Expecting a Latino version of David Cassidy I was pleasantly surprised by the depth & talent of this latest teen idol. >> I, on the other hand, experienced a strongly negative reaction to this fellow. Having been led to believe that "here is one teen pop sensation who can really sing" (where have I heard that claim before?), I was appalled by that single of his. His voice sounds dull and processed (he was a member of Menudo, lest we forget). Then there's the small matter of the music, which really sucks: sounds like it could all have been made by machines - why is it that whichever svengalis are responsible for this drivel believe that kids can't stomach music made with musical instruments? I mean, listening to that Christina Aguilera song (Genie in a Bottle), I experienced a mild depression that it could be so utterly soulless, and seemed to be made by robots, fronted by a worryingly young-and-virginal looking girl. It gave me the creeps, to be honest. Despite the oft-quoted maxim that nobody ever went broke underestimating the public's intelligence, my own experience tells me that people are capable of dealing with far more involving music than is foisted on them by most radio stations: I've done many tapes for friends and work colleagues, some of whom barely listen to anything other than top 40 stuff; I've included people like Joni, REM, Jane Siberry, Christine Collister, Eels, etc etc, and they've all gone down well. I entertained one colleague whose favourite song was No Doubt's Don't Speak; I played her the second Til Tuesday album, Welcome Home, and she loved it. I bought my former secretary, who like Boyzone, Shawn Colvin's A Few Small Repairs, and guess what - she loved it! If only those in charge of radio stations had a bit of faith and presenters who love music and can communicate enthusiasm for it, these great people would get a bit of airplay, sell a few more records, and we might be saved from the surely-inevitable torment of solo careers by all of Boyzone... Last I heard, she was having >trouble getting her newest album released. Jill Sobule has had similar >difficulties Hi Azeem, I happened to read an article in the Dallas Morning News regarding Aimee Mann's contribution to the new Paul Thomas Anderson (Boogie Nights) movie "Magnolia". Here's a link to a song and an article about the film and her new album. Thought you might enjoy both. Patti http://www.magnoliamovie.com/saveme.html Link to download song Aimee Mann Readies Soundtrack, Solo Album Aimee Mann contributes eight new songs to the Reprise soundtrack for the forthcoming New Line film "Magnolia," which opens nationally on Jan. 7. But she has also readied "Bachelor No. 2," her first proper solo album in over three years, for a late December release on her own SuperEgo label. One of the most critically acclaimed female artists of recent years and the former vocalist for '80s pop group 'Til Tuesday, Mann was approached by "Magnolia" director Paul Thomas Anderson to contribute to the film's soundtrack. "Magnolia" stars Tom Cruise, Julianne Moore, and John C. Reilly; the latter two who appeared in Anderson's 1997 movie "Boogie Nights." "He heard the record I was working on and was really excited about some of the songs and started working on a screenplay. Then I would read some of the screenplay and play some music and fit it in thematically," Mann tells Billboard."There were a couple songs that were written that way, back and forth." The songs "Save Me" and "You Do" were written expressly for the movie. The "Magnolia" soundtrack and the release of "Bachelor No. 2" mark a welcome return to visibility for Mann, who has endured label trouble for most of her solo career. Her solo debut, "Whatever," was released in 1993 on Imago Records, which lost its distribution deal with BMG the next year. Her follow-up album, "I'm With Stupid," came out three years later on DGC/Geffen, which also re-released "Whatever." When DGC/Geffen was absorbed by Interscope earlier this year during the PolyGram/Universal merger, Mann, who was well into recording her third solo album project, was dropped. But out of deep disappointment came hope, as the unsigned Mann, now living in Los Angeles, was the subject of a New York Times Magazine feature in July that detailed her clash with Interscope over the progress of "Bachelor No. 2." Mann acquired the rights to the unreleased Geffen album and, deciding to go the do-it-yourself route, is releasing it on SuperEgo Records next month. The 13-track "Bachelor No. 2" includes the song "Nothing Is Good Enough," an instrumental version of which appears on the soundtrack to "Magnolia." Three other soundtrack cuts -- "Deathly," "Driving Sideways," and "You Do" -- are also on the solo disc. Also included is "(The Fall Of The World's Own) Optimist," which Mann co-wrote with past collaborator Elvis Costello. -- Jim Bessman, N.Y., Billboard . ------------------------------ Date: Sun, 28 Nov 1999 15:52:35 -0600 (CST) From: michael w yarbrough Subject: Re: Ricky Martin NJC Eric wrote about Enrique: > It REALLY pisses me off that Ricky has been labeled *Gay* by talk show > hosts & gossip columnist simply because he is exceptionally good looking > & has THE GIFT of moving his body to the music. In the spirit of fairness I ordered his latest CD from BMG & was pleasantly surprised. I anticipated a Back Street Boys clone. Rather he's more like Tom Jones meets Michael Jackson.... Ricky's concert on CBS last Friday was even more impressive. Amazing band, spectacular choreography, good voice, great moves, energizing show! All the old farts will probably give me hell for this but Ricky conveyed the same feeling to me that the Beetles did when I first saw them on the Ed Sullivan show. I'm so glad that I'm not stuck in an era or genre & can still get excited by new talent. Who was it that said Rock & Roll wouldn't last? YOUR GRANDPARENTS! I can see why straight men would want to think Mr. Martin is gay - the guy exudes emotion quite sensually (without even grabbing his crotch). What bugs me is that assholes like Jay Leno stereotype Ricky as a closet case. This is obviously meant to put the man down. To me it is extremely homophobic & unfair. But the public eats it up! & WallyK. RM is from Puerto Rico (which is arguably too American but none-the-less Latin). Yes, for Joni, but I've been having some of the same wavering feelings as I've been listening faithfully to the Millennium Countdown. I didn't vote in that poll, btw. But listening this past week, there were three I would have seriously weighed their merits before casting a Joni vote over any one them....especially the first classical composer to make the list the day before Thanksgiving. Billie Holiday, Gerswin and Duke Ellington should have all finished higher too, imho. But all this leads me to a question. And I know these polls are not an exact science by any stretch, especially considering all the ballot stuffing people do for their personal favorites. But is it possible to be objective when rattling off the placement of the top 10 or 20 or more? I've found I have a tendency to discount people who are currently making contributions that didn't come onto the scene until after my childhood. I would probably always give the nod to the Billies, Basies, Gerswins, Bachs, etc. over the Stings, Madonnas, Eltons just because they were so etched into my psyche as musical giants from as far back as I can remember. I guess I'm asking if it's possible to be objective in a poll like this. BTW, I consider Joni to be included as already established by the time I started listening to her, like The Beatles, Dylan, Clapton, Joplin etc. Don't tell Joni, I said this, but I would certainly list Joni the highest of all the women artists, but I don't know if that would even be in, say the top five. Do other's besides Russell and I struggle with this? Is it possible to look past how much someone has meant to you, to objectively rate where they should rightfully stand in music history?
