De Memphis a Nashville, Y'a une route qui sent bon. . . l'Blues, Y'a pas trop d'gondoles, etc., etc. But on the CD version I've just found there are no lyrics printed, and Rickee Lee and Sal Bernardi just seem to "la, la, la" their way very softly through the tune. Any of the RLJ fans know why this would be? I've seen some strange things with vinyl cf. CD's before, like three songs on one of Shona Laing's albums not appearing on the CD version, instead it had three songs from the previous album - very strange. I always assumed an "album" was an "album" regardless of what medium it's recorded on? LAHM ------------------------------ Date: Thu, 7 Oct 1999 05:43:14 -0700 (PDT) From: charles atlas sheppard Subject: Re: screensavers Greetings all: Forgive me for lurking these past few days. I have been waiting for an opportunity to introduce myself. This is as good as any. I am the webmaster and editor-in-chief of The Nepenthe Journal http://www.freespeech.org/tumbleweed and subsequently the founder of the Rickie Lee Jones Mailing list website which the screensavers can be found at http://www.freespeech.org/tumbleweed/rickie.html I joined this list for several reasons: The most important is that I love the looks of the www.jmdl.com site and aspire to that level of professionalism and interactivity towards my RLJ site. Also, I want to learn how to properly host a mailing list. I have been rather amiss, and perhaps too diplomatic or not directly involved enough in my own mailing list. I have no excuses other than being overly involved in work, art and netlife to concentrate on RLJ. I reckon I can't be accused of RLJ obessions. Rest assured, though, I am a great fan of Joni Mitchell and her music. When I first got on the net was during the Spring concerts of Joni/Bon/Van. I saw her in concert in Vancouver. Van, the next day twice. I had seen her also at The Edmonton Folk Festival a few years earlier. But I have always been a fan of hers. The reason why I created the RLJ mailing list and website was because I was always so dissapointed about not having the information readily on hand about her concerts and appearances. I thought a mailing list would solve this problem but she is as elusive as ever. But we have had certain communications in which we helped discover her unadvertised concerts. So that is a good thing. I created the screensavers which are available at http://www.freespeech.org/tumbleweed/rickie.html and am slowly working towards a joni mitchell screensaver sequel. All the images on the screensavers have been downloaded from the net, without permissions, and I have no qualms about this because I am making absolutely no money from this. (I have to admit to accepting a few gifts of tapes) Most of the screensavers were created in a one week frenzy because to me it was a new toy to play with and I was unhappy with all those screensavers out there. Now, with hindsight, I know how much better I could have created them and to take my time doing so. The next editions will allow for photo credits or sites where I have culled the photos from. I'm not sure if this will detract from the quality of such. I haven't quite learned how to create a separate photo credit page other than adding a separate .txt readme file to the program. Anyways, if y'all would like to see any particular photos in the next joni screensaver please let me know and I will try to accomodate those request. By the way, I do take requests for screensavers. So, if there is a particular artist you would like to save your monitor I will try to accomodate that. - --- Jamie Zubairi wrote: > Did anyone manage to get the screensavers from off > the Rickie LEe site? Come to find out that one Stacy Luftig, a New York based songwriter, has compiled a book called _The Joni Mitchell Companion: Four Decades of Commentary_ to be released in December of this year. It's said to be a 312 page anthology of writings, essays and reviews covering Joni's entire career. The author has already done a similar book on Paul Simon. Anywho, I was just thinking what an easy it must have been if the author had any knowledge whatsoever of Les' and our JMDL.com. As most of us know, the Joni archive of writings there is comprehensive and exhaustive. JMDL.com has been my constant Joni lit companion for a couple of years now. It's real good for free. The book will set buyers back $15 US. It will be interesting to see if there's anything in the book that isn't accessible on JMDL.com...my guess is that there won't be. Just thought I'd mention it. LAHM And I am one of those HUGE fans of hers. Her strength is her ballads. She sings them as if she's lived them. And if you saw the wonderful profile of her on CBS Sunday Morning (one of my favorite shows) then you can understand why. After a decade of stellar performances on Broadway as its leading ingenue she gained weight and was ignored by the stage. She reinvented herself as a cabaret singer after a decade of depression and alcohol and is unmatched in that genre. This is amazing to hear more stories like this. Actually, last night I thought of mentioning a personal experience along these lines, but feared being misinterpreted. Yet, these occurrences have no easy explanation. Some people may recall the Bel Air fire of 1961. It scorched and devastated miles of mountainside and hundreds of beautiful old homes of classic architectural style. The house Joni lives in now is one of those older, classic homes and was apparently spared in that fire. My parents and I had a number of friends who lived in Bel Air at the time and all but one of those family friends lost their homes. The day after the