Yes it is an inspiring and overwhelming thing to listen to Joni and then try it oneself...I still do that sometimes but it has occurred to me: When I'm painting I rarely look at other painters unless I'm doing a copy of them...I usually listen to music and usually the music doesn't have any words or at least none that I can understand (Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan, Tuatara, Harmonic Choir, Michael Hedges, Os Mutantes etc). I play music to complement my painting (I was even trying to build soundtracks for my paintings at one point and recently I have been cutting the face and sides out of guitars, installing a convex mirror in the back behind the soundhole and collaging the remaining insides...music becoming my visual art). I have noticed that the way Joni paints (recently), subject matter, composition, impressionist technique has a direct link to her lyrics, chord layering, rhythms, melodies and form. Taming of the Tiger, I think, is perhaps her most painterly album to date ("I wish I had a VG8") with its layers, translucent forms, aqueous rooms and emerging and folded light. From noticing this about Joni's painting and music it has given me greater strength in all of my forms of expression - especially my visual and musical arts. For the sake of sharing, here is some of my lyrics that I'm proud of setting to music: Angels and vampires Both want to become human but humans just want to become Angels and vampires Both want to become human but humans just want to become... Fetus surrounded by blood and tissue and bone Halo on its head the undead just looking for a home The full moon Setting over the water Through the trees Tugging at my insides Tugging at my bones Feeling its gravity But the weight of the world Pulls it all back to me Pulls me back to my bed While I wait on this world By a thread Angels and vampires Both want to become human but humans just want to become Angels and vampires Both want to become human but humans just want to become... I feel my eyes roll Towards heaven As this noise in my groin Sinks like a stone I'm just looking Looking for a home But the full moon Setting over the water Through the trees Tugging at my insides Tugging at my bones Feeling its gravity But the weight of the world Pulls it all back to me Pulls me back to my bed While I wait on this world By a thread Angels and vampires Both want to become human but humans just want to become Angels and vampires Both want to become human but humans just want to become... copyright JMP's Song '96 (Don't worry folks I wrote this a while back and I'm feeling quite fine now) In closing, I must say that I just love being a part of a family (JMDL at the hub of this particular tribe) of artists of all shapes, sizes and all levels of obscurity and lime-lit brilliance because you all feed me and let me know that I'm not alone....that I'm a part of something larger than simply my life (chicken scratchin' for a piece of immortality...no less). Hey Gina- Thanks! I am so glad you and your family are enjoying the music! "Different from the Rest" is indeed the cat song I mentioned. The song is *the* most requested of all my songs in concert... (and to think I had the song for years without recording it because my bass player and co-producer both said it was too dumb...) Anyway... I've been enjoying the current thread about song-writing, so I thought I'd include the lyrics to Aslan's song. DIFFERENT FROM THE REST When you rub your fuzzy face on mine, it just turns me inside out. You seem to think you're the queen of the world and in my mind... there's no doubt. Even though it looks like there is no one home when I gaze into your eyes, You don't fool me. I know you're a somebody in a furry disguise. But I say, "you are my kitty and I am your human." I always tell you, "You're the best." Because I know that you expect to hear that you are... somehow different from the rest. "More food, more food, more food, more food" is your constant complaint. "Can't you see you're starving me?" you comment with little restraint. "More food, more food, more food, more food, more food, more food... it must be absolutely fresh" You've got a figure like a barrel, still you're rubbing out your request. But I say, "you are my kitty and I am your human." Sometimes I wonder who's really in control. I know you let me think I'm the one who calls the shots As you're herding me to your dinner bowl. In and out... in and out... you're at the door one more time. In or out... out or in... you just can't make up your mind... But I get the big payoff when you consent to sit on my lap. When you're curled up, warm and fuzzy- taking yet another nap. The way you let me hold you...sometimes... as long as I don't cling. The way you sit beside me when you like the way I sing. You are my kitty and I am your human. You've seen me at my worst and at my best. Seems no matter what I do, you remain unimpressed... But I know you think