Thanks Bob - I felt guilty all day yesterday not having given any Joni either - same reason - but happily RECEIVED Henry Diltz CDRom "Under The Covers" (very well produced and fun - lovely Joni photos from the Laurel Canyon days) and a CSN Songbook (now I must buy a guitar...) from hubby, and under the heading of "Gifts Bought by Self for Self" I received the CPR video recorded at the Montreux Jazz Festival 1998. Still looking for myself in the audience... Between songs they talk about how they got together as a band, how they put their music together, inspirations, and how it feels creating music with/for David and his son James that he gave up for adoption as a baby. Am about 1/2 way through it. Only disappointment is that he sang "Yvette in English" at the concert but it's not on the tape. And he sang it so well. Very cool mousepad Bob! Lori HAPPY NEW YEAR EVERYBODY ET BONNE ANNEE TOUT LE MONDE!!! ************ Good job, Don! I would give Joni CD's for presents but they wouldn't be appreciated I'm afraid... But I did GET some Joni presents...my little sister gave me a Joni mousepad (like yours Catgirl!) and a decal that says "On the 8th day God created Joni Mitchell". Pretty cool! And I also got some blank CD's which will probably eventually be used for Joni stuff... The second video he refers to, though mistakenly as 1998, is the Much Music Special, also known as Just Ice from 1994. Before the official Video Trees, we had this video in distribution. I think I made about 25 of them for the "old timers." There is an audio boot out there also of this show. My master is not the best quality, so the copies aren't the greatest, but it is our Joni looking radiant and sounding spectacular. Have never seen the first which he mentions. If anyone out there in Joniland still remembers me, (hee-hee) I have been really, incredibly busy, and for a while, was well over 2 weeks behind in Joni mail, and getting even more behind every day. So, one day, I had this "intuitive thing" about the list, and saw MG online. I asked her if there was anything going on on the list that I should know about, or that I was missing, since at that point there was about a snowball's chance in hell that I was EVER going to catch up, and she told me that THAT NIGHT, Kakki and others were going to LACE to see Joni's paintings! Talk about timing! So.....I abandoned the weeks and weeks worth of mail that I missed, and started reading from that time, but with in days, was way behind again. To make a long story short, I made a goal to be caught up by Christmas, and I did it! It's so good to be back and know what is going on with everyone. A belated hearty welcome to new listers, and happy birthday greetings to all that have had a birthday in my absence. Thank you to everyone who wrote about the LACE experiences! I LOVED reading each and every one of them! I was so excited to read that Kakki gave Joni the box set from Jonifest New England! I also was glad to see some of the performance regrets turn to understanding of what, in my mind, the "real" experience of Jonifest was about. To me, it was about coming together, being in community brought together by a common bond, and making music together, out of sheer love for the music. It was "not" about perfection, or making music specifically for a CD. The bond that is the JMDL shows through every second of that CD, and is why I continue to have these "annual" Jonifests! ;-) I also loved reading that Joni not only received the cookbook, but has actually read it!!! YEEEEEEE HAAAAAAA!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! I also loved reading the account of Wally's weekend with Joni. All I can say, is that it could not have happened to a more wonderful, and more deserving person. I am so very glad for you, Wally! A few things off the top of my head...... Catgirl: Your salsa was NOT a flop!! There was just too, too much food at Jonifest! It was GREAT!!!!! John Low: Yes, I have the LP "The Ship!" It was bought during one of those quirky things I have done all my life. (Please, please someone tell me I am not the ONLY one who does this!!!) Every once in a while, since I was about 13, when I have a little extra cash in my pocket, I will browse a music store and pick up a CD (used to be an LP back then) that I have never heard of before, and buy it just because I feel drawn to the cover. I have found some incredible gems from doing this, not to mention an occasional flop. Someone mentioned Diane Ziegler a while back on the list, and I found her this way, as well as many more! Harper Lou: Congrats on quitting smoking! Hang in there! Bob: Thank you for the idea of having a second account for Joni mail! I am convinced that switching my Joni mail over to a separate account was the only reason I could catch up with all the mail. Les: Thank you for EVERYTHING!!! You are the most kind, generous man I know! Evian: I wet my pants with the kitty litter story! To catch you up on what's been going on....I was really, really busy before the holidays. Lots of holiday-type things going on, and year-end kid stuff, etc. It seems