They are terrific. Also in the magazine is a profile and interview of Michael Tilson Thomas, famed musical director of the San Francisco Symphony. "In that city, he is as well known as a rock star" is what the magazine says about him, claiming that he "turned a conservative and slightly fusty orchestra into the most adventurous, inspiring musical organization in the country." Tilson offers high praise for Joni, as evidenced by the following: RS: "What American popular music has stayed with you for a while?" MTT: "From the sheer spinning of a phrase, from the musical standpoint, there's no question that Sarah Vaughan, Ella Fitzgerald, Smokey Robinson, James Brown were inspiring. Also, there was Laura Nyro and Joni Mitchell--colossally important." RS: "Do you like Joni Mitchell's words or her music?" MTT: "Everything. I just think it's altogether fabulous. I know those songs. When you talk about music that really stays with you, that is important for most of your life when you need to hang on to something, all that music is in my heart, along with Schubert and Monteverdi. It's all there." - --Rolling Stone 828/829, Dec. 16-23, 1999 ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 7 Dec 1999 03:47:44 -0500 From: "Lisa Peakes" Subject: Re: Miscellany regarding the art exhibit <<.....for which we co-won the Grammy for best album art/packaging....>> Wow, Kakki - you REALLY identify with your subject! Aaaiiiiiii!! This was definitely one of my worser typos! My eyesight is often shot by the end of the day and it all becomes a blur at times. Thank for giving me the chance to correct it before someone starts thinking I'm appropriating Joni's identity - LOL Kakki ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 07 Dec 1999 03:40:01 +0000 From: Chuck Eisenhardt Subject: Seasonal music Some holiday music I require this time of year: Emmylou Harris' 'Light of the Stable' (1980) - I'm not sure it this ever made it to CD. Really beautiful. I especially love the Ricky Skaggs tune 'Angel Eyes'. Or how about the backing vocals on the title tune - Dolly, Neil Young and Ronstadt (precursing the Trio albums). I play Vince Guaraldi's 'A Charlie Brown Christmas' constantly this time of year. Other's have mentioned Lennon's 'Happy Xmas/War is Over. Me too. I'll take the whole B side of the Shaved Fish compilation, actually! Tack, but fun: The Phil Spector Christmas Album. Again I am not sure I've seen this on CD. Phil is on the cover dressed as Santa. He's wearing a couple of buttons saying 'Back to Mono'. The Ronettes do 'I Saw Mommy Kissing Santa Claus'. Phil sings Silent Night! I have a couple of 'Christmas in Germany' albums which you'd have had to grow up hearing every year, but they never fail to invoke for me the magic and innocence of my childhood Christmases. My Grandmother singing 'Stille Nacht, Heilige Nacht' (Silent Night) in German. And the Bach 'Es ist ein ros entsprungen' (Lo, how a Rose). Perhaps what I like most about the season is that is IS so musical. I tend to whip out all the perennial favorite music even if it's not quite Christmas music...we sing a lot at the family celebration including the annual massacre of 'Twelve Days of Christmas...I expect I'll play carols at my Mom's nursing home this year...in the last few years at our annual 'alt-family' Solstice celebration we've taken to a raveup version of O Holy Night (complete with falling on the knees) and the ever popular 'Disco Wenceslas'. Happy season! So I am trying again. The SCJoniGuy wrote: >No need to apologize, John...Lord knows, we probably >carry on with a lot of threads that are a mystery to >you Aussies, so post away! Thanks, Bob. Besides some musicians who have been discussed, I remember being completely mystified for a while by the discussion of “The Blair Witch Project” some time ago. Though I soon gathered enough to realise that it was a film, it is only now that the hype has reached our shores that I am fully cognisant of the background details. They even showed a documentary about the Blair Witch legend and the disappearance of the students on TV the other night and the makers of the film are now in Australia I think. The film opens in theatres here in a week or so. I’m still not sure, though, whether I really want to see it! And, speaking of films, Jason asked: >Have you seen Ronin? John Frankenheimer's 1998 >espionage action thriller with DeNiro and Jean Reno? >Besides being my favourite DVD, the car chases (and >there are several) are simply breathtaking....and >they were all down in real-time without SFX, too, >with Grand Prix drivers. No, I haven’t seen this one, though I do recollect my son telling me it was a “must see”. Looks like another trip to the video library. A recommendation from two film buffs as respected as Jason and Andrew (my son) should not be ignored! (Steve McQueen, I understand, did all his own driving in “Bullitt” and was also known to drive the odd racing car I think.) Oh, and Jason, could you post your web site address again? I thought I had it book-marked but have discovered it’s not - and I’ve deleted the digest in which it appeared. Thanks. Many viruses