Historically, she seems to follow her artistic muse rather than her commercial one. When she does appear on TV, it's not an exploitative appearance but rather she goes where she's appreciated. When she plays a benefit, she selects music appropriate for the occassion, not just what the public wants to hear. She's so brave in that respect, sometimes I wish she wasn't so she could have a broader fan base, but that's the way she is... Again, that's why I'm excited about her standards project. She's not doing it purely commercial reasons, but rather because it's how she feels artistically led at this juncture of her career. My hope is that through this release she will get some long-overdue commercial recognition and we can all runaround telling everyone "See! I've already expressed my condolences to Eric but Helen, you may have a point about long-haired tabbies. I have one cat who is actually a long-haired tortoise shell (but to me they're actually just mutant tabbies!) who does NOT want her tail touched. Makes it truly difficult at combing time. She does get really pissed off, but she doesn't bite or scratch, just howls and yowls and growls her fool head off - I think it's actually pretty funny. She talks the talk, but she don't walk the walk. Desite her only weighing half what my other cat does (this one is a short-haired torty who hates to be touched at all except at night-time when she waits for me to go to bed and likes to sleep next to me) the little one is afraid of nothing. She has walked right up to a big dog and stared it down without raising a claw. It's very rare for this puddy tat to bite or scratch anyone ever and she puts up with a lot of crap from the kids, but her tail is her pride and joy - don't touch da tail! I had a cat once, pure white, very psycho, who was very affectionate with me only - she wouldn't go near anyone else. She would sit on my shoulders or even on my head. She did sometimes have the habit though of springing out at people's legs from behind a piece of furniture, scaring the hell out of them. Because of her attack methods, I named her Cato - not after the Latin fella, but after Inspector Clouseau's sidekick. cateri@hotmail.com ______________________________________________________ Get Your Private, Free Email at http://www.hotmail.com ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 13 Oct 1999 16:17:01 GMT From: "Catherine McKay" Subject: Re: Fwd:Re: Lurker Days (SJC) That was well put, Lori and it's good to hear from you. I like the de-lurk idea. If there's anyone out there who feels they're afraid to say something in front of everyone, welcome to the club. The first time is the hardest, and it gets somewhat easier after that. But only somewhat. I still wonder, every time I send one of these things out there into cyberspace, why I did it and wonder why anyone out there would be interested in hearing my views on anything. (I am not worthy! I am not worthy!) However, anyone's opinion is as good as the next ones, and you learn a little bit from everyone whether or not you agree with them. I always find something in what others have to say and, if the only thing it does is to trigger a completely different idea, that's good enough for me. A while back, I had a reply sent to me in private from someone who wanted to express their opinion about something I had said, who didn't seem to agree with me (although I'm not totally sure!) and I guess what I should have done is to suggest to them that they don't respond just to me, but to the whole group because their opinions are at least as good as mine (and maybe, God forbid, even better!) Instead, what I did was to respond to them rather snarkily and then to delete their e-mail. OK, so I was in a bad mood that day, but it bugged me that someone out there was reading MY rants and only popped up once to respond to me personally rather than sharing it with the class. Not fair, I say. If I get to make a fool of myself in public, then everyone else has the right to do so as well. Hoping that THIS particular rant doesn't either scare anyone off, or prompt any more responses to me that aren't copied to the group, I remain, yours very truly, Catherine What's-'er-name. cateri@hotmail.com ______________________________________________________ Get Your Private, Free Email at http://www.hotmail.com ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 13 Oct 1999 14:27:41 -0300 From: "Wally Kairuz" Subject: out to get me some...njc sue mac asks: > That's a good thread...who do you immediately buy as soon as the product > hits the street besides Joni? suzanne vega, rickie lee, carole king, aimee mann, jill sobule, the sundays [if they ever release anything again], any reissues with karen carpenter on it, any new version or reissue/remaster/repackage of turandot, tristan und isolde, salome, elektra and the ring cycle. but then i have two or three on my wish list that i would run straight out of the shower and into the streets to buy if they were ever released on cd: nested, laura nyro peter yarrow's first album gwyneth jones's london turandot. wallyk, who fulfilled lori's prophecy and didn't go to sleep at all last night ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 13 Oct 1999 17:39:05 GMT From: "Catherine McKay" Subject: Re: Fwd:Re: Lurker Days (SJC) Bob asks Jan, "Is any of your art on the web? If I recall correctly, I think Annie's intention with Medusa was to specifically record songs written and originally performed by male artists and bands. No More I Love You's was by a wonderful Scottish duo called The Lover Speaks, whose (only) album I bought the day after seeing them support the Eurythmics in concert around Xmas 1986. I only knew Take Me To The River through the Talking Heads version, but as that is male anyway it doesn't maake too much difference to the concept if it's not the original :-) Then Procul Harum, Neil Young, The Clash. Who did I Can't Get Next To You??? At this moment in time, I can't think who it could have been. I didn't realise Thin Line Between Love And Hate WASN'T a Chrissie Hynde song, until it was pointed out in a interview with Annie at the time. Apparently, it was first done by a male vocal group in the late 50s or early 60s. The Downtown Lights is, in its original form, my favourite song of all-time (by my favourite band of all-time, The Blue Nile), again another Scottish band with connections to Annie's previous work. Then Bob Marley and Paul Simon complete the album. Paul Simon's Something So Right is simply divine, and for all her efforts I don't think Annie quite equals it. Medusa is a good album, far from my favourite Annie/Eurythmics records, but an interesting diversion. She made "No More I Love You's" her own, and gave Whiter Shade Of Pale and Waiting In Vain a glossy overhaul that is very appealing to these ears at least. Now, thank heavens, Eurythmics are back together, and I can look forward to a brand new album in 7 days' time.....it's been too long coming. (laura and i'd just seen laurie anderson's 'moby dick') his next project is similar to 'joni's jazz', a play-through of prince's album '1999', just a couple of days before the millenium. through a stupid fiasco i'd failed to get tix and it sold out, but he told me they've added a second show on 12/12/99. thank god. danny also recently produced a joy askew gig at joe's pub here in ny, a major thing for her in which her guests included joe jackson. i'd met danny briefly there. tonight, i was afraid to tell danny that this record of the event has come into my life, but here i admit it. and i hope to spread the music. like kakki and everyone else i'm crazed right now, but i'll copy the two tapes for the next 4 people in the eastern seaboard who contact me privately offlist. please expect to wait at least two to three weeks for tapes, i am the proud owner of two new jobs, three performance subscriptions, 4 tape-recording projects for friends, and even a life once in a while. i'm also emailing a couple of friends offlist. patrick np - john kelly - amelia kakki continued before she had heard erin's version of 'blue motel room': Erin Hamilton is very impressive, too >(she has her >mama Carol's big voice ;-) > what did you think of her on 'blue motel room'? i'm listening to part ii of the show for the first time, but if the tape comes close to my memory of her, i'll be completely verklemmpt during erin's rendition of 'blue motel room'. ------------------------------ End of JMDL Digest V4 #458 ************************** The Song and Album Voting Booths are open!
