While looking around a little yesterday I found this relevant statement to the recent thread on Sire of Sorrows. From Joni's interview in Musician Mag Jan/Feb 1995: <<"Well, you know," she cautions, her voice dropping down for emphasis, "there's always a danger of reading too much into these songs. I mean, I'm not saying I'm Job. There was this one writer who was convinced that 'Sire of Sorrows' was autobiographical, I had to explain to him that the text was right out of the Bible. The Kinks, The Who, The Yardbirds, and the three group The Yardbirds spawned - Cream, The Jeff Beck Group and Led Zeppelin. It is additionally a statement of profound gratitude to George Harrison, The Beatles, The Rolling Stones, and The Jefferson Airplane, who first turned me on to Eastern melody and philosophy and forever expanded my cross-cultural consciousness. Suzanne can't hold a candle to Joni IMHO! Well, I own most of Joni's and all of Suzanne's, not because I like Suzanne more, but because Joni has so much more out there! I think it's a shame that these artists are bitching back and forth because they are all amazing, especially Joni and RLJ. There is room for all of them and they are two of my favorites. Joni and Rickie Lee were the first two "real" women artists I listened to.... the first female singer-songwriters that grabbed me and they changed the way I listened to music. From them I got into Sade, Lone Justice/Maria McKee, Shawn Colvin, Sarah McLachlan, Suzanne Vega and now a couple of dozen others including Dar Williams, Lucy Kaplansky, Tori, to name a few. I think it's strange that even artists of this caliber do the same crazy things that we do. We forget that there is room for all of us and that we all have a gift to bring to the party. I'm a Lilith Fair fanatic, being a Sarah McLachlan fanatic..hehe, and it's amazing how certain female artists bash Lilith for one reason or another. Jealousy is a funny thing....
