite good, with some inspired performances by Tom Cruise (who could not play any further against type than he does here) and Melora Walters, in particular. I really enjoyed the film, although I've heard a lot of people complain that it could have used an editor (it does clock in at over three hours). It's hard for me to really say much about its plot, without giving too many details away. It is quite an odd film at times, taking all sorts of unexpected twists and turns -- some rather hilarious, others unsettling. The film sets itself up with the notion that "strange things happen all the time," and a lot of how the various stories intersect have to do with chance and coincidence. Also, another theme, as stated in one character's dialogue, is that "We may be through with the past, but the past isn't through with us." Paul Thomas Anderson, the writer and director, says that he set out to write an adaption of Aimee Mann's songs for the screen, and for having provided the inspiration for some of the film's content, he rewards her greatly. Aimee's music is put to stunning use throughout, and three of the songs appear in their entirety. They almost perform a narrative function at times, commenting on the action that's taking place, and really do help to set the mood of certain scenes. I will admit that it's not a film for everyone, and there are some misfires throughout. But so much of what's there is good, it's easy enough (for me, at least) to overlook the flaws. The exposure Aimee's receiving from the film has been wonderful. The soundtrack debuted on the Billboard chart at #147 this week, and she's performed on a couple of talk shows and has appeared in many magazines this past month. She has two more TV appearances coming up next month (including one on Conan O'Brien's show) and a short tour with her husband Michael Penn, the dates of which can be found at . Also, for those who'd like to read more about Aimee's music for _Magnolia_, here are the links to a couple of reviews of the soundtrack: http://www.salon.com/ent/music/review/2000/01/12/magnolia/index.html http://www.wallofsound.go.com/reviews/stories/soundtrack_magnoliaIndex.html >I hate to compare artists to others in order to give an idea of their sound >to those who may not have heard them yet, but I'm unable to send an MP3 >clip. The best I can do is to say if you love Jonatha Brooke and >Lennon-McCartney (for Penn) you will love the warm, beautiful music of this >pair. The ywo of them are also doing a short tour around the U.S. now. I >don't have time to post the dates and places, (it's probably on her website) >but I highly recommend seeing them. I'm really looking forward to their tour and will be travelling to see them in Philadelphia next month. I'm also looking forward to Penn's new album, which will be released on February 1 and is entitled _MP4 (Days Since A Lost Time Accident)_. If anyone wants to hear an mp3 of the first single, "Lucky One," I may be able to upload one to my web space sometime this weekend. The Lennon-McCartney comparison is quite apt, especially in the case of Penn's last album _Resigned_, which was shamefully overlooked at the time of its release, but has some of the sharpest playing and melodies I've heard in a while. Hopefully the new album will receive the kind of attention this one deserved.