are hoaxes. HOWEVER, you should never open an executable file (one whose extension is .exe) that you get in email. EVER. The virus Jim mentioned (thanks Jim!) is in an .exe file - don't open the file. You'd also best avoid any files whose extension is .DLL (altho' it's unlikely that you'd get a file like this.) I know I've mentioned to a few of you (in private correspondence) that when I was 17 I had a son. His mother and I have been together for very little of his life but have remained friends, even after my coming out to her. I've spent the last 5 years of my life raising him with and with our respective partners. But in October my son got very sick. It's been a roller coaster ride since then and we're still not out. I have finally regained some normal sense of life. My brother did read some email for me during this time. He informs me, however, that the box got full and he suspects that some was erased. This being the case, I'd ask anyone who I owe stuff to-please email me and I'll get it to you. (Everett, I've cc'd this to you to let you know that I have your copy of 'SW' and will get it out to you. I'm very sorry.) Finally, I remember how great everyone was when I emailed regarding the Matthew Shepard memorial. I'd ask if everyone could pray (if that's what you do) for my son. His name is Hunter. Thank you. and I'm sorry to anyone who I've left hanging. Thank you so much for accepting it. :~D From Joni's talk in interviews about reworking her paintings and from the layered look of her colors, I'd always assumed she was using oil paints. But, maybe not. > more information in the brochure for the tour. It does appear like she may > have used acrylics in the new paintings. Or maybe acrylics just for the expanses of snow, since it's so hard to keep white oil paint from eventually turning yellow. The oil used to bind pigments together combines better or is hidden by the more colorful pigments. But when it's just pure or lightly-tinted white and it's applied thickly, there's LOTS of oil in it and nothing to hide its yellowish color. This is one of those technical challenges of painting, an especially tough one. > The attorney at my office who was there and a friend of Amy Adler had some > very > interesting things to say about the whole show which I will relate when I > gather my thoughts on it a bit more. My thought was to suggest that an example of e-mail lists be included in the time capsule, and to mention the JMDL as one that is especially full: friendly, interesting, timely, moving and sometimes very funny. As a matter of fact, my stance has been it may well buy her some extra meals or at least a few more shavings of truffles. Really, think about it: someone buys the preview and is blown away by her works. May not own anything else and thus go out and buy her entire oeuvre. May wonder what the finished product will be and buy that. Others may listen to the boot and start in on their own Joni search. The seller may start pondering about the morality of usurping a bootleg and reform. The whole story is not yet played out. I believe that if Joni is using fallible human beings to put together her work, bootlegging is the risk she runs; just as we all risk breaking our hearts when we put it out on the free market. I don't think that this is at the level of counterfeit goods yet and merely the "don't-forget-that-we-don't-know-the-whole-story-behind-it boot. I must have re-read it 10 times to understand what I was reading. The guy definitely says it is a CD-R but what really amazes me is he is advertising a "mint insert" - what- the new art work?! It wasn't even ready when we saw it last Wednesday and the guy has had the ad up for a couple days already. I checked his other auctions and he definitely has a large stock of rare CDs and albums for sale. I highly doubt it's an authorized promo copy - they are not even ready yet as far as I know. Mindboggling. I'm assuming that the lister who is bidding on it wants to take it off the "market". I think there must be a few homespun copies floating around out there because even Joni herself was asking several people if they'd heard it yet and how did they like it, but this is gross. But not to worry too much because if people do decide to make more CD-R copies who is really going to buy them - the real fans are going to want the real thing and don't mind waiting another few weeks for it. I purchased a few posters and a few CD-R's (at outrageous prices), but they were gifts for a very dear friend who was as much of a Joni fan as I am. I didn't give any thoughts as to "Is Joni getting cheated out of royalties?". I was more concerned about giving a gift to a friend that would make him extremely happy. Since joining the JMDL, I've changed my thinking. Everyone that has posted on this subject has very valid points. I have not purchased any Joni CD-R's on ebay knowing that Joni (as well as other artist) are getting ripped off. However, there are still a lot of people that are Joni fans and don't know about this wonderful group. They don't know about our nonprofit tape trees, and how we just want to share Joni's music.
