Wow, wow, WOW!!!! I have been a bit out of touch with you guys with my busy life, but I just HAD to get on this morning and tell you about last night! What an INCREDIBLE concert! I had "heard" of Jimmy Webb before, of course, but really just as a passing name before this list started their ranting praises of him. However, I am always one to go hear some new music though, so when Chuck called me a while back to ask if I wanted to go to Sculler's Jazz Club and see Jimmy Webb, I said "Sure!" Chuck, his wife Barbara, Roberto, Patrick, and my friend and I met for a light dinner beforehand. Anne joined us at the end of dinner, and we went into the club for an incredible evening. I was completely blown away, as he sang song after song, and I was alternately in tears from the beauty of the songs, or amazed at the fact that "He wrote THIS one too?" Galveston, By the Time I Get to Phoenix, Didn't We, Highwayman, Witchita Lineman, and so many more! Afterwards, we all went to Chuck and Barbara's house, and hung out, listened to music, played some music, and talked about all of YOU! ;-) It was a REALLY wonderful night, and I have all of you Jimmy Webb fans to thank for it! What a great list this is! Thanks to Paul Castle, who alerted his management that we JMDLers would be in the audience, he remembered to say hi to us!!! Of course, we yelled and screamed, and made complete fools of ourselves for all to see and hear when he said that! Thanks, Paul!!!! Released back in October of 1998, "When I Go" has sold extremely well off the stage, online and at festivals. "When I Go" was called "one of the best albums of the year" by the Los Angeles Times. The duo was featured in the highly competitive formal showcases at the National Folk Alliance Conference in Albuquerque this year and played festivals large and small across the U.S. Highlights include singing "This Land is Your Land" arm-in-arm with Woody Guthrie's little sister, Mary Jo, at the Woody Guthrie Free Folk Festival in Oklahoma, opening for Christine Lavin at the Sierra Songwriters Festival in California, and opening for Ray Wylie Hubbard at St. John's Pub in Pregon. The press favored the duo - most notably, the Los Angeles Times wrote a full-page review of "When I Go" in support of the duo's first Southern California appearance, calling the album "a candidate for discovery of the year" and naming Dave Carter "a major lyrical talent". http://songs.com/daveandtracy ------------------------------ Date: Sun, 14 Nov 1999 17:46:07 +0100 From: "Peter Holmstedt" Subject: Plug Of The Week #45 Hi there, Once in a while an artist comes along, destined for absolute stardom. One of these artists from 1997 was definitely Bruce Henderson. His first album "The Wheels Roll" was one of the highlights of 1997. He has just released his new album : Bruce Henderson - Beyond The Pale ( Omad/Paradigm Records ) Bruce was born and raised in Stillwater, Oklahoma. He honed his playing in the fertile music scene of Austin, Texas before relocating to New York City to form Hearts & Minds, a roots- rock band that released one album for A&M Records. After the bands break-up, he formed his band, High Plain Drifters, before deciding to to also step out on his own as a recording artist. His 1997 solo debut, "The Wheels Roll", made quite a splash, hitting #11 on the national Gavin Americana chart and receiving high praise from the press across the country. Well-known filmmaker Robert Altman even called him "the best songwriter since Jimmy Webb and Lyle Lovett". To say that the past year has been a year of ups and downs for Bruce would be the understatement of the year. While he was completing work on his new album, he discovered that he had testicular cancer. This led Henderson into a very dark period, with two rounds of major surgery and ten sessions of chemotherapy in New York. He literally underwent major cancer surgery on the day he turned in his completed record for mastering. For "Beyond The Pale", Bruce is teamed with several longtime collaborators; noted Australian producer/guitarist Kerryn Tolhurst (Paul Kelly), bassist Paul Ossola (Roches), drummer Steve Holley (Paul McCartney, Junior Brown), keyboardist Charlie Giordano (Joe Cocker, Pat Benetar) and guitarist Andy York (John Cougar Mellencamp, Marshall Crenshaw). Galveston, By the >Time I Get to Phoenix, Didn't We, Highwayman, Witchita Lineman, and so many >more! It really is amazing to learn how many of the beautiful songs recorded by artists such as Art Garfunkel, Paul Simon, David Crosby, Johnny Rivers, Barbra Streisand and many others were written by Webb. In particular, Garfunkel's album "Watermark", which I think is one of the most gorgeous albums ever made(proved by the fact that I wore out no less than 4 cassette tapes of it!) Joni provides much of the background vocals on two of his early 70s albums - "Letters" and "Land's End". Unfortunately those two albums are extremely hard to find now (although "Letters" is available on an import label through CDNow and CD