Oh God, this brought back some memories! A friend of mine always used to light her farts. This is when we were at university (technically NOT children anymore!), living in a hostel, and it was usually under the influence of alcohol. I remember one time she let rip and she was wearing a pair of nylon Adidas track pants - you know, the old ones with the 3 stripes down the leg, and the zips at the ankles with the "stirrups". Anyway, she got a bit too close with the lighter, and melted a hole in her pants. I've never laughed so much in my life, particularly when she dumped a full pint of beer on her crotch to put it out, then complained that there was nothing to drink! Honestly, when I remember some of the things I did, it's a wonder I'm still here to tell the tales! Luckily I'm all grown up now, and far too mature for that sort of thing! But the entire verse (and chorus) from "Crazy" is: "You take your action, in weekends at a time. But you can make all week your own if you set your mind. You see security in the chrome American dream. But I don't believe in livin' in the middle with available extremes. Me I'm feelin' lazy and it's me that's on the line. Working at the travel agents I have various 'other' duties like picking up tickets from other wholesalers etc. Yesterday I was given the option of picking up a ticket at this place last night or this morning. I did this morning. I was sitting waitng for the ticket to print when on the radio in the office I heard Travis' version of River. I believe it's a Bside to their current single. The piano is very Joni and the delivery is very Joni, Travis going up to falsetto for the ends. I waited for him to back announce it but he just rambled on about someone seeing their gig at the Corn Exchange, probably Cambridge. And last night, I was in Music and Video exchange in Nottin Hill, listening to my compilation minidisc of Mitchell, Mingus, Waits, RLJ et al and the track was Shiny Toys. The track was just ending when I decided to look in the 7" singles and I flicked thru the M section and the UK print of Shiny Toys came into view. The picture is a colourpencil sketch of Joni by someone who made Joni look slightly jowly. Didn't buy it. They also had some other Joni items, Japanese prints of Clouds etc. A good shop. I think it may have been more of a "class" thing and she wasn't the brightest bulb on the Christmas tree either. >i sometimes have a hard time understanding english speakers. two years ago, >at barnes and noble i had to ask the woman that did the gift wrapping to >repeat FIVE times what she was saying before i understood that she wanted >to >know whether i wanted a card. I often have the same trouble myself - some people just talk funny, or not loud enough! >do canadians have trouble understanding >americans and vice versa? For the most part, I'd say no. It depends on if they've got some kind of major regional accent or not. To me, people from Buffalo, which is not all that far from here, sound like they're saying "a" for "o", as in Rachester for Rochester; dall for doll. A lot of people claim that Canadians say "hoose" for "house" and "aboot" for "about" (it's a Scottish thing!) but to me it sounds more like "hewse" and "abewt". I might take a while getting used to a Texas accent for example, but I don't think it would take that long. Because of TV, I think the accents are beginning to blend more and become more standardized, but that still does depend on where you live. One Canadian accent that's really different is the Newfoundland one. Because they're an island separate from most of the rest of us, they have a very unique way of speaking. Most of them are descendents of fishermen from Ireland, Scotland and coastal parts of England and Cornwall and so on. My grandfather was a Newfie, although i don't remember having trouble understanding him, but he may have adapted to "normal" Canadian speech when he left the rock. >i find it virtually impossible to understand australians. I have a bit of a problem getting used to that as well, or New Zealanders, or South Africans (South Efricans). But I think living in Toronto these days, there are so many recent immigrants from all over the place that you're exposed to so many different accents, so you get used to them fairly quickly. We didn't used to have a lot of Hispanic people here - my Mexican brother-in-law was kind of an anomaly when he first came here (he still is, but for different reasons! Haha!) Now you hear a lot of Spanish being spoken and many people with Spanish accents - a lot of them are from Guatamala and so on. I find Philipinos kind of hard to understand - sometimes, if their accent is quite heavy. >just before the last jonifest, i was staying at this very >"festive" hotel in chelsea. after a...let's call it a brief encounter with >two aussies, i asked