It isn't. I too, as pointed out, have all those mails you refer to and I did not refer to fundie xtians. I will not posts the quotes again, as they were sent yesterday. That first post you wrote to me in response to my comments reagarding ridiculous attitudes to astrology etc did not mention 'fundie xtians', but you still had the gaul to tell not to post such comments. IF I was anti xtian, as you insist on saying, I would have no involvement with the church whcih i do sveral times a week. My mentor is also a Vicar, Fthr Kinsey. My problem is with people who are fundamentalist, be they xtian, mulsim, jewish, or whatever. 'Because if they didn't have a chip on their shoulder, or weren't still uncomfortable in their own skin, the cause they continually spout off about wouldn't be so forefront in their mind.' This is writen in pure ignorance. You obviously have no conception at all as why some gay people stand up for themselves. (by the way as for the self esteem thing-again ignorance speaking. Back in the days when I had none, i would let things go by and get trodden). Just why should i let bigotry pass by without a comment? How could I read the Matthew thread and not comment on it? yes, the subject of homophobia is very close to me-because I am gay. Until I moved here I lived in constant fear with reason. i was assaulted twice, had my car wrecked several times, had bricks thrown thru my windows and came home to a trashed home with 'DIE AIDS SCUM' and other welcoming messages sprayed on the walls. these were just the incidents of the last few months. I have never made it a secret that i don't like fundamentalism. Others have said the same. if this bothers you, then you obviously class yourself amongst those bigots. Not only have you offended me in posts with bnigoted com ents, which i can't here as they were private, but i know of three other people who have been highly offended by your comments to them-they are all gay too. But of course the problem is ours isn't it Penny? If you are going to accuse me at least make sure you have your facts right. And if you think I feel less than warmly toward you, it might be because the very first post you aimed at me and the others since have all been inflamatory, rude, arrogant and in some cases downright nasty, especially the one where you asked: Do you just try to figure this stuff > all out in your own head, which you've already stated that you're > bipolar so that's probably a rollercoaster, or do you actually want to > get to the truth and take the time and effort to read a few books that > could explain some things to you clearly and rather quickly. and in other posts where you boldly stated I was sinful by reason of my sexuality. and then give me a little sermon on the tempatations of the flesh!!! So penny, if you are ready to write all these things to a person and to publicly make false accusations about that person, then be mature enough to expect that person not be very happy with you, rather than try to play the innocent and hurt party. In my time on this list, I have had few email spats with people. I have had many positive responses from people, people who have taken the time to be really pleasant and friendly. There are many I communcate with privately on a regular basis. NONE of them have been anything like the harranging you started. I am not likely to change my stance about fundamentalism nor homophobia just because you don't like it. If you choose to take everyhting I say as a personal attack on you then i suggest maybe you look into your own reasons for that. You suggested I had a self esteem issue. perhaps you do to as well. or atleast an inabilty to be honest. How can you think that having said to me that my sexuality is sinful, that i would not think of you as a bigot? How can you think that this attitude of yours does not have anything to do with what happened to Matthew or to the hell I had to endure in London? seriously, Penny, although I know you want to paint me as having the problem, i really think it is you. ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 9 Nov 1999 02:09:56 -0800 From: "Kakki" Subject: Re: such a baby! Well, the book-reading group I attend has just finished Jack Kerouac's ON THE ROAD and in part 4, Ch. 5. the narrator and two companions, Dean and Stan, traveling through Mexico, come to a town where they meet some Mexican Indian guys their own age: "So the Indian brothers began talking about us in low voices and commenting; you saw them look, and size, and compare mutualities of impression...." Then in THE NEW YORK TIMES for today (Nov 9) in the Arts Section, a review of a new play appears, of which I will quote the first two-and-a-half paragraphs: "Here's what used to happen in Ireland to a young woman who found herself pregnant, at least if her family decided to throw her out: she'd be forced to give up her baby, which would be put up for adoption or placed in an orphanage, and she wouldn't be allowed to visit. Then she'd be essentially held captive by the Roman Catholic Church, forced to live in a cloister and work in its laundry for the rest of her life. "And this was not in the 16th century, Patricia Burke Brogan reports; it was practically yesterday. In 'Eclipsed,' her thought-provoking drama that opened Sunday night at the Irish Repertory Theater, four young women in just that situation in the 1960's cheer themselves up while washing, ironing and sweeping by fantasizing about Elvis Presley and singing his greatest hits. " 'Eclipsed' begins with a scene in which a woman in her 30's (Erika Rolfsrud), who has grown up with adoptive parents, arrives at Magdalene Laundry looking for information about her birth mother, who had lived there." This is Rainbow in Hawaii! I have written a few short posts and made some personal connections but don't believe I have "officially" inroduced myself to this list. Thank you all for inviting me out on this special day. I have been basically "computer illiterate", living without conventional electricity for most of my years here on the Big Island. I don't feel com- fortable trying to use computers in libraries or coffee shops but when I moved "on the grid " last summer I said I would learn to do e-mail if someone brought one to my home. Well my friend who has all this cool electrical stuff, (web tv, vcr, cordless phone), but no phone or elec- tric where he lives , (only a few miles down the road!) brought it all over to my house where it now has a home. I am one of those people who looked Joni up first thing, joined the list right away, and have been faithfully lurking ever since! Sometimes you make me laugh out loud, some- times I "delete", "delete", "delete", sometimes I make cool connections for new (to me), Joni info, music, videos. Many times you've ex- pressed my feelings so I didn"t feel moved to write. Thank you all for being so nice. I always knew you were out there--a following of Joni- lovers who knew far more than I and that somehow our Love and Apprecation for this wondrous artist/performer was keeping us connected. I got turned onto Joni's first album when I was 12 and have been hooked ever since. I grew up with Joni Mitchell. She has always been my #1 Musical Influence in this life.