It's about a Jewish family and takes place in 1967. I was very surprised to see the camera pan from left to right over the Song To A Seagull album cover, not once, but on two separate occasions, in the bedroom scenes with Jacob, the eldest son, and his girlfriend. In the first bedroom scene, it's easier to see because the pan is slower. I think there are three bedroom scenes and the pans occur in the first and third. Thank you for the wonderful accounts because I felt the excitement again like last year when Joni was touring! Every day a new account of the tour would be shared and we would experience the thrill again! I felt the same way reading your accounts of Joni's art showing. I feel the renewed Joni excitement in the air. Maybe it's the Christmas excitement coming through along with the new CD coming out soon. I just hope we don't have to wait as long as we did last time around! I'm also excited to be a recipe contributor to the cookbook. I am just so happy and excited that Joni got the cookbook! Yeah, Marian!!!!! As we were getting our Christmas decorations out the other day I came across my "Joni angels" as my husband calls them. I guess we didn't need all those empty carbs. Annnyyyywayyy.....the point is (Southerner's just hafta ramble), my husband is a dessert freak and I, too, missed scarfing down an occasional bowl of Edies French Silk ice cream (yum). I discovered stevia (herbal sweetener with no carbs nor calories), and for the first time in my life made a cheesecake. I customized it with all sorts of spices and such, and made it for Rick's family at Thanksgiving, and for Steve and Pearl when I visited them over the holidays. Maybe everyone was just being kind, but they seemed to like it, and I'm thrilled that I was able to put some stuff in a the oven and have it come out edible. Now, I feel like I have something to contribute. I just have to give it a name. If you do have a 2nd edition, I would definitely send in my "sugar free" but really fattening cheese cake recipe. >I'm really very sorry, Bev Your gracious apology is accepted and much appreciated. I can imagine how much time and effort it took to produce the cookbook. When I was "managing" the writing contest two years ago, it really was a lot of work, and I remember how thrilled I was as each entry rolled in. A ton of effort went into each and every contest entry and I was proud to be a part of a project which allowed list members to showcase their collective talent. The cookbook, in addition to providing a creative outlet for listers, is something tangible - a reference book, both useful to cooks and would be cooks, as well as providing a place to find out fun facts about Jimdlers. I would like to someday have a copy. The price you mentioned does not seem outrageous. I spent a month's salary flying out to California to see Joni last year. Thanks Kakki and to everyone who posted regarding their encounters with Joni last week. Every single one was a joy to read! S'Wonderful, wonderful stuff. I am happy you had the chance to meet her! I pray someday I will be that lucky!!! I am sure I would be struck dumb and speechless to see her face to face, but it would be a moment I would cherish all my life. I would love to look into her eyes and say, 'Thank you.' All of you are so blessed and lucky. I am so happy for you/ In regards to those luminous whites in Join's snowscape from TTT, I suspect she may have used titanium white to do the paintings, simply because it is the more available white used today. Actually, the luminous effects of the old masters is from the use of Flake White, known then as lead white. It is the most reflective of the whites and was used to reflect the light that passed through a color glaze back to the eye with the greatest possible brilliance. Rembrandt, Vermeer, Van Eyck, all put this pigment to use to great advantage. I always get confused on this but I do believe Flake White is the most opaque white. It has great covering power. Zinc white tends to lighten colors without changing their hue. Or maybe it's the other way around... Alas, with all the fuss over lead in paint, Flake white is near impossible to find on store shelves now. I wonder if she were able avail where I have not in this regard. I can't wait to see her paintings in person! With the dying of teaching tradition techniques in painting, many artist fail to take advantage of this information in producing their work. A shame. I love how Joni 'reaches out' musically and artistically from other styles and traditions and uses them as they suit her in the creation of new form. I assume that these paintings are touring to Saskatoon? I plan to be there in the hope that once more she will make an appearance!!! The idea of seeing her work in the town she grew up in will make the experience all the richer. My fingers are crossed on that one. As with everyone, I am soooooo pyched to hear the new CD. The limited edition will be an absolute must!!! Well, Mike D., are you still as disinterested in this new project as before, or have we whetted your appetite a bit? It's pretty generic (by our standards) but I thought I post it anyway for posterity ;-) Kakki ****** LOS ANGELES, 5 November 1999 -- Tri-Annuale (Part 2): "Amy Adler curates Joni Mitchell" opens at the Los Angeles Contemporary Exhibitions on Wednesday December 1, 1999 from 6:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. The exhibit will run through Thursday 23 December 1999. Guest curator, artist Amy Adler, collaborates with artist/musician Joni Mitchell to create an exhibition of Mitchell's paintings for the second exhibition in our year-long, three-part series. For photographs please call Lora McPhail at 323-957-1777. Many of us have seen the paintings of Joni Mitchell. Rather, to be more accurate, many of us are familiar with the graphic images that cover Mitchell's albums and CDs. Guest curator Amy Adler addresses Tri-Annuale (Part 2) as an opportunity to exhibit these images, which exist for most of us as widely distributed reproductions, and place them as unique objects within the context of a gallery. Unlike replicated museum works which also have popular/commercial destinations, Mitchell's works have not been attached to a point of origination. This presentation seeks to recontextualize and bring form to Mitchell's work and to create a situation for questioning our recollection and understanding of a very public image when we are presented "a posteriori" with the very private object it mimics. Mitchell's compositions utilize