I have a long-haired tabby myself (Sam) who is nearly 12, and I live in dread of something happening to him. But there must be something about long-haired tabbies. Sam is exactly like Tac - will tolerate being petted for a short while, then attacks with huge ferocity, and I have the scars up my arms and on my ankles to prove it! Attack Cat is so appropriate! I sometimes refer to Sam as "Police Cat" since he has an unfortunate liking for leaping up and grabbing my arm with all four paws, and sinking in his teeth as far as he can (like a police dog on attack). He does this at random, even when I'm asleep (I learnt early not to leave my arms outside the blankets), and he's done it to other people as well! But for all that, I love him to death - it's incredible the bond you can have with a cat, especially (as in my case) when they've been the most constant thing in your life for so long - people/cities/jobs/houses come and go, but Sam's always been there - and always will be, even if not in body - like Tac will be for you. We had to say goodbye to our black short hair with the beautiful green eyes last Friday. Her name was Sophie. Sophie came to live with Edward & myself back in '86. Her former owners were moving & couldn't take her with. We already had 2 cats & a dog but one more was welcomed. Poor Sophie was always the low one in the pecking order, though. She was with me through Edward's death and still here when Travis moved in 4 years ago. At that time Travis brought his cat, the notoriously feisty Mama Cat, to live with us and the tally was 4 cats & one dog. Mama Cat disappeared just before we went to L A for the Van Gogh & mini-Jonifest and hasn't been seen since. The oldest, Drew, had passed on a year before that. That was a very hard loss for me as Drew had been Edward's cat at the time we met. One more part of him gone. So now we are down to one cat. Sophie also had failing kidneys complicated by a hyper-active thyroid. So I understand how you feel Eric. I know how much you miss Tac caT and my heart goes out to you. HOWEVER, I admire his ability to take fairly plain words, and only sligthly quirky chords and create some masterpieces. I was amazed when I first listened to the double live CD at how many 'standards' he's written. On the other hand, Joni sort of turns her guitar inside out, and writes (as we all know) the most poetic, imaginative lyrics of anyone. Because of this, I can understand someone feeling that her work has a certain studied quality to it. In Suzanne Vega's defense - I understand what she means, although I hope her criticism was not intended to be as harsh as it sounded. SV's lyrics have a fluidity that make them sound conversational - although I know that SV works very hard at crafting her lyrics (possibly more that Joni, even). SV's lyrics have a sort of rawness of repetition, whereas Joni chooses her words carefully so that each one has weight. Also, SV is more about rythmn - Joni is about melody. I admire them both, but Joni is so far above everyone else (but you knew that already). I found Joni in 1972 when I dragged my boyfriend into a record store in Eugene, Oregon (Hi Russ!) in search of 'something by John Coltrane'. FTR was on. I still remember how it seeped in while I was browsing. Very seductive, isn't she? All of a sudden I felt possesed by this beautiful music I was hearing, so I turned to him and asked, "Who is that?" End of story. The next 'possession' was the first time I heard Joni's voice floating, diving, and lulling me on STAS. Maybe it was just her voice, maybe the combination of lyrics with dolfins, mermaids and periwinkle, but I felt like a warm waterfall was pouring over me. I was at a friends, I put on the headphones while he lit the candles & incence and I was transported. The rest were bought soon after, until I (sadly) got disconnected from my love of music. Next to Joni Mitchell the lieder [songs] of Franz Schubert are very dear to me. well I am in.... And a question! What are the other two albums that I dont have? I just happen to know where to pick up that old Partridge Family bus, and we can get it for a song. We can also get the real life Danny Bonaduce to play bass for us, something he actually learned to do once the show got canceled. He's a great guy, and I've cured him of his homophobic tendencies -- I believe he is even dating Rufus Wainwright. Maybe we can get Dallas Reeves or Leslie West from Mountain on back-up. They opened a bakery together a while ago and are bored and itching to get back into music. Have to add my two cents on AMERICAN BEAUTY which I think is the best American movie in a decade, but would have to agree that the female characters were a little short changed in their development. I actually think the character Annette Bening played was right on target -- the upscale suburbanite who works desperately hard to sustain an image to which she is overly attached. I think that unfortunate tendency is neither male or female. But the teenage daughter was the least developed character -- it wasn't clear why she had simpatico with her videographer/dope smoking neighbor. Did she have the same extreme sensitivity he had, his connection to the present and perception of beauty behind the most ordinary things? The daughter was a bit of a blank, and as someone mentioned, all too eager to attach herself to someone else. And as much as I identified with that young man (being a film head myself) I don't know how much I would like to look out my window some night and see my name spelled out in fire. Then again ... Anyway, the film does an extraordinary job of showing just what kind of secrets lurk behind the doors of the most normal looking suburbanites and how frequently our passions are squelched and our souls are destroyed when we place money and status above genuine happiness. I had no idea that song was written by Neil Young. If I'm not mistaken, the Medusa album says very little about who wrote what and doesn't give much credit anywhere. Anyway, I've looked all over and find nothing. For a lover of all the extra stuff that comes in a package (like lyrics! who wrote the song, and who played on it), that's gotta be really annoying. I can't understand why