Reading Mark's beautiful take on Mingus really made my day! I remember waiting anxiously for that album to come out, and then buying it and the Rolling Stone issue with Joni's picture on the cover ("her first interview in 10 years!") on the same day. It struck me as a highly intelligent if a bit aloof recording at first listening: it took many years for me to realize how very beautiful it is. Now it's one of my favorites, and my reaction is more visceral and emotional. Mark, Wally, Marian, Michael, Ashara, count me in! I'd love to join Chuck as co-keyboardist for a Mingus set!! Underneath The Streetlight: She opens the record with a strong declaration of love, the exciting "you-can-do-no-wrong" feeling of new love; 2. Solid Love: She's confessed her love and discovers it returned; now she's telling the world and reassuring her lover of her feelings; 3. (You're So Square) Baby I Don't Care: She's now comfortable in the new relationship to poke a little fun, and reassure her love that even though he has flaws, she loves him, warts and all. 4. Be Cool: Doubt begins to enter in, from seeing her lover with other women, she tries to reassure herself that all is OK but if need be she can "kiss off that flaky valentine, lots of other fish in the sea"; 5. You Dream Flat Tires: Now everything is no longer cool!! She confronts him and accuses him of mishandling their relationship...his response is only "Woman she bounce back easy"... 6. Wild Things Run Fast: "She thought she had him tamed, but he was just as wild"..."What makes you run? Wild Thing, I thought you loved me"...sorta says it all 7. Ladies Man: Even though she's still in love with him, she sees him for what he is and says "I guess you learn to refuse what you think you can't handle"...She's still reflecting thoughts to him, even though she knows it's over. 8. Man to Man: Now she's reflecting a lot of the same feelings to herself, wondering if maybe she was to blame or why she can't sustain a relationship. 9: Moon at the Window: She dwells on the failed relationship; refusing to be cheered up, takes little solace in the fact that though her heart is broken the "thieves" have at least left the moon at the window. 10: Chinese Cafe/Unchained Melody: She's back to hanging out with her girlfriends, reminiscing about the good times, and sharing that nothing lasts for long, and longing for the old feelings of love, wondering whether the pain is worth the price. 11. Love: She seeks out a classic definition of love so that she can see where perhaps she went wrong and to reaffirm that love is the most important thing, the greatest beauty. Again, I like all the songs on the record, and don't think it needs to be re-arranged. But by the same token, sequencing can make or break a record sometimes...that's one of the many reasons why C&S works so well I think... Bob NP: S. Here goes WTRF -- the concept album sequencing: 1. Love -- We open with Joni in church praying for a new, and hopefully better relationship. 2. Underneath The Streetlight -- The Lord apparently does work in mysterious ways, for no sooner is the sermon over than Joni's eye is captured by the cute Jewish stranger on the corner ... wonder who HE might be? 3. You Dream Flat Tires -- Walking over to the handsome stranger, we discover why he's hanging out on the streetcorner ... it's deja vue all over again, since the handsome stranger reveals that the flat tire he has now came to him the night before in a dream. 4. You're So Square -- Hoping for something a little more mystical than car trouble, Joni chides her handsome stranger for having the mundane excuse of his flat tire for hanging out underneath that streetlight. 5. Be Cool -- The handsome stranger protests being labelled "square" ... he's just cool! 6. Ladies Man -- Joni is starting to fall under the stranger's spell, but isn't quite ready to accept that he may, in fact, be the answer to her opening prayer. 7. Man to Man -- Still trying to talk herself into it, Joni remembers her own love life as less than perfect, so why not take a chance on this handsome stranger ... it's not like she hasn't done this before! 8. Moon At The Window -- Time must fly when you're falling in love, because the next thing Joni realizes, it's nighttime, and the silvery moon is shining down on her and the handsome acquaintance -- no longer a stranger. 9. Wild Things Run Fast -- The romantic dream comes crashing to an end, as a leather goddess in full Harley regalia roars up, hoists the charming stranger onto the seat and screams off into the night. 10. The Chinese Cafe -- Fast forward 30 years, and the whole sad tale is simply being related by Joni to Karen as they swap stories from the old days over the backyard fence. __________________________________________________ Do You Yahoo!? I like the thread you established and your sequencing fits it really well. Only problem is Joni was just falling into deep love when WTRF was recorded. In fact she was even willing to take that big leap and get married again. I don't know that there's anything wrong with the sequence of tracks on WTRF. But then again I don't know that there isn't something wrong with it either. I have to admit that it isn't one of my favorites and yet when I think of individual tracks from it, I think it has some great songs on it. It's very cleverly done, but too >tricksy for me. this is a fair appraisal of a lot of todd's production, though i love technology and invention in music. but this one works perfectly for me, on every level, especially the samba-like rhythm and those killer lyrics. i once sat a good friend down to listen to xtc's 'summer's cauldron/grass' the first two songs off of 'skylarkin' which todd produced. she went 'amazing. so what.' i disagree, but i respect the viewpoint. >preferred version is Mathilde Santing's exquisite rendition on her album >Under A Blue Moon. > considering i love covers and you've mentioned her before, i'm just going to have to check this out. thanks azeem. todd's song 'compassion' is another huge favorite of mine, for the melody and singing, less so for the production. on the uneven tribute i picked up a couple of months ago, there is a beautiful piano and voice version by missy miller that has made me fall in love all over again. so great when that happens. patrick np - nusrat fateh ali khan & michael brooks - my heart, my life ------------------------------ Date: Thu, 30 Sep 1999 17:08:18 +1200 From: "Helen M. Actually I always had the feeling Joni was referring to Carole King in this song - the lyrics seem to fit (and Carole started out life as Carol) and they were both "pioneering" women in the rock'n'roll business in a way: Carol we're middle-class We're middle-aged We were wild in the old days Birth of rock'n'roll days Now your kid's are coming up straight And my child's a stranger I bore her, but I could not raise her This has probably been discussed before, and I'm way off the track - I seem to be getting my facts wrong a lot lately ;o) but does anyone else have any ideas? Absolutely. I can't say I'm a big fan of RLJ, since I only have her first album, and "The Magazine", but I love this album, and Wally's right, she does a great job on this spoken introduction to "The Weird Beast". She has a knack of speaking with the music - I'm not explaining this at all well, but I'd be interested in hearing the new album, it sounds interesting. And if anyone can do it justice, I'd say she can. Incidentally, having said I'm not a big fan, I would like to get some more of RLJ's albums. What do people recommend? I don't know about screen-savers, but my wall-paper at work is Joni's water-colour for CSN's album "So Far" and I get a huge number of comments on it (all positive). It looks really cool! You can download it from Jochems' CSN site at: http://www.geocities.com/Nashville/4480 I've typed that from memory, so I hope it's right - I don't have time to check right now! What do people recommend? well, the obvious gap is 'pirates'. it's her second, between the two you own (one more oddity in there as well) and it is truly beautiful. i think 'flying cowboys' is a terrific album. and if these two make you really fall in love with her again, (and i bet they will) your reward will be naked songs, which is kind of a greatest hits done solo and live. i'm awfully fond of this album. patrick np - silence; i can't believe i'm still posting. i went to a wonderful concert of chamber music by aaron copland this evening, and just can't go to sleep. ------------------------------ End of JMDL Digest V4 #439 ************************** The Song and Album Voting Booths are open!