fire a friend of my mother wanted her moral support as she returned to see if anything was left in the ashes and debris. I was around 8 years old and went along with them. Their street looked like a bomb had dropped and everything was completely destroyed. This friend's house had been located right up against the mountain and in the small backyard there was a statue of Mary placed in a tiny grotto carved out of the hill. It was completely unscathed, there was no soot or ash or burns around it, even though everything else was black and charred. Even the brush and foliage immediately surrounding it was untouched and green. I remember being completely fascinated with this and kept pointing and saying "look, look". My mother's friend was still in shock from the events but did manage to briefly pause and look at it as if in a trance. As kids tend to do, I waited for an explanation from my mother or her friend but there was only silence. I just returned from my favorite guitar store, where I heard someone playing some wonderful contemporary classical music. I asked him what it was and he said "Hans Werner Henze." I'd never heard of him, but I rushed home and went to Amazon.com, where I found a recording called "Le Miracle de la Rose." When the screen came up that should have shown the cover photo of the recording, the cover to "Clouds" came up instead! I felt like some virtual soothsayer guardian angel must be sending me a message of recognition! So odd! Although it's on the other side of London, I don't doubt that it could happen on my line. I get the overland train in to Central London (the City, to be more precise) every weekday, and often they are absolutely jam-packed. There seems to be no rule about maximum numbers, as there is on buses. Slow local commuter trains pass fast intercity trains all the time. It only takes one missed signal for a catastrophe to ensue. I don't want to get all political, but I know where I'd want to point my finger when looking for the culprit, and it isn't the poor sod of a driver who missed the signal, which is apparently notoriously easy for drivers to miss and which had been implicated in 8 previous accidents, and about which numerous complaints had been made. Nothing was done. Azeem in London ------------------------------ Date: Thu, 7 Oct 1999 19:48:29 EDT From: JRMCo1@aol.com Subject: Re: Chance of a Lifetime Thanks for the info, Penny. I know that Joni is often blatent about her opinions of other artists, and I'd like to know if she has ever spoken of Stevie Nicks, as an artist or a preformer. Stevie is definately up there with some of my favourites. Her songwriting could never really be compared Joni's, but she has a unique ability to bring emotions out of you with her voice and her haunting melodies. The combination of accessibility to instant global news and an international Joni community gets me worrying and clucking like a mother hen sometimes when these catastrophes occur. I found myself spending that whole morning at work reading the updates on the BBC internet news! It is terrible that some tragedies (that could have been averted in advance by proper safety measures) have to occur multiple times before the powers that be take responsibility and effective action for preventing them in the future. The same kinds of things happen in the U.S. and it usually boils down to people wanting to save a dollar or two now, even though they risk having to pay a much greater price later. It is very frustrating and sad. Exactly the question I was about to ask, although in a more general form! We've heard Joni express her opinion about some of the younger up-and-coming female singer-singwriters, but what are her opinions of her "contemporaries"? I'm thinking of women like Stevie Nicks, Carole King, Bonnie Raitt, Grace Slick, etc., who started in the business around the same time, ie. late sixties, early seventies? I'm sure it's probably all on Wally's or Les' sites, but I'm too lazy to search! Helen ------------------------------ Date: Fri, 8 Oct 1999 00:46:27 EDT From: CaTGirl627@aol.com Subject: Re: re. I knew a lot of the songs from SAL, I love the Mingus version of Dry Cleaner - SO funky isn't it! I must say I have never heard a song as eerie as the Wolves song...Joni is amazing the way she paints a picture with her words and playing..I had chills running down my spin as I listened to it and I've never felt so uncomfortable (if that makes sense) listening to a song, that howling was just scary...I'm sure you've all discussed this song a lot before, but if any new listers would like to share their thoughts on it, I'd love to compare emotions...that way Joni slaps the strings of her guitar to paint a picture of the wolves attacking, well that's what I see...WOW. I didn't know anything about Mingus until this album and I loved the little bits of conversation inbetween the songs - what a colourful character he was...I only wish there was more of him and joni singing together like in the "muggin" snip. Despite this album being SO different to the joni work that I've grown to love (and worship) I really do like it...I respect her for going out on a limb like that, and i think it's so sad that she was ostrasized (I know that's not how u spell that, but hey) by both the folk and jazz communities. >> It's always great to hear about another fan's appreciation for this amazing album! Sometimes I feel like a cheerleader for this underdog but it truly is among Joni's most innovative works! & I don't care for most jazz. Forgive me (jmdl) for repeating myself but I think the paintings on the cover & sleeves represent Joni's finest. ;~o.... E.T.
