First of all I loved the movie. It disturbed me but I did. Not for the faint of heart... you wrote: >Kevin Spacey's character was irresistible, but unfortunately >Annette Benning came off as an overambitious, materialistic >caricature. I thought all of the characters in the movie were essentially caricatures: happy gay and slightly effeminate neighbors, sexually frustrated husband stuck in a white collar job he hates goes through a midlife crisis, rebellious but tender daughter (with tendencies but on the cheer squad), the "whore" with the heart of gold, drug-dealing, clean cut looking white kid, and of course the previously mentioned Annette Bening character. you also wrote: >and Im growing increasingly irritated, especially in these >modern times, in seeing the "sulking-yet-good female teenager" >dramatized as "worthwhile" because she chooses the "hero," or >the deep "James Dean" outcast....(why are we women **STILL** >being defined by the men at our side---even by young filmmakers?) I am disturbed by the continuing of the trend too. But following my previous idea (and all of this is IMHO of course) I think not only was the Thora Birch character defined by who she was with, but so was just about everyone in the movie from the boy next door's mother, to his father, to Annette Bening to Kevin Spacey, even down to "the Real Estate King." So while I agree with your principle I personally didn't feel it in effect here. Of course, I'm not a woman. So I miss much of the experience which might lead you to you opinion. >Actually when I think about it, the whole movie showed most of the >female characters as fairly uninteresting, unflattering, >unsympathetic and one dimensional. Here I would agree, except for the teenage daughter who I thought was understandably frustrated. So we disagree on a few points, but I think it's great when a movie makes you think to the point of discussing it with someone on an emailing list which isn't related at all! :) Jerome ______________________________________________________ Get Your Private, Free Email at http://www.hotmail.com ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 11 Oct 1999 04:35:43 -0400 From: "Jim L'Hommedieu" Subject: Re: "American Beauty"... was: 'me, and a movie' NJC I also saw "American Beauty" this past weekend. Yeah, sure it was overstated but there's quite a bit to recommend it if you like your movies "serious". I never liked Annette Bening before but I liked her as the martini slurping mother. She looked just exactly right as she drank before, during and after each comment. I didn't like her character but I admired her as an actress. (Maybe she reminded me of my own vodka drenched Mom.) I liked that both of the main male characters appreciated life without apologizing for it. Besides, when was the last time there was a pro-pot movie? Unfortunately, yes, the women got short shrift. I didn't rain on "Thelma and Louise" because of the male caricatures, so let's let the men have a turn! Anyway, I also liked the beautiful-blonde girlfriend. I believed her when she bragged in the beginning of the film and I was surprised by her revelation at the end. Further, the last 20 minutes was better than the first hour and a half. That's rare IMHO. The direction was to blame for the melodramatic tone of most of the movie (again IMHO). I mean, who really pulls her hair and argues with herself when she doesn't sell a house??! To Julie: It's _great_ to see you posting again. Now, should I go to see "Mumford" or not?! I liked Lawrence Kazden's "Grand Canyon", "Body Heat", and "The Big Chill" so I'll probably go anyway. The song, released nine years before he was murdered in New York in 1980, came just ahead of Angels written for Robbie Williams, the former Take That star, and Queen's Bohemian Rhapsody, in voting by thousands of people by telephone and the BBC education website. It fought off competition from several Beatles classics, including Yesterday and I am the Walrus, which both appeared in the BBC's Top 10 poll. The most surprising entry was John Otway who came in at number seven with Beware Of The Flowers. Otway, who had only one top 40 hit in his career spanning more than 20 years, beat social commentators and writers such as Leonard Cohen and Joni Mitchell. Beware Of The Flowers was originally the B-side of his 1977 one and only hit, Cor Baby That's Really Free, which he recorded with Wild Willy Barratt. Otway said: "I can't believe I beat Bob Dylan. Today began the trial of the second of his accused attackers. The first one plead guilty earlier this year and is serving two consecutive life terms. I am the same age that Matt Shepard would have been