Marveling to myself at having this incredible opportunity to listen to old songs I'd never heard before, works in progress and hear her tell stories about songs I have been intimately involved with for years. Thinking that I am spending a lot of time listening to Joni Mitchell lately. Deciding that that is a good thing for me as a musician right now. I feel like I am getting to study with a master... before the internet, I can't imagine how I would have been able to do this. I am learning a lot! At this moment of the world....... I am listening to more Joni than ever. And learning her songs- songs I never would have figured out on my own... I don't listen to that much music because I am playing a lot- but when I do listen, these days I rarely want to listen to anyone else but Joni. Just Jonatha and 2 guitars on stage, and 250 of us in padded church pews taking it all in. The feeling I got while sitting there mouthing (silently, of course) almost all the lyrics, was that this must have been what it was like watching Joni up on stage 30 years ago in a place like the Second Fret or the Main Point. Lori Fye (formerly of Texas, now of Philadelphia) met me at my office and we cruised on down the road to Appel Farm. It was a great evening. We hung around after the show and got to meet Jonatha and presented her with a set of Joni's Jazz tapes and a show program (thanks, Simon.) She was thrilled that two of her favorites, Joni and Chaka, were on the tapes. It's possible we'll hear from her here on the list, as I gave her the URL and posting address (So when she bounces one in, send it through, Les) A cricket made its way into the auditorium during the late stages of her act. She mentioned Joni and the crickets that were in tune on NRH. All in all, a VERY cool evening. Thanks for coming with me, Lori. When I hear a piece of music playing that I truly love or that makes me feel something extraordinary I am so drawn into it that I pretty much shut everything else out. In my younger days it was a danger to me to sit next to a stereo speaker at a party. If an album or a song came on that I loved I was pretty much out of the conversation for the duration. More often than not I would sing along which I'm sure was often very annoying. Joni certainly commands my full attention whenever I hear her. I think it would be very difficult to compose coherent thoughts in an email with Joni playing in the room. I've listened to Joni for about 25 years. My pattern with records I liked when I was a kid was to listen to them over & over until I had every note & word memorized and could sing along with the record or sing the song whenever the mood struck me. This was still my habit when I found Joni. So I guess I absorbed her music rather quickly in those days and being the substantial emotional and intellectual feast that her songs are, they have stuck with me over the years. I don't listen to Joni every day. About the only time I listen to music is driving back & forth to work. Joni does get thrown into the mix on a regular basis along with Billie Holiday, Cowboy Junkies and a few other staples of my music diet. But usually I'm listening to whatever is the latest of my most recent music acquisitions. Although when TTT came out it was like I was 20 again. I was so taken by it that I played it over & over again & learned every song. Not many records elicit that response anymore. NRH did. That one grabbed me & wouldn't let go for a long time. I still sing to myself a lot. I go out for walks on my lunch breaks and almost always sing while walking. I'm not a performer but there is something so satisfying about singing a Joni song. The melodies, the sound and poetry of the words and the feelings coming from somewhere deep in my soul make for a wonderful experience just walking down the street. I can definitely say that I sing Joni's songs more than anyone else's. For years I would strive to sing them exactly the way Joni does but just recently I've begun to attempt to put my own spin on some of them. It's fun. The songs from Mingus seem to be the most fun to try this with so far. Like you and Gina and Mark have mentioned, it is almost impossible for me to listen to music while doing something else. I tend to get drawn in and forget about what I am doing... especially trying to write... I find it too distracting. How people could do their homework with the radio blaring was incomprehensible to me. I too used to listen to a lot more music... Now, there are so many other alternatives that take up my day... writing emails, watching movies, learning Joni songs, writing my own songs... After much trauma, I have the Mac up and running again with a new system but I lost all of my bookmarks, addresses, everything. All of it. And of course I had stored all of my passwords and user names in the computer and lost all those too. My nagging friend who said, "I told you to write it all down in a spiral notebook" is a nagger indeed but was right. So to those who I have been emailing privately, not through the JMDL, I no longer have your email addresses. And as I lost my screensaver, the promo for the movie 'Titanic' I went looking for that and all of a sudden had a terrible realization: the first search should have been Joni related... oops... so my second search was for Joni. I confess my transgression. Since I got into Titanic about 40 years ago and Joni 30 years ago, may I be forgiven? And even as my second search, Joni beat out the church, the University of Michigan, the Chicago White Sox, Samoyeds, and other things most dear to me. Just ran spellcheck... and JMDL is the first word added to my dictionary. Does anyone have the information on where to get a Joni screensaver? I know we just all went through this thread but I lost everything... and I don't think that I will ever find my Titanic screensaver again anyway. Vince ------------------------------ Date: Sat, 30 Oct 1999 19:49:12 -0400 From: "patrick leader" Subject: RE: My Take on Joni's Jazz (LONG) hey bob and all, how wonderful to see a nice long appreciation of this concert, that i loved so much. i didn't and still don't find the negatives as painful as you did. but you definitely tuned into the high points that i loved so much. jane siberry was pretty awful in 'people's parties' and i read that she was mortified about it. i think she is on the low end of the scale in learning lyrics and comfort on stage, but her own concerts can be amazing because she dances on such a narrow ledge. absolutely my favorite live artist these days. i think her performance of strange boy last summer was brilliant, and i love it on tape. did she really screw up lyrics, aside from surfboard/skateboard (which is kind of beautiful)? i felt that she really inhabited the song and it's place in the evening. it was probably unplanned, but when she said to the amazing bass player 'just tell me where the one is' she might have been paying tribute to shorter's comment 'joni, they'll never be able to tell where the one is.' and i love how she annoints 'stiff-blue-haired-house-rules'. could anyone but joni mitchell write a line like that? jane joins the rest of us joni fans in an act of obeisance. and it feels like a performance-art moment (a good one). i also think that eric anderson is great on furry (though he is truly awful on 'just like this train') for furry, that speaksingtaletelling voice is just right, and he is really listening to the musicians (doug weiselman and don byron are terrific here, another reason why this is a keeper.) and about duncan sheik; i think his modest voice runs out of expression about halfway through refuge, but i'm growing very fond of his court and spark (nice and short). i've been taping this show so much that i often just turn the vol all the way down and listen to a cd on computer. but i love to listen to the first 5 songs of the second act, from joy askew on 'coyote' to chaka's 'hejira, with john kelly, eric anderson and jane between. it's an incredibly strong sequence of songs, and i love the performances. patrick np - joy - coyote bob encored about the encore: Then the >real treat, Joni herself comes onstage and the band and ensemble close out >with Help Me, which in this incarnation should be subtitled Bring Me a >Lyric Sheet...I suppose you and I could get stage fright and muff line >after line of a Joni song, especially with Joni standing there in front of >us, but it's enough to make you squirm...after all, this was Joni's biggest >hit, you'd think SOMEONE from the ensemble there to sing Joni's songs could >pull it off.
