(It's obvious from these questions I know nothing at all about guitar playing so, all you knowledgeable folks, please bear with me.) When you write numbers such as these, do you mean to press down the 3rd, 4th and 5th strings (from the top for a right-handed player) in the second space from the tuning pegs? That would seem easy enough, but then the second set of numbers must sound a lot different and need a contortionist's ability to hold down. Or is that easy also? Your little finger holds down the two 5s? The notation I used is one Sue and Marian use on the Joni guitar pages. Often, you'll see guitar tablature (which is kind of like sheet music for guitar) written vertically instead of horizontally. You read from low to high, so from the bottom E string to the high E string. The notes in standard guitar tuning (I'm smiling remembering the chuckle as John van Teil asked in anyone had a guitar in standard tuning at JoniFest - but I digress) are: E-A-D-G-B-E In tablature, this appears as: E B G D A E A diagram of an A chord (in standard tuning) 0-0-2-2-2-0 would look like this (if this doesn't line up, change the font to some variation of Courier) E---|---| B---|-X-| G---|-X-| D---|-X-| A---|---| E---|---| This tells you where to put your fingers, but not which fingers to put where. Although I don't see this done all that often, I'll diagram the 'what finger goes where' here: E---|---| B---|-3-| G---|-2-| D---|-1-| A---|---| E---|---| You can, however play with 'fingerings' that you're most comfortable with. <> Yes, that's what this means. <> 5-7-7-6-5-5 Many of us remember the excruciating pain associated with learning how to play barre chords, which is what this is. And based on a previous discussion about some of our early instruments, it was painful indeed. Here's a diagram of what's happening with the second voicing of the chord, telling where to place what fingers: E---|---|---|---|-1-|---|---| B---|---|---|---|-1-|---|---| G---|---|---|---|-1-|-2-|---| D---|---|---|---|-1-|---|-3-| A---|---|---|---|-1-|---|-4-| E---|---|---|---|-1-|---|---| The trick here is that you lay the index finger across the entire fretboard, so that rather than using the tip of the finger, you use the entire finger. And you apply pressure so that the strings don't buzz. It takes some getting used to. Joni uses barre chord shapes, but often plays just the barre, like 5-5-5-5-5-5. Does that help? Just wondering. That is interesting. I really didn't ask much about her and only heard that she is a fairly well-known artist. But she could also be a lawyer. The lawyer at my firm was an art gallery director in New York before he went into law so maybe their paths crisscrossed long ago and that's how they became friends. It is also possible that she is a non-lawyer expert in art law and has the credentials to be doing a stint as a professor there. She was an unwanted blue moggie kitten. She came to live with us and the dogs. From the beginning she was quite an individual, arrogant and cantankerous. She never did make friends with the dogs, considering them beneath her in intelligence and species. At around nine months of age she disappered out of the window of our flat-on the 1st floor. A few hours later she was calling loudly to be let back in, even tho she had been ignoring my calls to her to come back in! In she came in a most peculiar state-meowing as if in pain and with her back dipped deeply near the tail and with her back legs crounched. It looked as if she had been hit by a car. Off to the vet we rush in the ealry hours. The vet was a blonde Australian who examined her and started to laugh. Upon enquiry as to what was so funny, we were told that she had 'been screwed rotten'. Nine weeks later Claudia produced 4 kitten by ceaser, only two of which survived. At around 4 years of age she disappeared, again out of the window. We searched high and low for her but to no avail. Six weeks to the day of her disappearance, a nieghbour knocked on our door to ask if we had a grey cat. We replied that yes we did bu that she had been missing for 6 weeks. Our neighbour then took us to his shed where we found Claudia in a pitful state. She was nothing but skin and bone. Obviously she had been trapped in that shed for the six weeks. Rain water must have kept her alive. She came in and ate heartily and she was then taken to the vet and given a clean bill of health. Claudia preferrred John to me. I am the one who gives pills and flea sprays(which she hated and would pee on me) and injections etc. Her place at night was on the bed and woe betide any dog or cat who tried to take her spot. Jealousy was her domain. We alwyas had to lock her out of the room if we made love for she would stalk around us, growling and yowling. As soon as we had settled down we had to open the door to let her back in whereupon she would jump immediately onto the bed and rub al around and yowl. Most strangely, if one was alone and satisfying oneself, she would get really mad. I think she was a reincarnated Nun. Claudia died today at 5.26pm after a very short illness. - -- "It is better to be hated for what you are than to be loved for what you are not." ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 8 Dec 1999 18:49:15 EST From: Kleronomos@aol.com Subject: ebay bootlegs hi folks... just a note about that CD-R (which is a recordable CD... you can duplicate things to CD on your computer). The reason it vanished from the listings is because eBay pulled it. It's a violation of their Terms of Service to offer ANY bootlegged material, whether it's vinyl, tape, or CDR. They will also NOT allow anyone to sell promotional CDs, which are labeled "not to be sold" etc. They do slip through from time to time. A community like eBay depends on sharp-eyed folks to alert them if material is questionable. I'd like to think that the listers did that for them on this one. And may that dealer get what he deserves some day... a good lawsuit! I'm a big eBay fan, and have bought a lot of stuff, and sold a few items there. Generally speaking the gold CDs are mastered from the original recording media, have better and more dense information content (at the acoustic level), and just plain sound better. I just got "Blue", and the differences (in my somewhat revealing