I've been a Joni fan since the 70's, with some of my favorite albums of hers being Hejira, Summer Lawns, and Ladies of the Canyon. There have been a few gaps in my Joni collection for a long time, though, and one was just filled on my birthday (12/27) when I received Blue on CD. My God, where have I been??? This album is amazing. Usually, when I add a Joni to my collection, I need to listen to it a few times before it "opens up" to me. That happened with Blue last night for me..... suddenly, I had listened to it front to back four times, and still could not bring myself to turn off the damn stereo. And here I am this morning, listening again, amazed at this genius' depth. My favorite Joni works combine music and lyrics that do two things at once: evoking deep sadness/longing/loneliness/regret, and inspiring great joy/exhilaration/happiness. Blue does this so beautiful.... it's all allowed to co-exist on this album, and the result is an amazing piece of work. I may need to reconsider which Joni album is my favorite! Blue now contends for that title. Anyway, just wanted to say "hi" and I look forward to getting to know you all and reading your posts. mjf __________________________________________________ Do You Yahoo!? To the point of this post: Joni made the New York Times' "Musical Mileposts of the Century" list, published in this morning's paper! NYT music critics Jon Pareles, Neil Strauss, Ben Ratliff, and Ann Powers agreed on "25 albums representing turning points and pinnacles in 20th-century popular music," although admittedly, focusing more on the second half of the century than the first. They listed the albums in chronological order, rather than ranking them. About Joni's "Blue," they wrote: "A restless woman travels, falls in love and longs for what she left behind as she moves on; in the background 1960's ideals crumble. Joni Mitchell turned unsparing autobiography into sparse songs that quietly rejected symmetry and happy endings while they poured out her yearning. As she ushered in a confessional mode for pop songwriting, few of her emulators noticed that her seemingly unguarded revelations were so finely constructed." Among the groups and other individuals artists represented on the list were Louis Armstrong, Al Jolson, Billie Holiday, Duke Ellington, Hank Williams, Elvis, Tito Puente, Sinatra, John Coltrane, Miles Davis, Aretha Franklin, Dylan, Jimi Hendrix, Bob Marley and the Wailers, Public Enemy, Michael Jackson, and Nirvana. Included on the "alternate" list were releases by runner-ups Charlie Parker, Joao Gilberto, Ornette Coleman, and Edith Piaf, among others. Nice company for our Joan--and vice versa! I felt the same way as I spent almost unconscionable hours in front of the TV screen. To see so many peoples and cultures come together (virtually) to celebrate one thing (okay, not the new millenium) really touched something inside of me. By far the most moving ceremony had to be the return of Nelson Mandela, and others who had been imprisoned, to the prison where he had spent 18 years. With no fanfare or fireworks, they entered their old cells, lit candles, and carried them out to pass on to children waiting in the courtyard. I'm misting up just typing this out. I found it interesting that throughout the entire coverage the announcers never bothered to correct anyone on the misconception that the new millenium was starting. Apparently the same thing happened at the change from the 1800's to the 1900's. I think the true millenial change is less important than the change of numbers: 2000 sounds like the future is here! The 1900's already sound like ancient history. And, lest we forget, even the numbers are irrelevant to a huge part of the world. The Chinese and some Islamic nations joined the celebration despite not using the western calendar. The entire celebration seemed to be the world saying "Here we are, we're a part of the global village, let's get together and celebrate the future." Boy, does that ever sound starry-eyed! WELL, I suppose you can't really go wrong, it all being Joni, can you? I would submit that Night Ride Home is a good one to avoid living without for too much longer. Hypnotic rhythms, vivid images, and an ingenius merging of a great Yeat's poem with her lyrical and musical style ("Slouching toward Bethlehem"). Unfortunately many people do not think this. many think we are born 'in sin' and are therefore not born good, and can never be good within and of ourselves. that is very sad. I think to have faith in people is so important. This does not negate having faith in a higher power but to me one cannot have one without the other.Although people many people think nurture has nothing to do with it, these same people are quick to take the credit when their children 'do well' and quick to disown when they 'do bad'. Also experience is what we are all the rsult of. Sometimes experience can so damage a person, they are incapable of empathy. this is dreadful. Okay so some people-not the jury- are convinced it was OJ. From what i recall, some of the evidence didn't fit for it being OJ. But then why did he run from the Police? The truth is we do not know. The thing I noticed about this story was that the money for this concotion came from germany-very odd. why would that be when there are plenty of Nazi's in the USA who would give the dough? They give plenty to the IRA for guns and bombs so i think they would not need to go to Germany for support. In the end whoever killed those two will be accountable for it. we can only guess who that is. Everyone is responsible. when i came out of the closet as a lesbian, i really had a taste of what the priveledged fail to recognize. I'm not saying "woe is me"... at all... because I'm still very priveledged... but I think I can more easily admit and appreciate those advantages now. People will talk about repression and descrimination forever, though... and I don't want to get into that discussion, because I think what you said at the end of your message is what really counts... God doesn't look at the world