[Mark Domyancich Subject: movie recommendation NJC Hi, y'all! Not wanting to usurp Julie's territory, I'll make this brief. This is not for opera lovers only, it's for anyone who enjoys an intense and kleenex-drenched movie experience. Martin Scorcese Presents (whatever that means) Madame Butterfly, directed by Frederic Mitterand. The entire cast is wonderful, but particularly the young girl who plays the title character. If you rent this film, you will not be able to help yourself: you will fall utterly in love with her. And you won't mind the tenor so much, either. Isn't it going to be fun in New Orleans???? I like Otis and Marlena, although I should caution you, I pop a string every time I go for this tuning. Have fun. Besides, there are so many surprises awaiting you in moving through her chord changes that will just thrill you.       thank you for the wonderful support . i'd so much love to dive deeper into joni's tuneings. a singer ( i like to call myself ) i have been able to ( shall i say ) interrupt a few joni songs and those who have heard them have directly wanted to go to the store and buy a cd or two. call me just a strummer , yet when i sing a joni song ( i've said this before but " i don't know where i stand " is my mothers fave. ) the message gets through . ( thank you joni ) in fact i had the fun of playing at a ( crazy ) party recently. outdoors . on a mountain. next to a lake . a bonfire ! and a stage . i played a few csn&y tunes then the joni tune above and the crowd of more than 75 ( were they just drunk ? ) loved it . i played a few of my on simple creations and the band ( that had played earlier ) joined in with me on " woodstock " to finish ( i got chills when i heard the people singing along with me on the chours , fire in their hair) .                          ( i have since thought about this and in light of the most resent woodstock gathering , i fell more appropriate might have been ( at least on a sybloilic level ) to do as another list member spoke of and played " my generation " by the who , bashed up my guitar and thrown it into the bonfire )        still i promise to grow . i promise to have fun . i promise to love music . can i help it? i don't see how.             ok , please don't think me rude ( i know i'm still kinda new ) , but the death thread seems sort of petty by now. for me , i get only the digest , i fell the will of mind not to read what i don't want to ( and i don't think what we talk about ever could really mean ill will to the person we admire so ),it that way among you wonderful people or in my daily life offline . i love it all . differences of thoughts and opinions start my mind , make me think and wonder and dream.           i agree,  gods and monsters was a great movie . the acting WAS top rate and the story ( i thought ) was nice on on more than one angle. i really need to rent it ( saw it in the theatre ) . video store here i come.            i missed the whole blair witch thread and i wish i would have been here i've got alot to say about it. . should i say it . i know know. well, here goes... i liked it. i didn't get ill. i was entertained. i thought the acting was pretty good . and the story ( overall ) as well. as an indie movie maker , i feel only happy ( and a bit of jealousy of ) for their success. and wally i've got it on video ( a friend loaned it to me 3 weeks before it came out in the theatre's , so i saw it before much of the hype. ) if you want me to send you a copy just let me know. it's a slight bit different than the most recent theatrical release . what i have is what they showed at sundance , it's rumored. but who cares ( he smiles ) it's only a movie .         and finally i end ( i know we are all glad ) by letting you know that my email address (mr_lovesaint.net) is a nickname that my bandmates gave me ( i don't know why i felt i had to tell you guys that. ) . they say it's cause i like to croon like a jazz singer , i think its because they are all real ugly and in the only somewhat cute one .           sorry for the ramble. im coming down from a 13 hour shift at work . There are lots of "plain" barre chords and you can fudge much of the rest of the parts that sound a bit intricate by just sticking with with those barres and holding on to them longer. Both of these can be strummed, too. Another starter would be The Circle Game. Just a little about myself: my parents, older brother and I immigrated to the U.S. from Portugal by way of France in 1967. The reasons my family left Portugal for other places was largely because of the oppressive economic and political climate in those days; a dictatorship which only came to an end in 1973. My father was a labor party sorta guy with strong "left wing" tendencies (meaning the stuff we take for granted like the right to free speech and assembly, etc.) What censorship meant in Portugal in that time, among other things, was that if the secret police paid a visit to your home, you were obliged to give them a tour. If that tour revealed subversive literature (or anything the government didn't want you to read), you were taken in for questioning. I was young then but I know all the stories, including the one about my father's cousin who was a political prisoner for five years for running off "communist" literature in his printing business. And the time my mother found out the cops were doing tours and took many of my father's books and burned them in fear of imprisonment. You get the picture. It's a typical scenario of petty and not so petty dictatorships. In fact, Amnesty International was begun as a result of an incident that took place in a small Portuguese town: two university students were overheard making a toast to freedom in a tavern and were arrested and imprisoned for it. I write this as a way of illustrating how I feel about censorship. I abhor it. I think it was that Voltaire dude who said: "I may disagree with what you have to say, but I will defend to the death your right to say it." The DVD is absolutely sensational. Fantastic quality, tons of extra features and little goodies all over the wonderfully true-to-the-original-period animated menus. It's exactly how such a title might have been put together at the time, had the format existed. I have a stand-alone DVD player, which means I can't make full use of the "soundtrack-only" audio option (i.e. play it on my CD players), so I decided to get the standard CD as well, mainly for Hey Bulldog, which completely knocked my socks off in the film. DVDs are more expensive than in the US, it's true, and the range of titles is still pretty limited, but the success of recent DVD-only releases (sell-through VHS will follow next year) such as Enemy Of The State and Blade indicates the format is really catching on here. You can get a decent player for about £300-400, and the DVDs themselves are no more expensive than full-price videos, thanks to widespread special offers in most major stores (prices averaging around £13-15 at the moment). The feature-film video market is dying on its feet in the UK, and in another year or so, it's possible DVD will have replaced it as the most popular home-cinema format. Back to the original topic, I'd say Yellow Submarine is the defining DVD title to have appeared in the UK so far. It's a fantastic advert for its quality and depth of extra content. "look, there's a cyclops...." "no, it's not a cyclops...it's got two eyes..." "oh, a bicyclops, then..." I imagine the artifice in his music over the years might have made him anathema to some Joni fans, although I'm sure there must be fans too. Anyway, Bowie is the only artist by whom I have even more stuff than Joni: about 97% of his recorded output comprising over 30 albums, many singles, a couple of videos, a few bootlegs, several books, various T-shirts, etc etc. I've even got the Tin Machine live album, God help me! I've just heard his new single, Thursday's Child, and it sounds pretty awful, with especially ghastly synth strings, so foreign to the vital real strings and harpsichord on 1984, from the fab Diamond Dogs album, which is currently playing loud on my stereo. Still, I'll be there a week tomorrow to buy the new album, hoping he's released the duff track as the first single, which he has done before. Thinking Joni, Mr B also went through a fallow period in the 80s (I know some disagree that that applies to Joni!), only to re-emerge with new inspiration later, with Black Tie/White Noise and The Buddha of Suburbia. It's fabulous to look at, and everybody looks to be enjoying themselves 2. The sound is generally very good. 3. Joni sounds as though she's hitting all the notes, although I felt she was either undersinging or mixed too far down, which is odd considering she is responsible for the mix. The timbre and colour in her voice are fine, but it sounds, for much of the first half, as if she hasn't got the power she used to have. 4. Everything changes when she takes off the guitar! Her singing sounds twice as confident and powerful, leading me to wonder whether the effort and concentration required of her extremely deft and complex playing is not detracting from her singing. Does anyone else see/hear it like that? 5. The bit where she takes off her shoes and dances barefoot with her backing singer is delightful and sexy.