system) are very real, and enjoyable. Regular CDs, especially earlier re-releases, really do not have sound that is all that great-the mass market doesn't demand it. Even HDCDs are not that terrific, especially since few of us have HDCD players. Plus, their portrayal of the original music doesn't quite compare to vinyl LPs, which some us us still use. There's that old joke...the tourist asks the New Yorker "How do I get to Carnegie Hall?" , he says "Practice, practice practice" Joni's playing, and her whole approach to guitar is unique and innovative, yet isolating at the same time. By that I mean that due to it's uniqueness and because it is modal in nature it would be much easier for another musician to play along with her than for her to play what someone else is playing. It would be almost impossible to play some things in some of those tunings. I suspect that Joni's grasp of music theory is tenuous at best. She is an instict player who has sounded out and created her own path on guitar (& piano & dulcimer) Clapton is a blues based player. Blues is very simple musically, at least in it's purest form. It stays in the same key, it's improvisational, and it's based on a pentatonic 5 note scale. Blues players usually know very little music theory, and play instictually. Lead guitar is usually based on movable patterns, in other words, once you know a blues scale, you can move it around the neck depending on what key the song is in. Taylor is from the folk tradition, which often involves cyclic right hand fingerpicking patterns. Also (but not neccesarily)open tunings > Is there a method that you would recommend to learn? Most guitarists probably do not know them, but it is certainly a good thing to know. How useful it is depends. If you want to be a jazz player, it would be essential. When you get into barre chords it pays to know at least all the notes on the two lowest (5th & 6th) strings, because most barre chords are based on them. > > I always wanted to REALLY learn how to play. When a person does a guitar > solo he is basically just playing the melody, the notes, and not chords, > right? When a person does a solo, they are playing notes that are compatable with the key the music is in. They may be playing a scale, the melody, a countermelody, several notes together (a chord or part of one). I know Joni is the exception to the rule too because not only does > she play chords and melody but also rhythm too! Generally any folk-fingerpicking approach combines playing the bass notes with some sort of a fill pattern in a certain rhythm. That doesn't always mean the person knows what chords and notes they are playing. > Do you guys think that lessons are necessary? Since you are knocking on the door with all these great questions, I think finding the right teacher who can explain them in more detail, and give you tools for exploring them would be great. And unlike a book, a teacher can show you how to use them, how they sound, etc. The direction (or directions!) you decide to go in will become clear as you get into it. Your little finger > holds down the two 5s? > > Debra Shea The second chord is a movable major bar chord. Think of it as a first position E chord, with your index finger taking the place of the guitar's nut. You can move this chord to any fret, and the note under your index finger on the 6th string is the name of the chord. For instance, move it to the third fret, and the 6th string at the third fret is a G note, therefore you are playing a G major chord. Change the chord to an Em type shape, and it is a G minor (at the 3rd fret). The same principle can be applied to other first position chords. The chord at the top of the page, 0-0-2-2-2-0 , a first position A, can be moved to any fret, using your index finger to bar across the strings. The note under your index finger on the 5th string (the root of the A chord) is name of the chord, i.e. 3rd fret= C major. It would look like 3-3-5-5-5-3 or how about a C minor 3-3-5-5-4-3 or a C minor seventh 3-3-5-3-4-3 You can make bar chords from 1st position C, G, and D as well, but the E and A types are the most common and easiest to deal with. Jmdlers also informed Reprise Records and Joni's management of the illegal eBay listing of BSN by Stooz. I think what bugged me most about this was that the bootleg was trying to be sold a full two months before the release date of the Limited Edition. With the way the price skyrocketed, (I bet his eyes popped when he saw the bidding) it could almost be expected people would start burning copies as quick as they could get them out and packaged for sale. Two months of this kind of thing could potentially have a serious impact on Joni's sales. Sure, most of us jmdlers are going to know what's going on and wait for the real thing, both because of simple ethics but also our sincere caring for Joni, but who's to say about the other fans who aren't quite so much in the know. It was mostly in the timing, much more than Joni's loss of royalities during illegal pre-release sales (although that would suck too), that got me riled up. Because she could have been screwed from at least three different ways. Screwed out of royalties before the actual release (who's to say this eBay listing wasn't one of a boatload he had.) Screwed by potentially lower sales numbers when it is released (that all important first week of sales Billboard and others go by). Screwed by probably inferior product (copies of the bootlegs) being scrutinized as the authentic product. It just goes on and on with Reprise and especially Joni, the artist who brought this music into the world for us, getting the short end of the stick....again. I mean it's one thing for Joni to be asking a room full of persons at the LACE exibit, many who have industry ties of some degree, if they've heard the new one, but another thing would be to find out Joe Blow has already got a boot of it. I guess this one touches me already because Joni is clearly so excited about it. Asking everybody if they cried when they heard the new version of A Case Of You and all. Isn't that adorable. ;-) It would break my heart if she got deprived of her just desserts again. Sorry for the rant. I bet Catgirl and other jmdlers jumped into eBays face to remove the illegal auction.
