Good Lord, Marcel, I didn't hear one single thing "off" with your songs - I was blown away. It made me think of how I never knew STAS was actually a very damaged final product for almost 30 years till I joined the list. Crosby still weeps over the "wreckage" of that production, but I never thought anything was wrong with it and thought it was deliberately supposed to sound the way it did! It still remains neck in neck with FTR as my favorite Joni album. But I know how it is - I also recorded and performed music in another lifetime and always, always fretted about everything and was never satisfied with my final product. Even when people would effuse over me and compliment me, I would think to myself "oh, but they just don't really know." I would also think "oh, they just don't listen to people like Joni Mitchell, so they don't know what *really good* is." Self-criticism *is* necessary for spurring us on and keeping us practicing and perfecting but we can lose sight sometimes that we may really be a lot better in truth than we might perceive. When I heard the box set the first time, I was immediately so taken with everyones' performances, I really didn't notice anything wrong with anything. But with the expression of some peoples' worry about it, I thought maybe I missed something. So tonight I dug out the "pre-mastered", uncut JoniFest tapes that Paz sent me before the official Box Set was released and have been here listening for a few hours and GEEZ, YOU GUYS, it really is fantastic and very special. I swear it's better than the professional Joni's Jazz Tribute. "Our tribute" has a little of everything in it - it's VIVID, dammit ;-) and also equal parts gorgeous, adorable, heart-pulling, funny, brilliant and fun. Think of some of the artists Joni adores, O.K.? Not a one is a technical perfectionist, not a single one.
