Almost as good as an All Blacks victory, eh Helen? 2. Victor's account of listening to CSN&Y's "Deja Vu" in Mexico. A glimpse into a profound personal musical (mystical?) experience. Hope you enjoy the concert next year, Victor. (From your email address I guess you would have to be a Nick Drake admirer too.) Thanks to both of you for sharing these experiences. A Tape of You booklet: Wally had a fundraiser quite a while ago, offering a beautiful booklet of "A Tape of You" which accompanies Tape Tree #4. I offered to take over this project for him, to try to ease some of the burdens he has to deal with right now, and I am offering this booklet on Wally's behalf for a minimum donation to Wally of $5. Of course, you can always send more if you can. As before, the check can be made payable to Wally Breese, and sent to: Ashara Stansfield P.O. Box 215 Topsfield, MA 01983 Please include where the booklet can be sent, and your e-mail address. Wally's description of this booklet: "The tribute tape booklet has a full-color, glossy cover designed by Jim Johanson and myself and includes a beautiful photograph of Joni taken by Leslie Mixon. Inside are 24 pages which, along with a few lovely and appropriate drawings, contain 34 paragraphs, one from each participant about the particular JM song they contributed to the tapes. This is the same booklet which Joni held in her hands and liked so much that she sent a second set to her mother for archiving. This version will be slightly expanded by submissions from the 2 or 3 people who missed the first print deadline." You can view the booklet cover at: Tribute tape booklet Video Trees: You can read all about the Tape Tree videos 1 & 2, and can get a list of what is on them, by going to: JMDL Tape Trading Information The limited PAL versions that I offered are the European format that I had to get especially made for the non-US listers. If you are interested in this format, just follow these instructions: 1) Please send $25 in US funds to me at the same address as above. 2) Please include 3 easy to read, printed address labels, addressed to where you would like the videos sent. 3) Add a note with your name, and e-mail address. Actually, since there are only 7 left, e-mail me first, and reserve one. Mail the money out *after* you have refceived a confirmation from me. Please remember that this is my cost for having them made out in this format, and sending them to you. No profit is beign made in this transaction. If you are in the US, or have a US-format machine and want these videos: This is what I need from you: 1. one PADDED envelope, big enough to hold 2 VHS tapes 2. Address THIS envelope to yourself, WITH postage (stamps- NOT the white label postage) 3. Enclose your blank tapes in this envelope, (highest quality for best results) do NOT seal. Also, please enclose a slip of paper with your name, e-mail address, and a note saying "For Video Trees 1 & 2". 4. Place that envelope INSIDE a second envelope, slightly larger than the first. This one does not need to be padded. 5. Address this envelope to me at the above address, and send! I will send them back as soon as I can. Please be patient, as my life is a very hectic one. :-) Hugs, Ashara http://www.photon.net/lightnet ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 25 Oct 1999 04:46:21 -0800 From: "P. Don't get me started - it's too early in the morning to get laughing that hard! (Were you by any chance REALLY hungry the first time you heard that?) I can see how you might think it though - now that you mention it, it does sound kind of gravy-ish. Sometimes Joni pronounces things in what, to me, is a rather strange way. As in "Polly-Otchy" summer frocks in Otis and Marlena. I guess maybe it's because I studied Italian in school (as well as German, French and Spanish) and it drives me nuts when people mispronounce words like that (even though Joni is still my idol). It's Pa-LYA-chi (sort of, you've got to put the "l" and the "y" sound together as one sound, kind of like the "lli" in "million", but not quite.) Come to think of it, I'd want to pronounce it "Mar-LAY-nuh" as in Dietrich, rather than "Mar-LEE-nuh", but what do I know? People can pronounce their own names any way they like. I am in heaven! Incident #3 No Joni Content but I was watching the Sunday Morning program (the one formerly hosted by Charles Kuralt) and they had a fascinating story about "Mrs. Mingus". Apparently Mingus' wife goes around to record stores and steals any bootleg Mingus CD's. If she gets caught she tells the store owner to call the police and the TV stations and the newspapers and tells them she will make a stink about them selling bootleg Mingus albums. If a CD says "Charlie Mingus" you know it is bootleg because he hated to be called Charlie. All the real albums should say Charles. She has also managed a couple of jazz bands who play Mingus tunes in NYC and have helped to establish a new popularity for Mingus. Overall a very good Joni weekend! I have such an attachment to the early Joni songs because they were the first I learned in her first songbook eons ago. I always had a burning curiousity how the unreleased ones sounded. Since getting to hear some on the 2nd Fret sets, I have been pleasantly surprised that they sound pretty much as I thought they would from plunking them out on the piano years ago. But a few, like Moon in the Mirror, remain a mystery to me. I think