right now. His death riveted me to the core. I had been living in a small world where, since my best friends accepted me , the rest of the world probably did, too. Anyhow, I'm rambling-nobody wants to be bored by my cluttered little thoughts I'm sure. As a final note, though...tomorrow night, Oct. 12, I'll be attending a vigil in honor of Matthew's life in West Hollywood, CA. Any SoCal jimdles interested in attending please email me privately. I would be happy to give you info. Say a prayer (or your equivalent to one) for Matt and for us all tonight... This is something I've been thinking a lot about lately. When people say they can accept my homosexuality because they're very tolerant people I want to say 'tolerant of what?' What is it that's so bad about me that you have to 'tolerate' it? It implies negativity. And I agree with you Wally. I don't want it. Anyway, I won't go into a long diatribe here but I just wanted to add my two cents to Wally's words. Matthew is in a much better place now, I have no doubt, but it's a rotten shame that he died the way he did and as young as he was. > > Say a prayer (or your equivalent to one) for Matt and for us all > > tonight... > > > > Jerome Say one for Matthew for me, Jerome. Tolerence used to be all we could hope for. But, perhaps with a 22 year old's naivete, I think the time has come that we can be loved and accepted in place of merely tolerated. Matt's death made that no longer a wish in my head, but a mission in my heart. A heartfelt thanks to all who have sent me messages of support and encouragement. I can't tell you how much it would mean to me. >By the way, Scott sold me a lot of Joni items about 15 years ago. Wow! That's amazing! He did tell me a story about a Joni item and gave me permission to share it with the list. There has been video tape circulating for years called "Laurel Canyon Home Movies" which is very grainy and originally shot on 8 mm film. I'm sure you have it, Maurice. I got a copy from another listmember about a year ago and have shown it to the local SoCal group. It shows Crosby, Nash, Young, Dallas Taylor and many other 60s music notables at a party in a candle-lit room smoking a lot ;-) There are also some outdoor shots of Crosby's potted plants and lots of other stuff of some of them having a silly old time. There is Joni music playing in the background. I love this tape because it is so evocative of that place in time. Anyway, Scott told me the origin of it and it's a great story. There used to be a weekly swap meet in the parking lot of the Capitol Records building in Hollywood. Joni decided to clean out her garage and had called some guy to pick a bunch of stuff up and haul it away. This guy would usually turn around and sell the stuff at the swap meet. As he was going through it, he found this film and decided to hang onto it. Apparently he later sold copies of it and it circulated from there. Last Friday - my birthday - my 15+ yo. cat died. Her name was Tac (short for Attack Cat). I met her in the barn where I worked in Mendocino, CA, back in 1984. She was SO beautiful & affectionate - a long-haired Tabby with big blue eyes. She really got into petting until I ran my hand down her tail, whereupon she clawed the shit out of me. All her long life Tac only let people pet her head & shoulders (but growlingly let me comb her all over). I fed her every day when I fed the horses & we became best buddies. When I moved out of my cabin to live in a tent for a year overlooking the Ten Mile estuary, sand dunes & Pacific, I stopped by the barn with a backpack on my shoulders & Tac followed me a half-mile up the hill. She watched as I set up my tent & when I was done, she walked in & curled up on my sleeping bag & has been with me ever since. Her kidneys have been failing for a few years but she stopped eating & drinking last week. So Friday I took her to the vet & was told that I could keep her alive a little while longer by giving her daily injections. I can't possibly describe how agonizing it was to have her "put to sleep" but I finally figured it would be selfish of me to prolong her life by subjecting her to 10 minute injections every day. I cuddled her for an hour, telling her how much I love her. When the doctor came to give her the shot, I inadvertently touched her tail & Tac scratched the hell out of my hand - a scar I'll cherish forever. I buried her in the back yard under a Yew tree (Celtic tradition to guide the departed to only-Who-knows-where) & filled the box with flowers from her favorite spot in the garden. Of all the pets I've loved in my life not one comes close to the companionship I shared with Tac caT. E.T.
