Anne ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 06 Dec 1999 10:51:32 -0500 From: dsk Subject: Which Joni album in time capsule? Yesterday's New York Times Magazine was all about the time capsule the Times is putting together to be opened 1000 years from now. Readers can submit their suggestions for written words, sounds, images, and where in New York City the capsule should be buried. Here's the URL. If you're not registered with the Times you may be forced to do that first. Then scroll down and on the left is the Times Capsule box. http://www.nytimes.com/library/magazine/home/index.html A Joni album should definitely be in it. I'm leaning toward Court and Spark since to me it's the one that best describes contemporary life: the desire for freedom, the ambition, the anxiety, the loneliness, and there's also the jazz influence, a little rock n roll and some humor too. And it sounds great. I'm listening to it for the second time this morning (after not hearing it for years), and Same Situation is still giving me chills of the "oh yeah" kind. And Twisted still makes me smile. So even though I wouldn't vote for C&S as my favorite, it seems like a good representative of Joni's work for the time capsule. What do y'all think? Which one would you choose? After some discussion, let's so overwhelm the Times with our opinions they can't resist putting some Joni-music in the capsule. On Thursday I heard PM Dawn doing 'River' on the radio- a very stunning light jazz version; Jobim-esque guitar, calypso rythms and very little keys. Is this on the JM Tribute CD? or on his own CD? I recieved CD tree#2 (-thanks to Catgirl and Steve Springer,) which prompts this next question - many of us have see the goddess on tour in '83 on the 'Refuge' tour. Am I the only one who remembers her doing 'A Case of You' on dulcimer, of course, but with Russell Ferante on piano as well? This was July 3rd, 1983 at Alpine Valley, East Troy, WI. (Oh Les, I meant to put this concert on "Joni History" this year, but I was in NYC.) Did anyone else hear this at another show on this tour? besides myself and Gloria and Terri-my two friends who went with me- and anyone else who was at Alpine? When I heard it I was just about in tears...the audience was sooo quiet-mesmerised-no one moved or even breathed, it was so beautiful! I was so hoping someone had captured this on tape... I held my breath as I put this CD tree on, much to my dismay, it was just her... which is still way cool, but... Talk to Me! Did you notice the smell of oil when you were close to the paintings? If not and they're acrylics, then yellowing is not such a worry and there are all sorts of mediums that can be added to the paint to get different effects, such as shininess or glitteriness. It tends to create a rather brittle > surface so it's usually mixed with some titanium white, but in this case maybe > not. This is interesting because Joni has yet another "Snowy Landscape" painting that is just gorgeous but I've never seen it before on any album cover art. It looks like it was done around the same time as the other snowy mountain paintings seen in the Turbulent Indigo package. I saw it at the tapings and also at LACE the other night and it has more turquoise, rather than indigo blue in it. It looks like it was done mostly with a palette knife and the paint is really spread on thick. It is also one of the more luminescent paintings. I did notice the other night that the whites in this painting are yellowing and also look brittle, so maybe she did blend the two. The paint is also very shiny on this one and it looks almost "shellaced". I must admit that the only thing that disappointed me at LACE was the lighting on the paintings. At the tapings, there were hung against either a turquoise-green or black backround and most of them seemed to be individually spotlighted. This really made each of them glow like jewels. At LACE they are just hanging on white walls with only the harsh, overhead fluroescent-type lighting and it really dulls them down, IMO. I think the only painting that was individually spotlighted was the new album cover one that "greets" you when you enter the gallery. I assume that when she does her tour, she will have more control over the lighting and presentation of the paintings. It is based around artists such as Tori Amos, Bjork, Pj Harvey, Kate Bush, AniDifranco, Jewel, Sinead O'Connor, Madonna, Alanis Morissette and erm, Joni... I am big fan of Joni's, and for the first issue, it would be nice to have an article on her because her contribution to music has been so great. I'm looking for someone who is willing to come on board and write this feature for me, please. I'm looking for some original writing about Joni and not simply a profile. At the same time, this is not exclusively a Joni fanzine and so it must be a good read for a non-Joni fan. It would be good to have a look at the stages of her career - don't worry about the length for the moment. It really is up to you. And all fanzine profits go to charity. Tori Amos set up the 'RAINN' charity in the U.S. and so in the UK, we have to find some sort of equivalent. But rest assured that the money, if there is any, will go to a good cause. I'm 99.9% sure that she used oils in this painting, but now I'm going to give it the smell test when I go back again to decipher the "cartoon coaster" ;-) There were no details at all about the paintings and now I'm so curious as to any of her special painting "tricks" - maybe there will be more information in the brochure for the tour. It does appear like she may have used acrylics in the new paintings. Speaking of shellac, my father actually had an ancient stash of the real thing that he guarded like gold. I occasionally snuck into it and used it experimentally on a a few projects and it always darkened/yellowed the colors. I'm definitely going to pore over the paintnigs more when I see them again. > I do hope some of these snowy landscapes are in the summer show so I can give > them my own sight and up-close-and-personal smell test. :-) I'm sure they will be included. > Yeah, it sure does since the full light spectrum isn't in those fluorescent > lights. I had the first 3 LPs and unfortunately got rid of them. I think "Cold Blue Steel & Sweet Fire" was on "Fearless." I was fortunate enough to find "The Best of Tim Curry" on CD at a used CD store (it's out of print now). It does have Joni's "Cold Blue Steel & Sweet Fire" on the album. That's right because she wouldn't even be in bed yet or even thinking about coffee. Besides being a really fantastic and fun person, he is a close friend of Joni and has been her art director since Turbulent Indigo, for which we co-won the Grammy for best album art/packaging. He also produced her Hits and Misses promo film which is fantastic but I think has only been seen by record people. It is a wonderful interview of Joni at her place in British Columbia and shows her singing and playing out on the cliff overlooking the ocean there. Robbie was going to give it to me the other night but couldn't find it in his piles of stuff (I can relate ;-) I'll try to get it one of these days. He also did all the art direction for the HDCD re-releases of her albums and, of course, Hits and Misses, TTT and the upcoming Both Sides Now album. When I first met him he was wanting to get away from art and more into film and was taking acting classes and appearing in a few films. Now he is working on his production of an Anita O'Day movie. He is a very good and generous person. A few people have asked me about some of the people who were at the reception and whether those being rather obnoxious were fans. No - the few people we met who I would say were "just fans" were also very shy about approaching her. I got the full show out on the back balcony and from what I could see and hear, the people who were elbowing in seemed to be more like "a friend of a friend of one of your friends" or somehow tangentially related to someone in the Biz. I heard a lot of "Joni, remember me, I met you back when you were with Guerin" or "Joni, remember me, I'm a friend who used to work with a friend of your friend Joe Schmoe" or "Joni, remember me, we used to know each other, I'd like you to meet my daughter." The real schmoozerinos. What was kind of funny is that one guy asked where Guerin was that night and whether he was on the new album (heehee). I forget what Joni said but she was really very accomodating and gracious to everyone. I can tell you all without equivocation, that our little JMDL group behaved ourselves absolutely perfectly, especially in comparison to the majority there, it seemed. But it was a colorful crowd in its' own way ;-) Kakki NP: Joni - Sex Kills (How L.A. ;-) ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 6 Dec 1999 22:24:17 EST From: SCJoniGuy@aol.com Subject: Re: Joni concert photos 1995 Robbert was playing: << NP: Astrid Seriese "Seriese Live!" - excellent live album of Dutch born singer. I picked up my ticket at the box office and peeked through a side door, just in time to see Tom Rush doing his setup and soundcheck. I talked with some other early-arrivers about Tom and Joni and other artists like Tom Waits (Hi Bob M!) and Leo Kotke. I recruited a new jmdler (Hi Patty O'Day!) who says she has some heretofore unknown recording of Joni at the Main Point in the late 60's. We'll see :-) As showtime approached, the doors opened and the opening notes of Sunny Sunday greeted us. When Sex Kill followed, I knew that I had made it to singer-songwriter heaven. Being the second audience member through the door, I found my seat in the front row, on the center aisle, less than 4 feet from the performer's microphone. I spent the rest of the pre-show time talking with my neighbors about Tom, Joni, Sandy Denny and Phil Ochs. The emcee (a stand-in, as it turned out) came out, the sounds of Joni faded, and the opening act, a very talented singer-songwriter named Patty Shea appeared onstage. She opened on guitar, accompanied by an upright bass. After 2 songs, she sat down at the piano and played her heart out. After 3 piano numbers, the emcee said that Tom would be immediately following her and would be playing 2 sets, with a break in between them. Tom and his accompanyist, a piano- and very small saxophone (soprano?)- playing and harmonizing guy named Sam came onstage, greeted with the same warm reception you'd expect a long lost friend to receive. Did I mention that at the ripe (not quite old) age of 45, I was among the younger half of the audience (by my own estimation, based upon the appearance of my fellow audience members)? Tom had 3 guitars onstage, and started with a visibly well worn one (identified by the guy next to me as "an old Martin") that was missing some wood under the 2 highest strings, just below the sound hole. The first set: 1) San Francisco Bay Blues 2) Jazz Man 3) A Cowboy's Pacau (about a coyote shhot in Gilette WY, near his current home) 4) Urge For Going (done from the male perspective) A change of guitars, this one labled Epiphone, led into 5) Panama Limited They took a break, and after about 15 minutes, Gene Shay took the microphone and "sang the praises" of Tom Rush, recalling the old days when Tom would come to Philadelphia for Thanksgiving weekend and play the Main Point. Tom Rush took the stage for his second set: 1) Drift Away 2) A song that Tom described as one that gains meaning as he gets older. This song was in the style of John Prine, and in my own mind, could have easily been titled "An Elder Moment" 3) One Good Man 4) What An Old Lover Knows 5) Drop Down Mama 6) The River Song 7) Ladies Love Outlaws 8) No Regrets 9) Rockport Sunday (instrumental) Tom then acknowledged Gene Shay for the role he's played in "our kind of music" 10) Lost My Drivin' Wheel Tom and Sam left the stage to sustained applause and returned a moment later for their encore: 1) Child's Song (a song that I've always loved, which has new meaning for me now that I have a daughter away at college) 2) Who Do You Love (during which Tom broke a string, and while Sam kept up the beat on the piano, Tom installed a new string and picked right back up) I hung around after the show with my shopping bag of albums and cds for Tom to sign. He very graciously did so, and I thanked him on behalf of the JMDL for being among the very first people to record Joni's music. It was an evening not soon to be forgotten. If you get the opportunity to see him perform, please don't miss it. You won't regret it.
