I've been thinking of organizing a trip there (it's about 3 hours from my place). Years ago, I did some performing in parks, etc. It's great fun (if you leave your guitar case open, you might even make some spare change... gas money.... don't dress too well!). Email me if you're interested. I'm thinking of Springtime, when it's not so cold. There is a Society there that local musicians can join, and they set you up with "protected territories" like in Grand Central Terminal and various subway locations. These areas are pretty much "sewn up" but a lot of places, like all the little parks and such scattered about, you can just set up and go. I'd particularly like to hear from any one in the City as to what they think, and for other ideas, like a location (coffeehouse, etc) that we could gather at that evening and do a mini-JoniFest. By the way, regarding my post about Listers near the central PA area... I've heard from Catgirl (near Philly... an hour and a half from me) and Harper Lou (practically right next door !). Would still like to hear from someone in Baltimore area and the WashDC area. It was about the last studio recording she made and her voice is very raw. Ray Ellis did the arrangements, heavy on strings with some high-pitched, disembodied sounding vocal backing (that ethereal sounding 'oo-oooo-ooo' kinda stuff). Anyway, all I want to say is that if you do pick this one up and it isn't your cup of tea, you aren't hearing Billie at her best, imo. Of course there are exceptions to every rule. Mark in Seattle ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 22 Dec 1999 21:00:10 -0800 From: "Kakki" Subject: Joni Interview - Wow oh wow! Wow wow wow!! I picked up the tape tonight and just finished through my first listen. First, I have to tell you all that the sound quality is not what we normally expect. The recording service had quite a time trying to pick up the reception even though they are only located a few miles from CSN. We've had constant high winds here in the Valley the past two days and that greatly affected the reception. Also, the interview actually took place at the cavernous LACE, and this adds to an echo-y, "in the garage" sound. But in a way, it's kind of neat and sounds very vintage - reminds me of driving out in the middle of nowhere and picking up a scratchy AM radio program. Maybe Les can put on his "Master Recording Engineer" hat and work some magic to clean it up for the MP3. On the other hand, the CONTENT of this interview is beyond FANTASTIC!!! For some reason Joni sounds so young - it's like listening to her talk back in 1968 or something. She is also the most relaxed and high-spirited I've ever heard her. She giggles, jokes and laughs loudly so much all through the interview that it was contagious and got me all giddy, too. She also goes into her many funny, mimicking voices at times. She starts out tossing off some very pointed and "thumb my nose" comments about art school and the art world that may raise some fur. (Of course, I was cheering loudly ;-) But the very best part of all is that she discusses, in depth, almost every painting in the exhibit - the how, what, why and where. *Finally* we hear it from the Joni's mouth!! And it is just incredibly fascinating to hear her stories about each one! I'm going to save the details until more people have a chance to hear it, but I will throw out a few tidbits. She created all the paintings for the new album in TWO WEEKS! The cover painting of her at the bar was taken from an actual photograph of her when she was in her early thirties. (She said she did texturize the face a bit to "age" it). She said that the "heart" on her sleeve actually appears in the original photograph! The Yellow Roses painting was done in an 18-hour straight stretch (!) and came about after Klein got a bit put out that she had all these paintings of Donald going on the TTT and new album and started feeling very slighted about it all ;-) And there's tons and tons more details. Only two songs off the new album are played - A Case of You and Comes Love. With the distortion of the sound you are not going to hear it the way it should be at all, but will get a very fuzzy idea of it ;-) This is an amazing gem of an interview. At some point, I will try to transcribe it all for posterity. I'll have it out to Les and a few others tomorrow.
