I received 3 new CDs as presents. One was the Nigel Kennedy album "Classic Kennedy" which features 20 short compositions including a beautiful version of "Urge for Going". Joni must be so proud to have her name included among a list of such brilliant composers and to have her work played by such a talented violinist. There are pieces by Vivaldi, Massenet, Brahms, Chopin, Satie, Gershwin, Bach, Handel, Debussy, Rimsky-Korsakov, Kroll and Sarasate plus one by Kennedy, himself and 2 traditional folk songs. Here's a clip from the sleeve notes:- "It was the Russian composer, Sergey Rachmaninov, who once sagely remarked - "To say what you have to say and to say it briefly, lucidly and concisely, is the most challenging problem for the composer." This still holds true today: to conjure up in just a few minutes an entire emotional soundworld is one of the most exacting disciplines in music......This album showcases some of the finest miniatures ever written, each and every one an inspired gem in its own right." I've been imagining all those classical music buffs buying this album and saying "Who is this Joni Mitchell?" Lets hope they take the trouble to explore her music further. Jacky PS The other 2 CDs were List inspired :- Jan Garbarek and Jane Siberry ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 27 Dec 1999 18:48:07 -0500 From: waytoblu@mindspring.com Subject: Re: Millennium Countdown #9 Subject: Millennium Countdown #9 # 9 Elton John The company I work for, Woodrich Inc., installed and finished hardwood floors for Elton John in his Atlanta penthouse apartment. Well, I can : The Brooklyn Cowboys - Doin' Time On Planet Earth ( Leap Records ) Steeped in influences by Hank Williams and Gram Parsons, The Brooklyn Cowboys made a left turn through Rockpile and Rolling Stones and wound up "Doin' Time On Planet Earth". The band creates music that is somehow both familiar and refreshingly new, featuring melodic songs in a country rock style, edged with cutting lyrics and a hard rockin' beat. The band was born in 1996 when singer, songwriter and guitarist Walter Egan met writer and drummer Fredrough Perry in that hotbed of roots and alt-country known as Brooklyn, New York. Egan (best known for his hit "Magnet & Steel", as well as his song "Hearts On Fire" recorded by Gram Parsons and Emmylou Harris) was engaged by Perry to help him record some of his songs. The sessions went so well that they were soon rehearsing weekly to prepare material for public display. Soon they were making waves on the country rock circuit throughout the Northeast, with their newest member Buddy Cage, legendary pedal steel player from the New Riders Of The Purple Sage. When Egan departed for Nashville in 1997, the Cowboys reformed in Music City with an expanded lineup of allstars. On bass guitar: Supe Granda of the Ozark Mountain Daredevils; on vocals and acoustic guitar: Joy Lynn White; on keyboards: Michael Webb (ex-Stacey Earle). They were joined in the studio by fiddle player Vassar Clements and Merle Haggard's guitarist Redd Volkaert. On top of all this, the revered player and producer Al Perkins (Gram Parsons, Burrito Bros, Manassas) produced them. As if this firehouse power wasn't enough, included on their debut disc is the last song written by Gram Parsons. It's a co-write by Parsons and Egan dating from the days just before Gram's death, and is called "Carolina Calypso". Copies of their great debut album are available from : Leap Records 156 Fifth Avenue New York NY 10010 U.S.A.
