As you probably know, it's a horrific experience to explain the Holocaust to children. It has a way of making me feel helpless and ashamed of the human race. It was one thing for me to study about the Holocaust in my small Catholic/Christian town while growing up----Hitler's Germany seemed so so long ago, but now that I live in Pittsburgh's largest Jewish neighborhood, it's become quite personal for me because our kind next door neighbor, Larry, is a Holocaust survivor who's son was concieved in Auschwitz....and right next door to him are the sweetest non Jewish professors from Poland. It brings to light that it didn't at all happen that long ago, which makes it all the more chilling as my generation sits so smug with our sometimes facist way of discouraging free thought through it's politically correct agenda... how evolved we have become...I don't think so. I ended up explaining to my daughter in my inarticulate way of talking about difficult things, that "some people are incredibly evil and convincing" to people who do not learn to discern.... Tonight, by the way, Im going to hear a religious music performance of Psalms (in English,) sung by a spiritually inspired Jewish singing group.. Since **really** reading the Bible (for the first time,) this summer, I found myself becoming moved by the beautiful imagery and poetry in the Psalms....When you think about how long ago that they were written and yet that they still manage to capture our current modern day joys and concerns ----it's remarkable. >> Howdy neighbor! I can't believe that we live SO close & still haven't met yet. Not that we haven't tried - I'm just such a recluse. What really gets to me is that there are more nazis in the world today than during WWII. One of the things that the kids gunning down their classmates have in common is a fascination with Hitler (the Columbine tragedy happened on Adolph's birthday & on their first day back to school swastikas were spraypainted on the walls). Meanwhile a student in Georgia was forbidden to wear a Star of David to school because it could be mistaken for a gang symbol! There is something terribly wrong but I don't think simply teaching creationism or posting the Ten Commandments in schools is the answer. Perhaps making The Diary of Anne Frank required reading & field trips to the D.C. Holocaust Museum would help. Being a gentile I have a few more suggestions. American children & adults should be educated that: The first person to step foot off of the Mayflower onto Plymouth Rock was Jewish. America's founding fathers were mostly Freemasons (who trace their origin back to King Solomon of Israel & envision the USA as New Jerusalem). George Washington, Thomas Jefferson, & Benjamin Franklin proposed Hebrew as America's national language. The American Revolution was primarily financed by one Jewish patriot. If it weren't for the Yanks Europe & Russia would be the Third Reich. America was the only UN member to support the recreation of the State of Israel. I could go on & on about the enormous contributions Jews have made to this world. This does NOT IN ANY WAY diminish the important contributions made by Arabs, Germans, Irish, Gays, or anyone else. I'm just attempting to shed some perspective here. G-d how I love David's Psalms! I hope to experience the Anne Frank exhibit at our local Jewish Community Center before it goes away. ;~) E.T. I don't understand - what could anyone say about You Turn Me On, I'm a Radio that is critical. IMHO that song is absolutely perfect - essence of Joni. I love it totally and completely. The genius and heart of Joni is in every word, in every sound of that track. Such a succinct insight into the human condition - this is truly Joni at her very, very best. Another parenting thread!!! << There is something terribly wrong but I don't think simply teaching creationism or posting the Ten Commandments in schools is the answer. Perhaps making The Diary of Anne Frank required reading & field trips to the D.C. Holocaust Museum would help. >> This is true! I think that parents and teachers sometimes forget that it is not enough to teach polite manners and conflict resolution and other self-esteem enhancing skills. They also must teach and illustrate the consequences of mindless behavior. They must be aware of their children's taste in music and friends and books. And when kids flirt with neo-Nazism or fringe groups that embrace philosophies other than saving the toad-eared, spotted elf, they must spring into action. Not by wringing the kid's neck, (as tempting as that might be), but by hauling their sorry butts to the Holocaust Museum or a local Jewish museum or by sitting down and watching "Night and Fog." The concept of "never again," will always be more vulnerable than it ought to be when parents and other educators just say: "oh, that's wrong!" or pass more freedom constricting legislation out of fear. They must remember to humanize the story and illustrate the consequences and talk about it! I'll also take it one step beyond and say that it's not about teaching your kids acceptance and tolerance. I think that there have been some threads in which our gay family members have pointed out that they do not wish to be "tolerated." I agree with that and believe that tolerance can sometimes foster a bit of a condescending attitude. I think that the key is to make the pop psychology point of "your own worth is only equal to the worth of everyone else," a corner stone of child rearing. At first glance, it can seem that it serves to drag you down to a scum sucking level of slime, (ie, "you're no better than anyone else you sorry pile of bones"), but that's absolutely wrong. There are religions that sprout the dogma that we are all flawed sinners who must repent for redemption. There are philosophies that assure us that we are nothing more than murky swirls of mysterious double helixes bumbling through time until the void of death. And then there is the MG Cult Commandment #87b that steals the line from Joni: "We are stardust, we are golden." And THAT'S the worth of everyone else and by simple mathematics, your worth. Teaching children that we are all golden, our worths are all priceless makes the chasm inducing differences such as who we love, skin color, religion and nationality nothing more significant than personal preferences in bologna. Not acceptance and tolerance as much as always seeking and seeing the gold in the person