anyone would release an album without that information and though I love that one, it just irritates me every time I hear it and want to find out more about who wrote this song or that one - 'cuz maybe I'd actually like to hear some of their stuff. cateri@hotmail.com ______________________________________________________ Get Your Private, Free Email at http://www.hotmail.com ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 12 Oct 1999 12:50:07 -0700 (PDT) From: Don Rowe Subject: RE: Crazy Cries curries disfavor 100% JC Dear Joni, It has recently come to our attention that the opening Verse of "The Crazy Cries of Love" is unsettling. My kid is only 9, but he's my kid, for God's sake. Matthew Sheppard was really a sweet-looking young man, I keep thinking about his parents and what this must have done to them to know their baby was murdered by a bunch of thugs *just because* he was gay. I cannot understand how anyone could hate anyone else so much - just because they're black, or gay, or a different ethnic group or a different religion - so much, that they would torture them and leave them to die. A sudden act of violence, a crime of passion I could understand, but to start something like that and to keep going... The darkness in some men's (and women's) minds never ceases to amaze and dismay me. Just when I think we're finally getting somewhere on the evolutionary scale to where we can appreciate each other for who we are and not for some label that some hateful group has pinned on us, some horrible crime like this happens and I realize, we're barely out of the primordial slime. God help us all, because we need it. cateri@hotmail.com ______________________________________________________ Get Your Private, Free Email at http://www.hotmail.com ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 12 Oct 1999 15:58:54 -0400 From: waytoblu@mindspring.com Subject: Re: Crazy Cries curries disfavor 100% JC >Jim asks: "In the song "Crazy Cries Of Love", the couple wants to have some >privacy whilst doing the nasty, right? He was only familiar with Wally's site and mentioned how much he liked it. His eyes lit up when he mentioned Wally's name. For those who haven't caught it, Wally did an interview with Henry back in 1996 and it remains my favorite interview on his site. It's an L.A.-Laurel Canyon nostalgia thing on my part plus he does relate some very sweet Joni tales. He wanted to know if he could get to the discussion list through Wally's site and I told him that we are connected but that the JMDL also has its own most wonderful site created by Les Irvin. He immediately wanted the web site address and wrote it down in his little black book in his beautifully caligraphic handwriting. I don't think this means he is going to join the list - he indicated that he doesn't belong to any of them because he's too busy - but I'm sure he is going to check us out a bit. Such great ‘first hand’ accounts are among the things I like about this list. I’ve never been to the US let alone a Los Angeles pool hall but she made me feel like I was there. Henry Diltz’s photographs are indeed superb and it was good news to hear that Dave Zimmer’s book is to be republished in an up-dated form next year. Here’s hoping that the proposed CSN&Y tour will swing my way down under. I haven’t heard much news about it lately but presume that, despite GN’s accident, it is still on. After reading the review item referred to by Gerald (in Melbourne) recently, I’m also looking forward to the new album. Anyway, thanks Kakki for taking the trouble to tell your tale so well. Kerouac had just returned to San Francisco after a period of solitude at Big Sur to find a letter from his mother waiting for him. He described his feelings after reading it thus: “Ordinarily the death of a cat means little to most men, a lot to fewer men, but to me, and that cat, it was exactly and no lie and sincerely like the death of my little brother – I loved Tyke with all my heart, he was my baby who as a kitten just slept in the palm of my hand with his little head hanging down, or just purring, for hours, just as long as I held him that way, walking or sitting - ... And when I’d left New York to come to my retreat in the woods I’d carefully kissed him and instructed him to wait for me ... - But my mother said in the letter he had died the NIGHT AFTER I LEFT!” [“Big Sur” chapter 11] Kerouac would have understood Eric’s feelings exactly. I am mom to eight indoor cats and two outdoor cats. Last year we lost two old beloved females, months apart, unrelated illnesses. I read the following Kinky Friedman passage at times of feline departure: “On January 4, 1993, the cat in this book and the books that preceded it was put to sleep in Kerrville, Texas, by Dr. W. H. Hoegemeyer and myself. Cuddles was fourteen years old, a respectable age. She was as close to me as any human being I have ever know. “Cuddles and I spent many years together, both in New York, where I first found her as a little kitten on the street in Chinatown, and later on the ranch in Texas. She was always with me, on the table, on the bed, by the fireplace, beside the typewriter, on top of my suitcase when I returned from a trip. “I dug Cuddles' grave with a silver spade, in the little garden by the stream behind the old green trailer where both of us lived in summertime. Her burial shroud was my old New York sweatshirt and in the grave with her is a can of tuna and a cigar. “A few days ago I received a sympathy note from Bill Hoegenmeyer, the veterinarian. It opened with a verse by Irving Townsend: "We who choose to surround ourselves with lives even more temporary than our own live within a fragile circle..." “Now, as I write this, on a gray winter day by the fireside, I can almost feel her light tread, moving from my head and my heart down through my fingertips to the keys of this typewriter. People may surprise you with unexpected kindness. Dogs have a depth of loyalty that often we seem unworthy of. But the love of a cat is a blessing, a privilege in this world. “They say when you die and go to heaven all the dogs and cats you've ever had in your life come running to meet you. “Until that day, rest in peace, Cuddles."