that way. I've never been a bible beater or very "religious"... but I guess you could say that I am religious. I believe that God is a loving god and we should follow god's example of love and forgiveness. And bringing it back to Joni... I think her music brings it down to that, too. She wants peace... and she knows afterall, that all ANYONE (Black, White... or even a murderer) wanted was just to come out of the cold. :) Nanci Griffith knows it's a Hard Life Wherever you Go... and Tracy Chapman says we should start all over, make a New Beginning... which I think we could do. :) That possibility is what keeps the world spinning. :) Sarah On Mon, 3 Jan 2000, catman wrote: > > but what it comes down to is that people are born good... life > > and experience and bad choices turn people into killers sometimes... but > > there is always hope, because we're all born with the same potential to > > love > > and be good poeple. :) > > I couldn't agree more-that is what i believe too. The acting was very good and the director as well I thought did a good job. I think it was more the screenwriting I had problems with. When I left the theatre I was thinking how much more I enjoyed old Hitchcock classics which seem much more clever and subtle and how much easier it was with them to suspend my disbelief. I didn't like the way in which the movie began by just jumping into everything immediately and I thought the whole ending was pretty weak. It seemed like the writer didn't know where to go with this character he had developed so he just let him continue on his way which seemed a little too easy and he started to seem less like a real person and more two dimensional and overemphasized. In the past several years, I've found the movies I've enjoyed the most have been foreign films (French, Russian) etc....they seem to have better stories than alot of American movies. The young girl was 12-year-old Ellena Baroni, a soloist with the Sydney Children’s Choir. They performed a new work by Australian composer Ross Edwards, “Breath of the Spirit”, written specifically for the occasion. Edwards was quoted in the Sydney Morning Herald as saying: "It's quite a gentle piece. I wanted it to be something meditative and reflective. It's about the wonder of the dawn, hope for the millennium and so on." He went on to explain that it was a chant, not a narrative text and, rather than telling a story, it featured the word “dawn” from a variety of languages. Ellena was joined by five other musicians lashed to the sails of the Opera House. There was a didgeridoo, a Japanese bamboo flute, a tenor saxophone and two Burmese gongs. The choir of 30 faced the dawn on the eastern side of the Opera House and, to make the whole thing audible, the musicians performed over a prerecorded version. It was a moving performance and marked the transition into the 2000s most effectively. The fire-crackers ran a poor second IMHO. Cheers, John (in Sydney). __________________________________________________________________ Get your free Australian email account at http://www.start.com.au/ ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 4 Jan 2000 03:37:45 -0300 From: "Wally Kairuz" Subject: RE: ellena baroni NJC john, do you know if there is or will be a recording of ross edwards's work? ellena baroni is a name i will never forget. wallyk, fixing dinner at 3:36 am. how decadent! > > The young girl was 12-year-old Ellena Baroni, a soloist with the > Sydney Children's Choir. We had such nice weather during this past holiday. It was kind of wet and rainy before Christmas, then it got super clear and sunny for days on end. Normally I go to the beach once a week on Sunday, (there's drumming), but I got to go several times over the holiday! New Year's Eve I rode around with a friend checking out various parties. One had a rock band, one had a "50's" theme, and one was drums and guitars around the campfire, under the stars. Ended up in Pahoa town for the fireworks at midnight--fireworks for New Year's are very big in Hawaii. There was also pretty good music, (electric), at 3 different places in town, all within 1/2 a block. Pahoa is in an area called Puna--some people from around here are referred to as "Punatics". I always felt like I never "fit in" before I moved to the Big Island. Many people who live here are like that and we all seem to fit together in this Island community. Hawaii attracts for one thing, people who don't want to live in cold weather. It is actually quite cheap, (relatively), to live in Puna. You don't need a lot of clothes and heat and there is always free food to forage. New Year's Day was an especially nice beach day. Perfect weather all day-- water clean, clear and calm. Lots of good friends enjoying the beach. The whales are passing by these days, and dolphins show up regularly also. I have webtv but not regular t.v., (no reception without antennae or satellite dish), so don't know about the celebrations around the world, but glad to hear it sounds positive. It's been rainy again lately, (but still lots of sunshine). We need it all for the plants, people and animals to stay healthy. The JMDL is another place I fit in by being "different", (a Joni fan). I guess one of the reasons I don't post too often is once I get started I have a lot to say. But after reading this list for awhile and feeling the spirit of kinship with you-all, I feel comfortable sharing my rambling once in awhile. One more interesting thing I would like to share-- when I de-lurked for Joni's birthday we were having a birthday party for a friend here and since then six of the people who were there that night have moved in, making nine of us living in the same house! It wasn't me who invited everyone to move in but I am just "going with the flow" and enjoyig this extended family vibration. Everyone gets along pretty well and I still have my personal space so it's been pretty fun, for the most part. Anyone is still welcome to visit if you make it to the Big Island I would love to show you some of the most beautiful and amazing places on earth.
