I am thinking a lot about human beings and where they're coming from and why they do what they do, as a result of the training I'm doing (as you may know, I'm training to be a psychosynthesis counsellor, psychosynthesis being a branch of transpersonal psychology). While hastening to add that I am only a year into the training and do not claim to have all the answers, I believe those men didn't hate Matthew Shepard in the sense that we might hate someone who has made our life a misery, hurt someone we love, swindled us out of all our money, or anything like that. It simply does not compute. Irrational hatred (and that is what I believe homophobia, xenophobia, misogyny etc are) seems to be more about what the hater thinks about himself or herself. Scratch a homophobe and you may well find someone who is confused by or frightened of their own sexuality (this applies to several people I know very well). Scratch someone who manifests violent, irrational hatred or contempt of their fellow human beings, and you may well find someone who's been dealt a bum hand in life, or feels they have, and/or has low self-esteem. I don't know how much sense this is making, but I do know that if you confront an irrational hater and ask them why they hate gays/blacks/Jews/women or whoever, you will rarely get an answer that makes sense even in its own terms. And what about the homophobe who has gay friends? If he (and it seems to be "he" more than "she") hates gay people, then logically he should hate ALL gay people. However, it is an illogical hatred, and so normal rules don't apply. Sorry for rambling and for any psychobabble. It's a subject that exercises me a hell of a lot, and an incident like Matthew Shepard's murder raises pretty important questions about human nature. Sorry for rambling and for any psychobabble. It's a subject that > exercises me a hell of a lot, and an incident like Matthew Shepard's murder raises > pretty important questions about human nature. I don't have any background in the study of psychology - just personal life experience and observation - and for me, also, part of the answer to these questions always goes back to the self-esteem of the individual. I recall the study of self-esteem getting a bad rap a few years back - that is was some kind of soft, touchy-feeling kind of psychobabble, unworthy of serious consideration. I disagree and think that lack of self-esteem is at the root of a lot of irrational and destructive behavior. Another aspect or element that I've always found scary is "mob mentality" where the pack gives each other a perceived sense of safety in numbers and justification to them spur on to acting out their irrational hatred. Many people just shrug their shoulders and say "well, that's just human nature" but that explanation has never satisfied me. Thanks for the nice music, Linda!) ------------------------------ Date: Sat, 16 Oct 1999 17:56:23 EDT From: CarltonCT@aol.com Subject: song writing On the thread on song writing, I think the most important precondition to write a good one is to have something you need to express. It starts with a feeling, and the feeling leads you to some chords you like, a melody that matches the mood, and eventually a key phrase around which the lyrics can be built. Uneventful times of general content are the worst times for writing songs. Times of great joy, great sadness and strong feeling are the best times. It's also been helpful for me to go back into "unfinished business" from the last few years and write about that -- to express something I've always wanted to about the important people in my life. Sometimes I'll be playing chords and finding a tune and something from my past will resurface - -- that's what the song is about! I was playing some melancholy chords a few weeks ago and thinking about Matthew Shepard, this being the one year anniversary of his slaying. The song about him soon followed. I've only written one song in standard tuning (which I treated as if it were an open tuning) because open tunings are just too beautiful. They have unexpected qualities, lots of interesting drones, strange sympathetic notes and a greater range of emotional qualities. The tunes that are wrought from open tunings are usually more interesting because they are often made up of what I call happy accidents. A lot of times I'll be in bed or driving on the freeway and I'll hear the resolution for some tune. Or I'll hear a chord I know I want, and that I know I can get from the tuning that I've begun to think in. It's the same with words too -- the next stanza of something may just blossom in your head when you are taking a shower -- or somebody says something that gets you unjammed. It's very helpful to have a rhyming dictionary. A lot of times you'll find a rhyme you like, but you aren't sure how it works into your song. That can push your imagination. Sometimes, it's a matter