Of course, you'd have to continue their education after the introduction. As for my "vote," I'd lend them Blue. As has been said, the material there is very accessable, but it's so deep. It's remained at the top of my chart since its release. Then, I'd go to FTR before hitting them with Hejira. Although STAS and LOTC are Genesis and Exodus in the Book of Joni, I wouldn't start a newcomer there (I'd start them in Ephesians). So, for me, Blue is Joni101. But I've enjoyed your comments. This is an excerpt from the August 5, 1994 press conference at the Edmonton Folk Festival: - ------------------------------------------- The interviewer asked her if she brought past experiences into her songs. joni says: For instance, in "Borderline" there is a line, "like a swan caught on the grass will draw a borderline." In upstate New York I saw beside a lake some people and a swan with her babies, and it's a good thing we were there because some bully kind of guy, and the swan was trying to back her babies into the water (they are clumsy out of water) and she would pick up twigs and drop them with authority like she was saying, "Don't come across my line," and it was such a pathetic defense against this guy who had real bad vibes and probably would have strangled the swan if we weren't there. So I had this image in my head of this swan building a fence. It was like playing possum, animals have such flimsy defenses but somehow they are honored within their own groups, but man doesn't honor them, like "that's no defense, I'm going to kill you!" - -------------------------------------------- The thing that was fascinating about this for me was that it could have been one of the lakes I live near here in Finger Lakes territory, NY. Instantly I ran to A&B to get him FTR and Hejira. I hope he listens to FTR first as I find its the easiest to grasp initially. Truth be told I kind of disliked Hejira when I first listened to it, but now I think its very well one of her greatest. Anyways I chose those two because I think if I had to I'd choose those 2 as my favorites, and I find together those 2 albums (plus TI) truely capture the essence of Joni (hmmm maybe i'll get him TI for Birthday? :D) Well anyways, heres wishing all of the realm of JMDL a Happy New Year. I'm FINALLY on the verge of purchasing my new home computer (those of you who have known me for a while are probably snickering, "Yeah, RIGHT!"--but yes, I'm really going to do it! My most immediate question involves which storage device I should choose. I had assumed I would order a zip drive, but have recently begun considering a CD-ROM Rewritable/recordable drive instead. My understanding is that I can not only listen to CD's on such a device, but store data and even cut music CD's. Is this correct? If so, what have your experiences been with the quality of music CD's? How about the effectiveness and ease of storing information: do you have any preference between the CD RW/rec and a zip drive? Also, I had anticipated purchasing a desktop due to the better value for the money, but have recently begun considering a laptop because of the travel demands of my work. I've always assumed laptops were not only more expensive up-front, but much less durable overall. Any idea how much more quickly I can expect a laptop to bite the dust?! Finally, does anyone with a DVD drive on his/her computer use it regularly? If so, for what? How satisfied are you with its performance? These questions are pretty basic, but I'm a babe in the woods as far as these things go. If anyone has any other ideas or recommendations regarding companies, accessories, service, etc., I'm all ears. It's been out about 6 months and she's just now getting her just dues as folks are entering their "best of" and "best new artist" lists. Very funky, very unique voice, a sultry cross between Betty Boop and Billie Holliday...very fun! Of course, "Bitter" is a MUST HAVE...if it ain't in the shops, go online at CD NOW or something... As for Tori, I find her work very spotty. If you want to get one Tori, Little Earthquakes or Under The Pink are both real good and accessible, Pink is a little more ambitious. I like her '99 release too it includes a live disc as well as new studio stuff, but she's been given too much leeway and her newer songs, while enjoyable, just don't stay with you much... And above all, AVOID "BOYS FOR PELE" at all costs. It's just plain bad, unless you get off on seeing her breast feed a piglet! Thanks to Sue for posting Joni's wonderful tale by way of explanation of "Borderline". Until I read the story, I had always interpreted the line: Every swan CAUGHT on the grass creates a borderline This makes the swan the "object" ... of what I assumed was the attack of a predator -- so the safety of the water became a borderline ... which in this case the swan wasn't fortunate enough to reach. Of course, after reading Joni's take on the lyric, the line should read: Every swan caught on the grass CREATES a borderline Now, as Joni relates, the swan is the active participant -- the creator of the borderline -- which I at least, think a much stronger and evocative image to have in mind when listening. I'm a little sad that I wasn't able to make it though. It seems to be getting harder to keep up with the joni digests (even on only-joni mode!). I end up scanning about 10 or 12 digests in one go in a rush to catch up. I have to admit, I didn't realise a London meeting was due in January! I must be rushing throug the digests so fast I am missing things ... ;-( As it turns out, I wouldn't have been able to make it. We had a whole bunch of friends over for NY's eve, and they stayed until the 5th, so we were busy cooking, eating, drinking, playing music and generally acting daft ... I really would have loved to meet up with you guys - but I'm sure there will be another meeting soon. I won't miss that one! I'm already looking forward to new albums from two of my all-time faves in February this year - Joni and Steely Dan. What a treat! For any Dan fans, there are sound clips of some of the new songs at www.steelydan.com. ...sounds good to me! Howard ------------------------------ Date: Thu, 06 Jan 2000 23:20:35 +0000 From: Rob Jordan Subject: Laptops versus Desktops / DVD (NJC) More ramblings about computer stuff for Mary. I've used laptops for work for 5 or 6 years