'faithful' has 6 of the sweetest songs he ever wrote on one side, then six perfect but boring covers of other songs. there's a lot of good stuff on the utopia albums, as well. one weird album, ('utopia' and not the only one with that title) originally released in about 84 or so as a 3-sided double album and recently re-released as 'utopia' on unidisk records in 1997, is another collection of seemingly unambitious little pop gems, much like 'hermit'. it's the one with the black and white color scheme and i'd highly recommend it to bob. 'there goes my inspiration' is originally from this album. patrick, just about to settle down to another new episode of will and grace. i rarely succumb to sitcoms, but i love this one. np - anywhere but here soundtrack ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 28 Sep 1999 18:24:25 -0700 (PDT) From: zapuppy2@webtv.net (Penny) Subject: Re: Tape Trees >>If not and there is another "Acoustic DED" out there, I wanna know about it - - NOW! :~) Bob Hey Bob, Joni did DED accoustic (piano) at either the Farm-Aid or Amnesty International benefit. I fear the JMDL police, as I fear the Sheriff of the county that I live in (Lee County, FL). If any of you watched the Today Show on NBC this morning, you would have seen our illustrious Sheriff (John McDougall) talking to Matt Lauer. Our sheriff who is an ordained minister, posted a 3 page statement on the *official* sheriff departments website attacking Planned Parenthood, gay and feminist foups, atheists, and the American Civil Liberties Union. The Sheriff has every right to his beliefs, but does not have the right to use my tax paying dollars for his "Wake Up America" manifesto. How can a man who preaches about love be so hateful? There are plenty of people in our community who are the very people who he has condemned. When it comes to justice, will I be protected and dealt with differently than his right-wing followers? The worse part is that he can't be removed from office because he's a constitutional officer. I could go on and on about how angry I am. For any of you who would like to read the Sheriff's statement, the site is www.sheriffleefl.org I know that Joni wasn't referring to a sheriff when she wrote "Tax Free", but I felt the song was so appropriate for this situation. Lord, there's danger in this land > You get witch-hunts and wars > When church and state hold hands > Fuck it!" > > Jimmy > np: Tax Free (over and over) I can only say, Joni got it right. Church and state must be separate for exactly the reasons stated, long proven in history: when the religious people hold sway, the dangers for everyone begin. Jimmy, I hope my response doesn't start a flame war here amongst those who will say, 'but Vince, you're a minister, how can you say that' but I am sitting here looking at a whole stack of history books and it has always been so. Jesus did point out that his kingdom was not of this world, and I trust Jesus had it very right. Be assured that this sheriff and those who denounce gays, feminists, the ACLU, and every one else that they cannot control, do not speak for Christianity. There is a certain viewpoint in the Church's history that everyone else is the "other" and the other is sinful and evil. The Scriptures speak to something different, I believe, which is a love and a welcoming of the other person, of seeing all people as our family as children of God, as the various reflections of the image of God. You said that this sheriff is an ordained minister. As one myself, it always makes me feel bad when one of my peers has to go off with messages of hostility, division, and cruelty. Please know that many of my peers do not feel that way, but we never seem to get the same press coverage, I guess in part because we don't seek out to divide people. I have some good friends in Florida who I will share your message with. I don't know Florida geography at all, so I don't know if Lee County is a place where any of them have a congregation or ministry. However, Jimmy, know that in your state there are those who witness to the love of God for all people; just know that. I am sure that Matt Laurer and the Today show will never feature these folks as there is nothing ratings grabbing in the ministry of love, healing, and reconciliation. Hostility always makes for much better tv. If I were to know Christians only through the actions and words of folks like this sheriff in Florida, I wouldn't be a Christian at all. By the grace of God, I know Christ through Christ, which is a far different thing. But one reason I get along so well with atheists is when I look at what nonbelievers look at of the Church, I am horrified too. I am always so embarrassed by the actions of people like this Fort Lee sheriff as it reflects on my faith. I apologise to all in the JMDL who don't need or want to read a religious discussion in here. There was something eerie about something you can't see and that maybe is the crucial factor that differentiates this movie from slasher films. They say that in the golden age of film noir (1941-1958) films that capitalized on people's disillusionment brought about by World War II and paranoia for the A-Bomb, flourished because it captured the essence of a nation in transition. In the 1960s, films are scary because of things the mind conjured while watching harmless objects. Then experts say that in the late 1970s to 1980s, it is de rigeur to show all the `scarifying effects'. Now that people are inundated by those images, it is a welcome treat to see `Blair Witch' which harks to the era of film noir (according to one critic: the idea of being abandoned, alone and manipulated qualifies `Blair Witch' as a neo-noir). I have friends who watched `Blair Witch' and felt motion sickness because of the shaky camera movement. Some of my friends reared in films like `Runaway Bride' found `Blair Witch' too experimental. In my honest opinion, I haven't seen a film like this in many years and I believe it may set a trend right after (incidentally even if I am not a Keanu Reeves fan, I watched `The Matrix' because, like `Blair Witch' and even `There's Something About Mary', these films will influence a generation of movies). I am kinda glad, no, overjoyed that `Blair Witch' received a lot of media mileage. I think it is deserving of that much media attention. Just my opinion.