Universe). I have tapes of some of the cuts from those albums but would love to find them on the original vinyl. More Joni-related content - Henry Diltz and Jimmy have both spoken frequently about being old friends. Henry shot the cover photo for "Land's End" when the two of them went up in a glider over the Mojave Desert. They both to this day relate funny stories about that day in interviews - I recall they crashed the glider and had quite an adventure. I'm so glad you all a wonderful time. And it's very cool he said a special hello to the group. Azeem in London NP: "To Venus and Back", Tori Amos's newest, which I think is brilliant. She has so many mannerisms and characteristics that could infuriate: the eccentric breathing that seems to have influenced too many lesser talents (no names, I'm feeling charitable); the habit of drawing out single words over several bars; the impenetrable lyrics. And yet, and yet, she is just so damn talented that it doesn't seem to matter. And the album sounds amazing: dark and twisted production, sinewy and sinuous. And of course beautifully recorded piano. This is Jamie's original post about the Eurojonifest 2000, for anyone else who didn't catch or save it: Dear friends, I have just spoken to the bookings person at the Troubadour Coffee house in Earl's Court and we have a provisional date pencilled in for January 4th at 7.00pm 2000. It's a Tuesday and I believe the cellar remains open until 12. I will call her up after my trip and confirm details about particulars i.e. will we be advertising, will we be selling tickets, we intend to play as a gig, what are the implications etc. If anyone could come up with suggestions I would most appreciate it. The standard charge is £50 for the room for the evening plus £30 for waitress service. I have gone for that option but will confirm details with Daphne when I return. I thought £80 for the whole event is pretty reasonable, especially if we have non listers come and listen. I guess this means that the standard of Music will have to be pretty high. From what I have heard I'm sure it will be. Anyone else in the UK with a burning desire to perform a song or two? And I got and have been enjoying the Jonifest boxed set and will be glad to make CD copies (or cassettes if you prefer) for anyone who wants. Very cool stuff, especially when Disc One kicks off with "Ladies & Gentlemen, Bob Muller"! Hoowee, I sure wasn't ready for that - but I didn't make *too* much of a fool of myself and stayed out of the musicians' ways most of the time... But what I REALLY was writing about was a new tape I got yesterday with a crop of NEW Joni songs I'd never heard: Looking Out For Love (Piano) Blue on Blue (guitar, from '67) Gift of The Magi (same) Melody In Your Name (same) Dr. Junk The Dentist Man (same) The quality of this stuff is incredible...There are also pristine versions of Both Sides Now, Circle Game, Just Like Me (again, it starts midway into the song), Eastern Rain (John in Sydney, this song always reminds me of you now). At one point she's tuning and pops a string, she does more of her great between song conversation, it's amazing...this would also be stuff that should be in Joni's Rarities Box Set (that doesn't exist - yet). Since that time I have read many enjoyable posts (who can read them all?), mostly while listening to Joni Mitchell. I'm relatively new to her music and haven't aquired all her records as of yet but plan to do so. After rocking my way through my twenties I "took a chance" on C&S after repeatedly reading other artist's adoration of it. At that point ZZ Top and Max Webster just wasn't cutting it for me anymore. That vinyl is in the garage I think! Anyway, I've got about 11 of her CD's now and they rule the carousel giving way only occassionaly to Bruce Hornsby, Nina Simone, Son House, etc..., and as of Saturday, Jonatha Brooke for which I have all of you to thank. But, enough about me. I'm not sure if this has been previously discussed but I happened across a copy of Entertainment Weekly and flipped through the "100 Greatest Entertainers" of the last 50 years. As we all would expect, Joni makes the list, at #63 which, seeing as I can't be objective with regard to her, I assume is "respectable." However, the beautiful thing about ranking the unrankable is, it often rankles just about everybody. The respectability of position 63 goes out the window when Julia Roberts ranks #48, Cher #58, Saturday Night Live #7, Oprah #31 among others. If you're interested, you can find the list on the Time Magazine site. There is also a small interview with Joni which contains little of what we didn't already know. In the magazine itself, her little bio fails to explain her contribution in an almost apologetic tone. (IMO) Two last thoughts: Thank you to Sue MacNamara and other contributors for the great guitar files. (they cost me $1100 for a D28) And, as a Canadian I am particularly proud of Joni who more than makes up for a boat load of Shania's. De-lurking completed!