next to you. Awright, awright. Enuff sermonizing for the day. Being falsely accused is not pleasant. I keep my 'sent' files. So I trawled thru them this evening going back to July. I could not find any quotes from myself or from others that were anti Christian. I found some that are anti bigotry wrapped up as religion. These quotes apply to any religion. If we feel forced to change our email list behaviour(eg switch to digest) to save being distressed by comments people make, then perhaps we need to look to oursleves for the source of the problem. The following are quotes made about bigotry. If your religious beliefs include this sort of bigotry I don't find it too surprising that they would be labelled as anti religion. This allows you to take offence and miss the point and not examine your beliefs. Once again, myself and others cannot be held accountable for the way a person interpret what they read. Non gays don't get this out of an honest inability to understand or because they don't want to out of religious belief because for many to disagree with God, as taught to them, means eternal damantion. then i discovered i had been taught wrong and that others had only placed their interpretations of God upon me. I hear the word tolerance most often from those > > whose belief is that homosexuals are inherently sinful. ' i love you but > > hate your sin' is how it goes. But they are afraid. Hence, if we look at the song from a colonial standpoint, then the term exposes the value judgements of the colonizer. I think it is very effective, and not racist in the slightest. For those of you who have an interest in psychoanalysis and the Holocaust, I recommend Dori Laub's TESTIMONY: CRISES OF WITNESSING IN LITERATURE, PSYCHOANALYSIS, AND HISTORY, Dominick Lacapra's REPRESENTING THE HOLOCAUST: HISTORY, THEORY, TRAUMA and HISTORY AND MEMORY AFTER AUSCHWITZ, and Cathy Caruth's TRAUMA: EXPLORATIONS IN MEMORY. Now, if only I could get my hands on Shoah... but for $300.... too rich for my blood! What a great time tonight seeing Jon Hendricks and Annie Ross at the Catalina Bar & Grill!! I chose to go to the late show, just on the miniscule off-chance that She may decide to wander in for the show (I was prepared to ask her who "Tar Baby and the Great White Wonder" really were ;-) So, anyway, my friend and I arrive between shows and chat with the band for awhile. I learn that 3 of the 4 band members performed at Joni's Jazz last summer. They ask me if I was there and I say "no, but 20 of 'my friends' were there and I've heard the tape" ;-) My friend tells them that I really want to hear "Twisted" but they inform me that Annie performed it for the first set and would not be doing it on the second set ;-( So I go into my whole JM thang and stuff and they tell me to just yell it out during the set and maybe she'd sing it. One of the band member says wickedly "Oh yes, we know Twisted, it is Annie's Social Security Number" ;-D The lights dim, the show starts and out comes Jon and Annie. Our minds are blown - Joni is almost 80 and Annie is almost 70 and they both look and act at least 30 years younger. Annie especially could easily pass for a 40ish fashion model. (I say the spirit of music does it). They sing Count Basie, Duke Ellington, Joao Gilberto (ahhhhh...sigh.....) and Charlie Parker and then Annie shoos Jon off the stage and says "You know all you here were invited tonight as my special guests and I have a song just for you" and then looks right at me and smiles and launches into a perfect "Twisted"!!! (Well, Golly-be-darned and I didn't even have to yell it out) They were just amazing and I can't believe I had the chance to see these living legends perform on an off-night backstreet in Hollywood. Afterward they both came over to my table and we talked and I asked them to sign my Court & Spark CD cover by their song and they were incredibly sweet and just really darling. Jon said "you know we have the ONLY song on there that she didn't write" and I assured him I knew that. Annie went to talk with her friend and I talked awhile with Jon. I said they should get a website so we can keep track of where they are appearing and he said someone in the audience last night from JPL who helped put that explorer thing on Mars offered to create one for them. Told him I got the tapes of Joni's Jazz and he was astounded and all excited like a kid. Told him I'd make him some copies if he'd like and he immediately wrote out his address and phone number. Asked him if I should include an extra set for Annie and he said "ohhh yeah, when she finds out I have these she's gonna want a copy, too!" (Simon - if you are reading this and would like to present them with first edition mint copies, please let me know and I'll let you take over from here ;-) For you NoCal and Seattle-lites - they are coming to your neighborhoods in the next couple weeks. Sometime next week they will be at Yoshi's in Oakland, CA and the week of Nov. 18th they will be at the Jazz Alley in Seattle. I hope some of you get the chance to see them - they are wonderful. And I told them that more of "my friends" would be seeing them there. ;-)" Hi Kakki- What a wonderful evening you must of had. Did you have your disposable camera? You might phone them and ask them if they would be interested in a weekend in New Orleans, say around May of 2000???? Do you know of any other dates they are doing maybe my way?? Thanks to Patrick, I enjoyed the Joni Jazz show over the last couple of days. I am just crazy about Eric Anderson doing Furry and Chaka was wonderful as well, PM Dawn. It's funny how they were all so nervous. I kinda feel better about some of my Joni performances forgetting where I was and leaving out words (right Patrick?). I have also received the Box Set from Les. Thank you so much Les! What a nice job on the cover and insert as well. My #1 son was very impressed and was singing along on Song For Sharon on the way to baseball yesterday. Hope everyone is well. It is long overdue. You have made so many of us so happy and with the addition of Brother Les given us a place to have extended family through the beautiful music of Joni Mitchell. I can't wait to hear your thoughts about the experience. May your body heal itself soon and allow you to continue your amazing work. My thoughts and prayers are with you as always. Your friend, Michael P.S. I am hoping you can make it for the tribute 2000 event here in New Orleans.