a great project for you ;-) would be to record some of these for us and we can distribute via tape tree or something. It would at least give us some idea of how the songs are supposed to sound and I don't imagine Joni is going to release or re-record them anytime soon ;-) > NP: Sunny Goodge Street - Judy Collins (perhaps the best song ever penned by Donovan... note the >lyric: '...breaking their eyes on the Mingus mellow fantastic... my, my they cry...' Yes, yes, my, my! I ADORE this song! She proclaims great love for the novelists and poets that have influenced her own writing, like John Berger, Flannery O'Connor and poet Sharon Olds. And what of musicians? "Yes, Joni Mitchell was a huge influence, I'll admit it," laughs Brooke. "But so was Chaka Khan! - go figure." >> I used to catch occasional gigs in the Amherst/Northampton, Mass. area of Jennifer and Jonatha, later The Story. They got their start at Amherst College, which is practically in my backyard. My favorite local radio station gave them a lot of airplay even before they hit it big as The Story. It was obvious even in the early days that they were headed for big places. I don't hear *anything* about Jennifer Kimball, though. I wonder what has happened to *her* career? I particularly loved them as The Story and though I think Jonatha Brooks is very talented, I was not as impressed with 10 Cent Wings as I was with Grace and Gravity by The Story. But then again, I'm usually disappointed initially when artists pull away and go solo. Sometimes it takes repeated exposure to convince me. For example I still cling to the "goodness" (if not greatness) of 10,000 Maniacs and I don't yet feel that Natalie Merchant's solo work comes close to what she achieved with those guys. Regarding Sharon Olds... she is my absolute favorite poet since Anne Sexton. She packs the most powerful punch of any poet I've read in recent years. Intense, graphically sexual and so gut-wrenchingly and painfully honest as to sometimes cause me to pull my eyes away from the words in the book, somewhat the way one takes their eyes away from the screen when viewing something intense in a medium such as film. She's totally, mindblowingly amazing. Jennifer released her first solo album earlier this year. "Veering From The Wave" is a collection of Jen's own songs and marks her first effort at playing guitar and strumstick. There are a couple of really fine songs on this CD. I especially like "Meet Me in the Twilight" and "Kissing in the Car." They're kind of uptempo and catchy. Overall, this album sounds a lot more "Storyesque" than what Jonatha is turning out lately...if you liked the early "Story" sound I think you'll feel right at home with "Veering," although I feel the second half of the CD bogs down a little with a sameness. While their parting was marked with some bitterness, Jennifer gives thanks to Jonatha in the liner notes...." to Jonatha Brooke for so many years of beautiful songs..." To which I would add, "to Jennifer AND Jonatha, thanks for all the beautiful songs..." :-) Scott ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 25 Oct 1999 21:21:50 -0700 From: RAVEN@igc.org Subject: Re[2]: Jonatha, Joni and Chaka (SJC) Terry sent this Jonatha Brooke reference: >And what of musicians? "Yes, Joni Mitchell was a huge influence, >I'll admit it," laughs Brooke. "But so was Chaka Khan! - go figure." I think Joni's influence is easy to hear, both lyrically and musically ... I'm not sure I hear Chaka's, but my experience with Chaka is mostly old RUFUS tracks... OTOH, I can easily hear the influence of Kevin Gilbert. Gina wrote of Jonatha and Jennifer: >I used to catch occasional gigs in the Amherst/Northampton, Mass. >area of Jennifer and Jonatha, later The Story. >It was obvious even in the early days that they were headed for big >places. I don't hear *anything* about Jennifer Kimball, though. >I wonder what has happened to *her* career? Jennifer disappeared for awhile, but she's been an emerging performing songwriter in the northeast for a few years. Even in The Story, Jennifer did none of the writing and played no instruments, so her career as a performing songwriter had to wait a couple years while she taught herself guitar. A few years ago she started performing her own songs around Boston and the northeast and released her first CD last year... she also appears on the *excellent* 2-CD compilation called "RESPOND" which is a benefit CD containing tracks from 27 women singer/songwriters from the Boston area... more info at: Jennifer writes songs with complex melodies/harmonies, very much like those she's known for performing with Jonatha, and many people in the business have been raving about her first release "Veering From The Wave"... next week she starts a mini-tour in Florida (and NC and GA)... you can learn more on her website: I have seen Jennifer perform live... while I enjoyed her music and her stage presence, I found her music's complexity exceeded her skills as a guitarist, although I expect it's only a matter of time before her guitar skills catch up with her writing. OTOH, Jonatha's music has taken some *major* moves away from what she did with Jennifer, and her writing (and guitar technique) is adventurous and challenging... some of "10-cent Wings" took time for me to fully appreciate. As Gina said, it's *very* different from what she did with The Story... but her live shows give me goosebumps!
