I just don't get it... > catgirl Well, this whole thing, of course, got my legal beagle instinct going today when I first saw it. I eliminated the possibility of it being a promo copy because I don't think they are out yet (but I could be wrong - maybe some have gone out early without the final artwork), or that somehow, with the copies of it that are already apparently circulating among Joni's friends, there's been a weak link. I really cannot see anyone close to her pawning off a copy to a small-time album seller on eBay. for one thing, if one of her friends needed the money they probably have a lot more valuable items they could sell on eBay themselves, but more importantly, this kind of sale is big time illegal and a true "bootleg" because it is outright counterfieting for profit, the sale of actual, releaseable product, as opposed to the sale for profit of a CD-R of say Joni's Jazz, which is not official product, and for which the law tends to be unclear. I can't see anyone close to Joni committing a Federal crime for a few measly bucks. My guess, and this is just a guess, is that maybe some employee in the manufacturing process at the record plant or elsewhere got it into unscrupulous hands. I'm reminded of the stories you hear of employees who work in "One Hour Photo" type outlets in Hollywood who sell juicy celebrity photos they've developed to the National Enquirer and other tabloids. Kakki, pondering putting the Jonifest Box Set on eBay ;-) (JUST KIDDING!!) ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 08 Dec 1999 01:59:53 -0500 From: Jason Long Subject: Aimee Mann/Magnolia (NJC) Since there are a few Aimee Mann fans on the list, I just thought that I would mention that the soundtrack for the film Magnolia was released today, and features nine recordings by her (one cover and eight originals, the majority of them previously unreleased). The soundtrack is exceptional. This is some of Aimee's finest work, in my opinion. I am completely in awe over how good "Save Me," "Wise Up," "You Do," and "Deathly" all are. There's also an instrumental version of "Nothing Is Good Enough" that is gorgeous. The liner notes for the soundtrack were written by the film's writer/director, Paul Thomas Anderson, and are one of the greatest testimonies to Aimee's talents that I've read. He talks about how he wanted to write an adaption of Aimee's songs for the screen and how the material she had been working on at the time was expressing all of the things he was thinking about, only articulating them better than he could. He even admits to ripping off a key line of the film from the song "Deathly" and how he built one of the characters around it. This soundtrack and movie will hopefully bring Aimee's music to a much wider audience. There's already an Oscar buzz surrounding the song "Save Me," and many feel that her nomination is a sure bet. There's also a short piece on the soundtrack in the current issue of Time, if anyone's interested. Joni Mitchell! I was wrong!! Joni Mitchell!! (he said her name three times).>> This is what scares me about *news* reporters! Years ago I was challenged that *Woodstock* was written by CSN&Y. When I showed the guy the credits on LOTC he still insisted that CSN&Y were the authors. What could I say but *Whatever you say.* People believe what they need to believe in order to feel that they have some sort of control. Sometimes it's an innocent mistake like confusing Joni's songs for Judy Collins, Joan Baez or CSN&Y. What scares me is contemplating how very often reporters are wrong & nobody speaks out to correct them! Has anyone checked out his other auctions on eBay? It looks like he has a load of similar product from a bunch of other artists. Make one wonder about his source(s) for this stuff (and also his boldness in putting it all out there for sale). At any rate, eBay should be notified - they have definitely outlawed these kinds of sales. Since most of us check into the Joni pages there on a regular basis, we should be able to "patrol the terrority" for awhile.