of taking a phrase and reversing the order of its words which makes it different and catchy and able to rhyme with the next phrase. When I hear other people's songs at open mikes, I'm struck by how few of them take time to develop a theme or some imagery in their songs, an inward build, some inner rhymes or interesting word play. All in all, it's a painstaking process. It's taken me a week to six weeks to write an individual song, to let it come to you in its own sweet time. You need patience and perseverance, but everyone who has ever wanted to should do it. It's a wonderful feeling to write a song, no matter the end result. Like anything, you get better as you go along. You should write them for *yourself, first* whether or not you can sell them to some other act. You should be like Sharon and sing them for your friends and your family -- people usually can listen to about three of them before losing interest. And if it's a love song, you should sing it for who you wrote it for. Who wouldn't like to hear that? Listening to Joni during the writing process can both intimidate you and inspire you. But I think the reason she has been a fount of brilliant and original songs has a lot to do with the incredible life she has lead. Being a nine to fiver in the same locale all your life isn't going to bring the same stimulus as being a world traveler and adventurer. But more importantly, it's strong feelings that are the real source of all "inspired" works. Last weekend I was on a mini-Hejira, and of course, I brought some Joni with me to listen to in the car. I listened to lots of incredible music as I rolled through picturesque Steinbeck country. But going from STAS to HOSL, I found myself once again amazed at the depth and breadth of Joni's genius, and for the moment was thinking -- why would I want to listen to anyone else? A little bit of both, but the intention was initially innocent. That first Led Zep album is one of my all time favorites and to this day evokes very strong memories for me. I'd just received in the mail a replacement copy I'd recently ordered. The last two days I've been just wallowing in the wonderful CSN box set and the music transported me back to memories of a very special and unforgettable "Strange Boy" who introduced me to both the first Led Zep and CSN album the summer of 1969. (He also intro'ed me to Hendrix, Jeff Beck and Tolkien, bless his soul). So in my time warp frame of mind this morning, I reached for the Zeppelin when I sat down to post and then realized the appropriateness of the those titles ;-) Kakki NP: Time Don't Matter Anymore - Mac McAnally (total true coincidence!) ------------------------------ Date: Sun, 17 Oct 1999 01:39:55 -0400 From: waytoblu@mindspring.com Subject: Oh Yes!!! back from the yEsshoW which was absolutely incredible! I was standing no more than 10 feet from Steve Howe in this small venue, The Tabernacle, which used to be a church and still has pipes from the pipe organ that was once there lining the wall behind the stage. The show had barely begun and I was thinking how cool it was that we were able to walk right in and be that close without having to push our way through like I did so many times in the early 80's at Iron Maiden concerts and such....just then some guy pushed into me a few times from behind and then collapsed on the floor. Someone helped away. I suppose his night was over. The highlight of this show for me was their performance of "Awaken" from Going for the One and "And You and I"....I think I was literally in a trance during those songs...I enjoyed being right in front of Steve Howe also and seeing his hands...his playing was so flawless and exciting to actually see in person, even though he never smiled once during the whole show...he had this serious, concentrated look on his face the whole time which I guess is just his way(sort of like how Robert Fripp sits at the very back of the stage at King Crimson shows) though Chris Squire was obviously enjoying himself letting a few laughs out and Jon Anderson was himself as usual. It was strange when Billy Sherwood, the 30 something guitarist they picked up was featured on a few tunes and was playing in front of all these guys who are close to 50 with their receding hairlines and pot bellies(at least Chris Squire anyway, Steve Howe is kind of skinny) and here's this young guy with spiked up hair...it was just sort of an interesting image. I was really glad I got to see them since I know they won't be around forever( a thought which was maybe reinforced by their addition of these younger players, Igor and Billy). It makes me think of the elves going to the shores to catch a ship out West, leaving middle earth to go to the havens... Their new material sounded awesome as well. Definately go see them if you get a chance. I was truly taken back in time...they sounded as great as they have ever sounded to me.