(Idol) I was also influenced by George Harrison--"All Things Must Pass" and "Living in the Material World" and Donovan up to his "Essence to Essence" album. I listened to the Beatles, the Monkees, the Mamas and Papas, Dylan, C.S.N.&Y, Phil Oches, Jim Kweskin, Jethro Tull, Cat Stevens --every time I got $2.99 from babysitting I would go out and buy another album. I would love to have that record collection today! Three orange crates full! But alas! I went thru my "Spiritual Renunciate" phase and let it all go. Over the years, living such a simple lifestyle here on the Islands I've never really created such a musical collection since, but have managed to pick up most of Joni's tapes or cds over the years and still listen to them all. I was glad to hear Joni finally got some recog- nition for "Turbulent Indigo" but why not "Court and Spark"? I mean how much more classic can an album get? TI and NRH are not my favorite abums--TTT is definitely my favorite in a long time. I love "Mingus" and WTRF in par- ticular. Here is a poem I wrote for Joni a long time ago called, "For Joni Mitchell--When She Gets It All Together": I have a friend, a friend named Joni, who I have not yet personally met, Now this Joni sang lonely for her one and only; she knew she was full of a lot of baloney--she used to wish she could "laugh it all away"--and now she can! Hooray for today! (I was laughing for you yesterday) I love you, Sister, for always Kinda corny but you get the point I hope you all forgive the length of this post--I don't feel so guilty for taking up too much space since it didn't appear that too many lurkers actually "came out". Right now at my house a party is going on--it's another good friend of our's birthday, Nov. 7 and the party has been going on all weekend here. Earlier this evening some sisters were singing Joni Mitchell Songs. I have never really been a "dead-head", but I call myself a "dead-head by association"--some of my best friends are deadheads. I appreciate the music and the phenomena. What comes to Heart is the "I Need A Miracle" Phenomena I would like to put out to the list that I am inter- ested to go to the New Orleans Joni-fest in May I have never been to New Orleans and have always "lurked" there somewhere in my con- sciousness. Perhaps that would be the time to "come out" If there are any "Joni-ships" avail- able I would be interested. "I Need A Miracle" If anyone feels moved to help me get there, let me know. On this end, I could offer a cool guest room across the road from the ocean, close to warm ponds, snorkling tidepools, Green Lake and Kehena Beach, if anyone wants to come to Hawaii. I may not be rich in money, but I live a very rich life. I also crochet mostly with hemp and make cool bags and hats. One of my visions is to make dance videos to some of Joni's music. If I make it to New Orleans I'd like to sing a song. Aloha Everyone! Happy Birthday Joni! This is perhaps due to the songs she writes aren't exactly for singing. This may sound contradictory but she has said that her songs are lyrically dramatic and musically, nowadays, the melody is secondary to the lyric (I guess she's talking about stuff from Hejira onwards). There are, of course, exceptions but generally the stuff that we like of hers is the stuff that has depth in its lyricism while the songs that other people wrote that she sings are more singerly (if there is such a word). 'Touble Man, 'Stormy Weather' 'The Man I Love', 'Comes Love' etc etc she is excellent in her phrasing and 'feel' for the song. She can certainly put a song across. What would her singing do if she interpreted a jazz standard to one of her guitar tunings? BTW why on PWWAM is 'Comes Love' listed as 'Nothing Can Be Done'? Is it actually called NCBD or is it just a scribe's mistake? Is anyone a fan of their work? can anyone relate?? It's wonderful to hear all these songs that the list mentions now and again and that aren't on any CDs...finally the word "Kenora" makes sense to me :-) And isn't it great to hear her chat away in between songs... Last weekend my good friend Cynthia was visiting from California (I am in Tucson) where she chooses to live without a TV & VCR and had never seen Painting With Words and Music. She has been a Joni partisan since LOTC and myself since Blue, and we had the wonderful opportunity of seeing Joni at the Greek Theatre in L.A. during the Shadows and Light tour many moons ago (early 80s). It was exciting to watch the show with another Joni-phile for the first time. Once again I was blown away by "Comes Love," which for some reason isn't listed on the sleeve? Along with everything else. Last year after TTT came out I made a tape with many songs from that wonderful album as well as many older songs... today as I was driving I listened to Cotton Avenue and Paprika Plains (yes in it's entirety) from DJRD and am amazed each time at the awesome and magical talent that brings us together as Joni fan(atics). Another one I listened to today was "Harlem in Havana" from TTT and that has become a real favorite among SO MANY. I anxiously await Joni's upcoming CD including standards as well as A Case of You and Both Sides Now as I understand it, as well as the tribute CD (any date on that?). Don't know when I'll "delurk" or "decloak" again but I do enjoy reading the posts. Thanks. Thinking about you all on this list... Pondering various comments as I listened to this masterpiece... I wonder how many times I've listened to DJRD over the years.... I put on Court and Spark-not an album I listen to a great deal. But today i really enjoyed it. to me it is her most poppy album. I love Car On A Hill, Just Like This Train, Twisted, Raised On Robbery. I also listedned to NRH, TI, Hejira, and STAS. It always surprises me just how different our joni is on each album. The letter for "ch" in the Greek alphabet is "chi" which when written looks like this: "X" In very early Christian tradition the X was used as a logo (as it were) for Christianity, or for Christ. Many churches have decorations on the bestments, paraments, in the stained glass windows, which involve the X or perhaps the XR, the chi rho, in English, Ch and R, for Christ. Thus the use of Xmas and Xian have a long history in the Church and in no way disrepectful. Indeed, the X is among the most ancient of Christian symbols (a slight tilt and it is a cross...).