and I've found that IBM and Toshiba are pretty durable. After a couple of years of heavy duty lugging around, it's common for bits to start falling off the outside (hinge covers and the like), but the precious insides keep working. I can't speak for other brands, but I'd be hesitant about choosing a no-name brand for a laptop, whereas I'd be pretty comfortable with el cheapo desktop. If you need to work on the road, that's a good enough reason to use a laptop. The drawbacks are higher cost, and limited expandability. For example, are you able to install a CDR drive? Or will you have to plug one in externally? DVD is not all that useful at the moment unless you want to watch movies on your PC. Potentially, it could be the next format for software distribution, but there aren't many titles yet. Maybe an encyclopaedia or two, and I think Windows 2000 will be distributed on DVD. Lots of PCs are supplied with a DVD drive as standard, though, since they are cheap (pretty much the same price as a regular CD ROM drive), sexy (if you want to watch movies on a PC) and ready for the next generation of software titles. DVD drives can read regular CDs as well. Does all this help? Happy to answer more, on- or off-list. Rob ------------------------------ Date: Thu, 06 Jan 2000 23:04:03 +0000 From: Rob Jordan Subject: CD Recorders (NJC and long) I sense that a few people share Mary's interest, so I'll take the risk of posting to the list. For a music lover, CDR is a great format, since you'll be able to use it as a regular CD drive and for recording music and data. Also the capacity of a disk is greater; 650MB compared to a max 250MB for Zip. Once you get your drive, you'll have a choice of two kinds of media: CDR, which you can write but never delete, or CDRW, which you can erase and write over and over again. The latter might sound more useful, but since CDRW disks cost a lot more (CDR roughly $1.50, CDRW maybe $10 - I'm guessing based on UK prices), and are slower to write, you'll probably find you use CDRs and throw them away when you no longer need the data. There are a few cases where CDRWs are really useful, but it's power user stuff; no need to worry about that yet. The main factor which separates drives is the recording speed. I have a trusty Ricoh drive which records at 2x, but this is considered old hat. Now there are 4x and 6x recorders at higher prices. I can see that could be pretty useful (speaking as one who spent a lot of my Christmas holiday waiting for CDs to finish recording!) For copying music CDs without gaps between tracks (annoying in live CDs) you need a device which can record disc-at-once (DAO) and software which also supports this mode. Nearly all devices do DAO now, and most software too, though it can be hidden away in the 'advanced' options. Wally, it's not significant whether your drive is internal or external, it just depends on the model. Here's a good list of some CDR drives which support DAO: http://www.goldenhawk.com/devices_body.htm The Adaptec software which Colin mentioned does DAO and is pretty useful all round for writing data and music discs. It's called Adaptec Easy CD Creator, and the 'light' version is bundled with a lot of drives. They'll try to sell you the 'deluxe' version, but it's probably not worth it for the average user. You will be able to make perfect copies of music CDs and compile your own 'mix' CDs. If you are interested in making CDs from analogue recordings (eg old vinyl or tapes), then that opens up another big topic which I'd better save for another time. For writing data, it's often easiest first to gather together all the files you want, into a directory on the hard drive, then use something like the Adaptec software to write it all to CDR at once. You can write files one at a time, like a floppy or Zip drive, but that needs a different kind of software eg Adaptec DirectCD. I don't bother with this, it's too confusing. If you want to use your CD recorder for regular backups, I would recommend some software called Veritas Backup Exec (you might see it called Seagate Backup Exec; Veritas took it over recently). It's really easy to use, and keeps track of a library of backup disks. Occasionally you'll have problems writing a disc, and end up wasting a CD (CDR users have a lot of coasters). Mostly, I've only experienced problems with no-name discs, which are really cheap, but not worth the trouble. Nowadays, I stick with Kodak or Maxell media, which I buy on the Internet at low, but not rock-bottom prices. If you follow this link you'll find all the answers to your CDR questions and lots more: http://www.fadden.com/cdrfaq/ ------------------------------ Date: Thu, 6 Jan 2000 15:07:04 -0800 (PST) From: zapuppy2@webtv.net (Penny) Subject: Re: just ONE loaner! The featured artist are Grammy winners Arturo Sanoval and Tito Puente. I've heard of Puente, but I don't have any of his albums, and I'm not familiar at all with Sanoval. The newspaper is making a bigger fuss about Sanoval who is a jazz trumpeter, but he'll also be playing the piano. The highlight of the newspaper article is the piano that he will play. Is it legal anywhere on the globe? Payola seems to rear it's head every few years. The scandal that ruined Alan Freed was one notorious instance. Dick Clark was doing the same as Freed, but somehow managed to avoid being dragged down by it. A few years ago there was another big shakeup, and the independant songpluggers mostly went out of business fast. I read a couple of weeks ago that there is a new investigation underway. In the last year or so, some radio stations have openly offered to play music for pay. How they can do this, I don't know, maybe it's considered a commercial. One Florida station, for $200 will guarantee to play your song, plus a 30sec promo. Related: I was at a local public radio station last week, and the music director gave me a candy bar sent to her along with the new CD from an independant. She said "they never send anything good since the payola thing". Payola is like prostitution, it will always be there. Related: big radio stations have concerts every year in which major recording stars top the bill, playing for free (often the proceeds benefit a charity). It is expected that if you want your music played, you will do the show. I'm sure this subject could fill several books.