that somehow, I am different from the rest. c Linda Worster 1986 ------------------------------ Date: Sun, 17 Oct 1999 11:42:20 EDT From: RMuRocks@aol.com Subject: Re: in defense of lawyers (sort of).... Bill D said: << seriously tho, i just never have felt that lawyers and loan sharks are at the top of the list of what is wrong in the world today. But we all know that Joni Mitchell Never Lies, so what gives? thoughts? >> I think I may have said this before, and Joni's certainly addressed it as well, but lawyers and loan sharks wouldn't exist without *clients*...I suppose both professions offer a useful and necessary service, but why would someone use a "loan shark" except to pay the price for their OWN runaway greed. Likewise, many use lawyers to try and circumvent the consequences of their own actions...So when she says: "Lawyers & Loan Sharks are laying America to waste" She's not LYING per se, but rather just expressing an over-generalization. "No Apologies" is an interesting song, if I look it as a painting it's almost a collage as opposed to a focused single idea. She's got the General defending the troops for raping a Japanese girl, the whole Juan/Freddy thing (whatever's up with that), and the chorus itself that barely seems to relate to any of it...maybe it's one of those "pot luck" songs where she takes some scraps and makes a musical quilt. Or, more likely, there's more there than I can see now and the significance of the song will grow as I do... Bob NP: Cornershop, "Good Shit" ------------------------------ Date: Sun, 17 Oct 1999 09:40:57 -0700 From: Leslie Mixon Subject: Joni shopping bliss I've had mixed feelings about the buying and selling of Joni related articles on ebay. I reflect on the lyric to "Banquet" - "...some get the gravy, some get the gristle..." I bid for a songbook once, because I wanted to learn the song. When the price for a book that originally sold for $5.95 went above $85, I knew I was out of the picture. Friday, my last weekday as an unemployed person,(I start my new job on Monday) I strolled downtown Santa Cruz reflecting on the 10-year anniversary since the earthquake. I remember October 17, 1989, as clear as a bell. One of the businesses that has survived is "Logos Books & Records" - new and used. One of my favorite things to do is to scan the carts with the "new" arrivals. I could not believe my eyes, the "Court & Spark" songbook - asking price $3.60. My heart practically leaped out of my mouth. Feeling "lucky" I strolled over to the LP bin and checked out the Joni section - even though I already have all the LPs - and then I saw it, "lights out in georgia" - price $15. This is enough to inspire me to pick up the old guitar again and try to develop callouses. It's intimidating since I'm married to a very accomplished musician - even though he's very supportive, I think, "I'll stick to singing - why should I even embarrass myself with a stringed instrument in front of him?" Although I could always practice when he's not home. Anyway, there are still moments of Joni shopping bliss to be had... Lawyers are no different than any other factor in society. they are invaluable and do much good. On the other hand there is no doubt that they have their own proprietary interests and make obscene amounts of money in tort litigation and have fought tooth and nail to prevent reform of Tort litigation law. States which have limited Lawyers fees and damages in medical malpractice have lower medical costs for all citizens. States with unlimited damages have the highest costs of medical care in the country. This is not good for the people. The tort lobby has spent millions to fight reform simply because they love those billion dollar judgements of which they get hundreds of millions of dollars in fees. This is just one example. But who really thinks that to rid the country of lawyers would be a good thing? As for loan sharks....the classic loan shark will loan money to those who can not get a loan because they cant possibly qualify (rare in the world today) but then they lodge physical threats towards the person when they cant meet the extortionary loan rates (like 50% a month). Whats interesting to me is the the real loan sharks in the world today are the banks with their fees, but Joni doesnt mention them. ------------------------------ Date: Sun, 17 Oct 1999 13:39:08 -0400 From: Vince Lavieri Subject: Vinnie in the Pulpit NJC Bob our favorite Sunday School teacher, in a recent epistle, writes: > > I'm assuming in my ignorance that Corinthians was originally written in > Hebrew? I see the focus of this song as being on a mode of behavior or attitude rather than a specific event or group of people. She's talking about a bullying, destructive impulse that seems to drive the specific incidents and people she mentions in the song. I do think she personalizes more than is good for the getting across of her message, though. The references to Freddy & Juan (which I think most probably refers to Jann Wenner as someone has previously suggested) and also to lawyers seem to me to be Joni doing some personal axe-grinding. Sort of detracts from any point she might be trying to make about the destructive behaviors of people in power. Makes it seem kind of petty. The song really starts out strong with the verse about the Japanese girl but unfortunately it doesn't follow through.... Certainly cold weather was a part of the holidays. My first Christmas in Seattle was kind of odd. I liked the mild winter weather. The last winter I spent in Iowa, we had a blizzard before Thanksgiving and there was snow on the ground til about April. I had had it with Old Man Winter. But getting back to that first Christmas in Seattle, I knew very few people out here & couldn't afford to go back to Iowa so I basically spent that first Xmas alone. I absolutely *forbade* myself to listen to 'Blue' by the way, because I knew the song 'River' would make me more morose than I wanted to be. Other people love this song & say it comforts them. All it ever did was depress me. Oh well. 'A Case of You' and 'Blue' on the other hand, I find very cathartic. But not 'River' although I do like Dianne Reeves version. It somehow is less dreary than Joni's. Maybe it has something to do with growing up on the Mississippi in Iowa and old stories that you long to return to the river for the rest of your life if you leave it. (A lot of bunk, btw. Copies are available from either Jeff at : jyoung8471@aol.com or Frank at : fajpagano@compuserve.com Great album from a great band! Henry" Subject: in way of proof... hi Les, glad the advertisement came through ok. Wally was finally able to open it also. I think it was the paper that misspelled Joni's name. how about that 'steep' admission price? wow! ;o) when I first joined jmdl last december, I guess partly because some others had misrepresented themselves as being acquainted with Joni, some people were understandably pretty skeptical and I'm sure that many still take just about everything I post with a generous 'grain of salt' because of it... but others, and most especially you, always gave me the benefit of the doubt. in response to that extended trust I just want to say thanks... and, at long last, since I just recently, finally got this stuff scanned, provide some substance to my claims for you and all to see. the following is an abbreviated message I wrote to Wally yesterday when he notified me that he was finally able to open the attachment of the ad, including links to the 'evidence': "Wally, great! I'm so glad I was able to get it to you! ... I'm... inclined to think (that it appeared in the Port Huron Times Herald late in) '66 judging by the amateur look of it and the fact that, as soon as we could, we were including pictures in all the ads. it's really too bad that was the only one Brian (Moss) had to send me. I know we ran similar ads up with stills of Chuck and Joni and each individually and I'm pretty sure my name appeared on some with Joni too. anyway, I finally got these things uploaded... here's the ad I sent you at: http://homepages.go.com/homepages/b/a/d/badwolff/joniad.JPG that ad is the only thing I have that is specifically Joni, but also of possible interest is this similar ad featuring Chuck's old duet partner, Loring James: http://homepages.go.com/homepages/b/a/d/badwolff/loringad.JPG also, here is an early article about the Cellar where both Brian and I are mentioned prominently: http://homepages.go.com/homepages/b/a/d/badwolff/article.JPG and the picture which accompanied it which shows me onstage playing my gorgeous old D28 which Joni also played on more than one occasion: http://homepages.go.com/homepages/b/a/d/badwolff/stage.JPG I hope you can access these links as I just posted them and sometimes these places are weird and keep them for review for a few days before they publish them. I wish I had some of those other ads... take care, pat" if you look closely, even though the newspaper pic is really blurry and poor resolution... http://members.wbs.net/homepages/b/a/d/badwolff/pat-stage.JPG and even though this one was taken some 30 years later... http://members.wbs.net/homepages/b/a/d/badwolff/wolff.JPG I think you can still see that it's me. as far as proof goes, well, I guess anything can be faked on the web and it's all just cyberspace after all, and, even though both brian and mike have both come forward and verified my stories, I suppose some will continue to disregard me as a fake, regardless. at any rate, for you and those who have extended their trust to me, I hope these are enjoyed as interesting pieces of Joni history. take care, pat NP - Eastern Rain http://members.wbs.net/homepages/b/a/d/badwolff.html Angelfire for your free web-based e-mail. http://www.angelfire.com ------------------------------ End of JMDL Digest V4 #466 ************************** The Song and Album Voting Booths are open!