their names. for maybe about a whole minute i believed >that one of them was called "goy". i thought, what an extraordinary way to >call one's child. maybe he had been adopted by an orthodox jewish family, >and they called him goy to distinguish him from the rest of his siblings. >it >then dawned on me that his name was guy!!! A few weeks ago, I took my kids to a park when along came an odd-looking couple - a bleached blonde short woman with an equally short and somewhat simian-looking hairy man with an overly large head and overly long arms - with their young boy of about 5. The little boy was going down the slide, and for some reason the woman (his mum obviously) didn't care for how he had done it. She must have thought he was living dangerously or something - maybe he went down backwards - I must admit, I wasn't paying much attention to other people's kids - so she said, "Gary, that's not the roight way to go down the sloid". Now that's a weird accent, and I think it was probably Newf (but I'm not entirely sure!) It wasn't Australian despite the "oi" for the long "i" sound. Catherine (in Toronto) cateri@hotmail.com Merry whatever... THE 12 DAYS OF CHRISTMAS (For the politically correct) On the 12th day of the Eurocentrically imposed midwinter festival, my Significant Other in a consenting adult, monogamous relationship gave to me: TWELVE males reclaiming their inner warrior through ritual drumming. ELEVEN pipers piping (plus the 18-member pit orchestra made up of members in good standing of the Musicians Equity Union as called for in their union contract, even though they will not be asked to play a note), TEN melanin deprived testosterone-poisoned scions of the patriarchal ruling class system leaping, NINE persons engaged in rhythmic self-expression, EIGHT economically disadvantaged female persons stealing milk-products from enslaved Bovine-Americans, SEVEN endangered swans swimming on federally protected wetlands, SIX enslaved Fowl-Americans producing stolen non-human animal products, FIVE golden symbols of culturally sanctioned enforced domestic incarceration, (NOTE after members of the Animal Liberation front threatened to throw red paint at my computer, the calling birds, French hens and partridge have been reintroduced to their native habitat. To avoid further Animal-American enslavement, the remaining gift package has been revised.) FOUR hours of recorded whale songs, THREE deconstructionist poets, TWO Sierra Club calendars printed on recycled processed tree carcasses. AND a Spotted Owl activist chained to an old-growth pear tree ______________________________________________________ Get Your Private, Free Email at http://www.hotmail.com ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 21 Dec 1999 12:13:44 EST From: Siresorrow@aol.com Subject: Re: They're Cutting Down Trees Recipe (NJC) (MD) In a message dated 12/20/99 9:52:22 PM Eastern Standard Time, wallykai@interserver.com.ar writes: << when you were kids, did you ever borrow your daddy's lighter to ignite your farts? >> once in the boy scouts on a camping trip, we smoked a ton of green hash in the woods and this one guy with us had a parka jacket on. this is circa 1975 and the parka i speak of is a big nylon jacket with a fur trimmed hood that zippers all the way up. anyway, he had a rip in the back of his coat, where the arm met the sholder and i lit a fire cracker and stuck it in the tear in his sleeve and when it went off, it blew his entire jacket sleeve off the jacket. it just blew out all the orange lining. but the guy said like five times, you blew off my fuc-in arm....we just layed down in the woods and laughed and laughed and laughed. hash, zippo lighters, marlboros, and firecrackers. good times. pat ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 21 Dec 1999 09:19:25 -0800 From: "rick novosel" Subject: Re: Do 3 Threads Make a Braid? It's just the thought that someone could be crass enough to invade someone else's private space, go through their stuff, throw it around and so on, treat it like shit when you worked hard for it. Interesting that they took the Shadows and Light video, though... hmm - a burglar with taste? Naah - what do you suppose the resale value of the video might be? Enough to buy some crack? Maybe he's going to give it to his mum for Christmas? The thing that really irked me when our house was broken into was that the bastard broke my daughter's piggy bank (!!!) and took all her money - including the pennies!! And then left the back door open and it was snowing outside... So the cops come by and take a report - they even took fingerprints - but of course, they never catch these jerks. The kids were scared for ages that the robber would come back and steal THEM. I'd love to get hold of these jerks, so I could look 'em right in the eye and say, "You want money?