like there was something going on every night of the week in December, including a wonderful dinner party at Maggie's house which included Chuck E and his wife, Barbara. The other big thing that has happened is that my Mom was diagnosed with breast cancer very recently. :-( So, we are all trying to deal with this news. I am presently up in New Hampshire, in my beloved mountains, and I cannot remember a time when I've needed to have this time more. I was so stressed before I came up, and I am so grateful to have this place to come to where I can recharge and regroup. The phone hardly rings, there is no mail, and it is about the only place I can really totally, 100% relax. The Solstice was spent at the top of a mountain looking at the brightest moon I had ever seen in the arms of my beloved. {sigh} It just doesn't get much better than that. To all of you: Thank you for the beautiful community that is the JMDL. You have been there for me through all of 1999.....when I needed a shoulder, a laugh, a cry, a hug. You have welcomed me into your countries and communities. You have shared my home, my food, my stories, and you have blessed me with your music. May you all go into the New Year and New Millenium with peace, joy, hope, and love to fill your hearts. I feel truly blessed to have this community in my life. I am so looking forward to seeing many of you in New Orleans, and hope that Labor Day won't be too soon afterwards for many of you to travel to the New England area. ;-) Hugs, Ashara www.photon.net/lightnet Oh, P.S.!!! But, my little sister has always loved CMIARS, and I gave her some of my old cassettes before Christmas so she could hear some other Joni. She is currently hooked on Blue! She had been without a CD player, so I think she will be getting some Joni CDs from me in April for her birthday, seeing that Santa was kind and brought her a new stereo!! Years ago, she had taken a job out East as a nanny. She was placed with an awful family who didn't believe in paying the help!! When she finally got a check, she packed her bags, bought CMIARS on cassette, and boarded a bus. It was the only tape she had to listen to for 3 days. She said Joni helped her make the trip home!! I have been searching for CMIARS on CD, to no avail!! None of the stores here have it. Some are totally loving it, warts and all, and others are dismayed at the sound quality. It can be off-putting in this day and age of the highest tech to hear a scratchy recording, so if you have been thinking of getting a copy but have sensitive ears, you may not think it is worth the trouble of sending a blank tape, etc., at this time. For those who have yet to receive it, the problem is not with my tape deck! ;-) But there will be some other ways to experience the interview - Catgirl has offered to try to clean up the original and another listmember has volunteered to transcribe the interview (YAY!) I tried a few times to get a good copy from the radio station and they firmly said "no way." I can understand this because KCSN is a public/member-supported station which completely relies on donations and fundraising drives to stay on the air. For stations like this, a prized recording of a Joni interview is very valuable currency and they will often offer (and sell) copies of such recordings for $100 or more to raise funds. A few of us were initially perplexed as to why Joni would choose to give the interview to a station where almost no one would hear her. I did some research on KCSN and got a little more insight. The humble little station apparently is rapidly becoming a "hip, underground" hit in the area and may be giving the well-known KCRW some stiff competition in the near future. KCSN already has plans, and is raising funds, to install "booster" equipment to extend their broadcasting reach and they have a new website "under construction." I would not be surprised if Joni was trying to support them a bit in their efforts by giving them this exclusive interview. Toward the end of the interview the DJ Neil Ingles, even jokes with Joni that they will have to install a special antenna on her roof so she can pick up the interview ;-D Thanks again to everyone who has helped out on this. I only sent one Joni tape out. A good friend of mine has a daughter that is 20 yrs. She (Kelly), mentioned to me once that she had picked up TTT and really liked it! She had never heard any Joni prior to that. So of course, it was my duty to see that she be introduced to more Joni. I thought I'd send along a sampler. I started out taping a song from STAS. I became so immersed in the music that after three songs, I realized that I had to stop and move on to the next album. I had to include "Morning Morgantown" and" For Free" as these were the songs that I had been introduced to in 7th grade. "For The Roses" and "Hejira" were so difficult in choosing. -I love them all ! I did narrow it down to two songs from each album. Songs from "Court and Spark", "Blue" and "Don Juan's Reckless Daughter were included. I ended with three songs from TI and "Clouds" and "Urge For Going" to bring it all