intensive, saturated color and a deliberateness of line which translate a complex relationship of gesture, music, humor, history, and a profound love of painting. This exhibition presents a collection of twelve rarely shown paintings, with an emphasis on portraiture and landscape. The selections, made from a catalogue of over a hundred pieces, function as a descriptive profile for a body of work made in the 1990's. Support comes from the LLWW Foundation, City of Los Angeles Cultural Affairs Department, Grant Division, California Arts Council, and the members of Los Angeles Contemporary Exhibitions. Recommended admission to Los Angeles Contemporary Exhibitions is $3.00 ($2.00 students, members free). Gallery hours are Wednesdays through Saturdays 12:00-6:00 p.m. Call 323-957-1777 for parking information, directions and additional information. ------------------------------ Date: Sun, 5 Dec 1999 14:51:39 -0800 From: "Kakki" Subject: Re: Luminous jewels. Mark, it really doesn't sound like jazz - it's very symphonic, with these huge strings crescendos embroidered here and there stunningly by Wayne Shorter and Mark Isham. To me it was kind of like hearing a whole album of Joni doing songs in the Paprika Plains mode, and that just takes my breath away. > Im also excited to see the silk moire (whatever that is) box and > candy cigarettes. It would probably be a good idea to eat/smoke them > once you get them, and not break your teeth on them in 10 years. Ha! How to describe silk moire - you will recognize it when you see it. It's like a heavy, almost ribbon-stiff silk that has little patterns woven through it. And just to clarify - I don't know for certain that the candy cigarettes wil be included. It is one of Robbie's idea but we were talking about it in a joking way. I do hope there is some kind of little "Crackerjack surprise" in the box, though! But there is another white, one that is almost luminescent. With all this talk about Joni's paintings, I am REALLY looking forward to seeing some of them up close next summer. For now, here's some info about white paints. There are three commonly used ones: flake white, which is kind of a milky color, used for centuries, very opaque but made out of lead so now that it's known how poisonous lead is, it's not used much anymore and certainly not by children (might have been your father's concern Kakki); titanium white is usually used instead, cheaper, non-poisonous, opaque, and easy to brush out, but tends toward yellow; and then there's zinc white, which is a brilliant almost bluish white and probably the one Joni used for the snow. It's also rather transparent so even if applied thickly as Joni seems to do, the light would go through it and bounce off the bright white (I'm assuming since that's usual) canvas. It tends to create a rather brittle surface so it's usually mixed with some titanium white, but in this case maybe not. > Your descriptions of the album covers are intriguing (sp? hello?) I CAN'T > WAIT. Either can I. What a joy it is to have this kind of information and be able to anticipate the next Joni-gift! (Someone: think of how "plain chicken" ties to one of Joni's songs!!) 3. What is "May2000"? Is that another JoniFest? Where? Julie is right - words can often be misinterpreted via email. That is why it is so important to take a step back and try to think what the writer might have meant before you retort. > >3. I don't have it anymore, but there is a post with a ton of info on this bash. Maybe someone can forward it to you. It's in New Orleans next may, 2000. Read about past JoniFests on Les' web site. I've only been to one, but I can attest that the music, food, fun and fellowship with like-minded folks and slumber-party atmosphere is one of those things you'll remember for a long time. Go http://www.finditnow.8m.com/ and you'll get an overview of current vouchers from CDNow, B&N, Amazon and others. Very convenient because the people at this site will update it regurarly :-) Perhaps posted before. Also a question: with great pleasure I've read the stories from the Listers' latest meeting with our Joan, and I was wondering if anybody asked her about possible concerts in support of the upcoming record...? Is the gig at La Scala in Milan still on? Any other selected shows, perhaps? My guess is that IF Milan will take place, she will probably do something in London also, and perhaps other major European cities such as Hamburg, Paris, and Amsterdam. BTW, I was in NYC two weeks ago to attend some of Sting's excellent new shows at the Beacon Theatre, and I hung out with Chris Botti at an "aftershow" party afterwards. Of course we mainly spoke about Joni and he just kept going on about how incredible that band was, and how much he got from that. Really nice guy, and if you haven't already, check out his album - great stuff, and includes a line-up of totally excellent musicians. Man, February 2000: the new Steely Dan album (Amy, Terry - I'm coming over for their tour in the Spring!) AND and new Joni record :-) :-) :-) :-) :-) Best to all, enjoy what's left of your Sunday. Bryan does sound chillingly excellent, after all! Joni would have heard Bryan a couple years ago on the JMDL Tribute Tape sent to her where he submitted another amazing set. Call me delusional, but I still think to this day that she sounded influenced by and adopted more than a bit of his style in the "Black Crow" she later performed live at the 1998 concerts. I also feel she adopted a bit of Marian's style for "Moon at the Window" in those concerts. This tribute tape was produced by ChuckE and included Les, Wally B, Wally K, Suemac, Sherelle, ChuckE, Terry, Patricia, Tom Ross and many others from the list and was offered on one of the early tape trees. Now if we hear her sounding influenced by any of the renditions from the Jonifest Box Set at future concerts, we can really freak out ;-) Kakki ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 6 Dec 1999 02:27:30 -0500 From: "Eric Taylor" Subject: Re: Joni album painting Kakki wrote: << I'm still trying to make out what's on that coaster! I'm ELATED that Joni is at-long-last being recognized for the multitude of her talents. I mean, who could have predicted a year ago that she would be releasing an album of vocal covers & launching the first tour of her paintings?! This makes me suspect she reads the JMDL. With all the discussion about her *smoky* voice, *cold* VG8 & *unoriginal* painting last year, it seems like SIQUOMB has risen to the challenge & as usual surpasses herself.