back around again. One could easily say that James Lee Stanley is the last great undiscovered singer/songwriter in America. Check out his seven releases on Beachwood Records and you know what I mean : "Even Cowgirls Get The Blues", "The Envoy", "Ripe Four Distraction", "Simpatico", "Domino Harvest", "Two Man Band" and "Freelance Human Being". James Lee Stanley has been a recording artist for more than three decades now, with releases on LeGrand Records, RCA, MCA, Elektra/Asylum and Takoma, as well as his own label, Beachwood Records. The first six releases on his own label, features a who's-who in Californian West Coast Rock: Bonnie Raitt, Stephen Bishop, Paul Barrere, Timothy B Schmitt, Larry Carlton, Russ Kunkel, Peter Tork, Rita Coolidge, Lowen & Navarro, Severin Browne and several others. His latest release, "Freelance Human Being", is a solo album with just James' voice and guitar. A beautiful piece of work! Apart from his own compositions, there's also a great version of Donovan's "Fat Angel". This discussion of a Cockburn instrumental called "Deep Lake" comes from the BC list, Humans: I could be mistaken on this, but I think that the tuning on this song was actually inspired by Joni Mitchell. When I saw him play this song in Keene, NH last March, he took a lot of time in tuning his guitar and explained that he'd heard Joni playing in this weird tuning and that he insisted she teach him it when he was in (I think) San Francisco for some reason or another, and then he wrote "Deep Lake" not long after in Tahoe. No, I don't know that - I just assume that because that is how they raise money and is probably the reason they won't provide me with a gratis copy of it. >If you hear anything about it, let us know and I'm sure enough > of us would pitch in to make it worth the radio station's effort. I'm pretty sure I will never hear about it as long as they only broadcast within a few blocks of the college. But Catgirl's plan is good to perhaps persuade them to give up a copy in advance of any offcial fundraiser for a large group donation. > I wonder if Reprise is going to issue an official "Interview CD" for the new > one? Hi Terry, I had to crawl out of "read-only mode" to respond to this question; one I've posed to the list several times. I've received plenty of great advice over the years, especially from the "List Audio Specialist," Gerald Notaro. This year, I had settled on a Aiwa XRM-55. It's considered an "ultra-mini" system and doesn't especially look like a "boom box" thingy. You can read more about it here http://www.aiwa.com/Catalog99/models/XR-M55.asp. It's about $549.00 at Circuit City. There's not much out there for less money that will make, hmmm, well - Herbie Hancock, sound sooo good. One of the guys from the computer department lured me away and talked me into buying a "Sound Blaster Live" add-on for my computer - (around $200), along with a set of "Altec Lansing" computer speakers, complete with subwoofer (another $100 for two small satellite speakers and the subwoofer). I CANNOT TELL YOU HOW WONDERFUL MY COMPUTER SPEAKERS SOUND!!!!! And all for $300! I'm loving it at this very moment. Herbie sounds soooo good! The only downside is - you still only have the one CD-rom player. I also bought a CD-writer for my computer, but I'm a one CD at a time person anyway, so I don't really care about the multi-CD thing. You can save a little if you just want to get a "Sound Blaster" audio card for around $150, but with the "Sound Blaster Live" for $50 more, you get an awesome software bundle that also allows you to plug in an electric guitar, or microphone, or both, etc. and make MP3's and send off your music to us all! So, see, ya just gotta try it. Plus, as we all know, if you don't like it, Circuit City will take it back! Good luck, Bev P.S. Neither I nor any of my relatives work for Circuit City - I just like their prices and return policies ;-> ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 29 Dec 1999 21:58:56 -0500 From: "Jennifer L. Is KCSN a college > station?? That could have been the now famous KCRW when they first started out at Santa Monica College - they were probably also on real low power in the beginning. KCSN is also described as very eclectic and kind of a big, eccentric free for all, so it could be them, too. I can see Joni digging their non "formula music" attitude. They are based at California State Univeristy, Northridge. Out at the beach, one can be amazed at the distant stations you can pick up sometimes. I've been watching you all anonymously for about a week--feels very weird to observe so many exchanges like a fly on the wall--the magic of technology. Anyway, I figured it was time for me to transform myself from a fly into a being that can type and join, for the first time ever, the cyber community. So I've noticed--with great delight--that those who have made references to Joni's first album have called it "Song to a Seagull". This, of course, is its proper name, but I was wondering if any of you know when and why the record company got into the inane habit of calling it "Joni Mitchell"?
